I work at AUT next to the paramedics building, and its pretty cool to watch them to practice runs.

It's a hard course though, at the beginning of the year there will be about 50/60 students, and maybe only 15/20 finish the course and graduate.

NOt really on the topic, but i felt like a little ramble..

The Wellington Free Ambulance service runs a course to train as a paramedic. Its a 3 year full time degree course. Ok so I just talked to my friend and this is what she had to say......

You can.....
A - Got to A.U.T (auckland University of Technology) and do the course there - which you have to pay for, or
B - Do volunteer work through St Johns and work through your training with them, this way will take longer but you do get on the job experience with it too - which she believes is better - said that she knew someone who trained at AUT and then got thrown in the deepend with a murder/suicide on their first call out (poor thing). And its free - all you need is the time to do it.

She also mentioned that in the north Island there seems to be more paid shifts available alot faster than down here once you have passed certain levels.

If your friend is really serious about it, my friend suggests that she ring her local St Johns and talk to them about it. My friend started to do this before she got pregnant, I don't think that there was any cost involved but she did a lot of volunteer work for them, and then a few paid shifts. She absolutly loved doing it. Does anyone know much about this? I have a friend who would like to do the training but she said there's not a lot of info readily available and she hasn't been able to find out how much it costs?
