lol mine too, luckily i had started sleeping on a towel just in case...

only about 10% of women have their waters break as a first sign of labour... so it's more than likely that you will get some warning signs beforehand so you can put newspaper or towels all through the house if you need to lolololol (am being smart by the way)

there is a smell to them, kinda a sickly sweetish smell... ok ladies, think back to when you had your bubbas... dunno if you will remember, but probably just as baby was born when all the rest of the fluid gushed out, there was a smell, like a ... i dunno, baby smell i spose...THAT is the amniotic fluid smell.. our lecturer told us after a few years as a midwife they know that smell off by heart... can go into a room and tell if a ladies waters have broken without asking.... lolol. My waters broke in bed, but they didn't have any smell! But left in a car it might after a while! I never really thought about it happening in the car, but I didn't really expect mine to break I had to have them broken the first time, silly but I didn't think about it.

you know when stuff gets spilt in your car and you don't clean it properly, and the smell stays there for ages cause it doesn't get aired out properly. And if it's sunny..ick. My midwife told me it was supposed to smell sweetish too. I had a couple of scares where we thought the fluid was leaking.

I actually have no idea what it smells like tho coz I had my legs up in the air flat on my back when I had my waters broken for me. I had the odd one too and Maya was fine. Until I realised that there is a slight chance of listeria and being a complete OCD wouldn't eat them anymore.

BTW, on average there are only 2 reported cases of listeriosis each year. Ok I have another silly question! I've got lots of time to think of these at the moment Read somewhere last night that I should take the electric blanket off our bed soon in case my waters break and I get electrocuted!! Have also read that you should start sitting on towels in the car cos its really hard to get it out. I have kept the clamp but not the cord, it was too smelly When does the tummy button go to "normal" Joeys is still sore looking and has a little crust on it. Is that normal? I might get the m/w to look at it tomorrow. He he, I remember being so paranoid about Summers belly button, it looks so sore for them and it would get knocked occassionally and bleed a little bit, but she wasnt actually too phased by it, and it fell off pretty quickly too.

Thanks Anna....I can feel the bub move....and phoned the midwife and she said that if I ran into the pole or I fell on my tummy then that would be a different story but the baby should be fine...I asked my mum and all the ladies at work and they all say that it should be fine....but I am paranoid!!!

Hiya Roksana... I wouldn't worry too much, the amniotic fluid around the bub protects him/her from most knocks like this!! Call you rmidwife for a check if you fancy but please don't worry! I am sure bub will be fine!!

When I was about eight months pregnant with Quinn i tripped down ONE step, landed on the floor in a awkward spot between the step and the freezer and an ironing board landed on my head!! Yah I know....I am a paranoid first mother......

Guess what happened? I was walking out of a shop at lunch time and saw a kid running towards me....I had to turn to my right, as the kid was going run right into me...but when I did that I hit a damn Pole....It hit the lower right side of my tummy....It did not hurt at all but I was shocked! and now I am worried...I dont know if it could hurt the baby?????


What do you guys think? ....Oh God I would just die if it did!

am late replying to post but gotta share my story too. i wore my cool jammies bright red with big white hearts lol and my end of work date kept changing lol. the boys were due 15th dec so i was gona work until the 1 dec (at the time i thought there was only one bub) but as i got bigger i would tell my boss that i would finish abit earlier and so on until i rang him at 8am on the 14th oct to tell him i wouldnt be coming into work today as i had just given birth to 2 teeny tiny boys (they were 9 weeks early) i also used to work part-time (along with my fulltime job - im mad i tell ya)in a army camp bar but finished that at about 41/2-5mths as i was getting too buggered

She doesnt wear so much 'retro' stuff as mum only kept a little bit of my stuff, but she definately wears more than her fair share of hand me downs (a lot of which are my nephews so she looks like a little boy at home lots he he). Guess I like her to look like a little girl when I go out so put her in her good clothes

Ha, sorry Im a bit late to be answering this post, one day ill be on top of things.

I worked up till 4 days before my due date (not fun, roped in to it by my boss and it sucked cos I commuted from Waiuku to Glenfield on the north shore,one side of Auck to the other, so basically took forever in peak hour traffic) but I actually ended up getting a bit of a break (if ya can call it that, he he) as Summer was 12 days overdue the little monkey.

You are right Janine....Atish and I will be fine...as he does earn well enough (tho our mortgage is a high one).

I also want the best for my little girl! I always had every thing when I grew up and I want the same for my baby (if not a little more). I am not too worried about cloths and toys because she will have two nana's that are going to go mad.....my Mum has already bought so much for her and I still have 11 weeks to go...

We also have very close friends and I am the first one out of them to have a baby...they are very excited and already asking me what they should be buying....I am not saying NO to nothing....LOL

LOL Maria, I bought all Maya's summr clothes last summer and put them away and I pulled them out last week as we are going to the Gold Coast on Monday and she'll need some of them. She was so excited, she insisted on wearing a pair of hot pink hot pants and singlet - and it's freezing!

I buy most of Maya's clothes a year ahead. I buy a lot of stuff from the Pumpkin Patch and JK factory shops now, as they are better quality, and now that Maya is older she isn't growing wuite as fast. I got her some dresses for $12 from the Patch Factory shop that she will get this winter out of, then next winter as daycare clothes.

I'm kind of lucky I guess, when Maya was tiny I lived week to week, hand to mouth while I finished uni, and set up a house etc. (when I moved in I owned a microwave and a bed, no plates, cutlery, washing machine, fridge.....). So I learnt to live on very little, and now that I am working and can afford to spend a bit extra, I can save more. Even tho I can afford it, I can't justify spending huge amounts of $$$ on clothes for Maya, when the cheaper ones do the same job.

We have huges xmases too tho. I have labyed all her pressies for this year in the huge Kmart sale a few weeks ago. She's getting some more Little People, a proper 'big girls' bike with trainer wheels, a dolls cot, highchair and stuff, a Barbie laptop computer and some other bits and pieces. yep i can justify buying for paris because i know it will get used again for ayja. already i have gone through ayja's clothes that she has grown out of and have about 6 supermarket bags full. pretty much all of them are still as new cos even if they were used for paris as well, they both grew so fast that the clothes were hardly used... so onto trade-me they will go as soon as i have time to list them. we getclothes given to us from a couple of people at mikes work.. one of them does the pumpkin patch thing.. the clothes we get have been her girl's daycare clothes.... pumpkin patch... all in great condition.. so they are paris's good clothes for the most part. but i do go and buy at tnt as well, did a big buy up too Maria, paris has 2 pairs of jeans, 2 pairs of jammies and a winter coat for next year. got her a pair of polar fleece slippers for $1, felt so cheap, but she thinks they are the greatest and has hardly taken them off all day. just shows it's the little things.

yep it will be hard, but hey, if me and mike can live on $25,000 a year, with 2 kids to clothe feed and nappy, pay the extra for daycare, as well as all the bills and pay off his debts from before he met me... then i think you will be able to to. yep the mortgage thing is pretty tricky, but budgeting is the key. every likes to think they can give their kids the best of the best, but many of us can't.... everything in life is just so expensive these days.. and sacrifices are the only way. pay the bills, and use the rest wisely. we buy nappys from wherever has them on special, we spend $240 a fortnight all up on food... and that includes the $60 spent on nappies, up until a few months ago we spent $30 a fortnight on formula for paris as well.

you learn to buy at sales, buy a year ahead, put things on layby not buy them outright, and use the cheaper brands or buy in bulk.

We get disability for Caleb, $74 per frotnight and they pay it fortnightly to plus we get $35 per week for disability related costs... I used to get $125 for food when I was on a benefit since Caleb needed speciality foods. When I was a solo mum on the benefit I was getting $467 per week and disabilty on top if that so I was doing ok... But most of my friends didnt get that kinda money, but my case manager was awesome and got me every little thing I was entitled to.. My ar got pink stickered years ago for bald tyres.. WINZ paid $1200 for new tyres and I didnt have to pay it back because a car was a necessity with Calebs disability (being on oxygen) so it all boils down to how good your case manager is. Yep, you only get what they consider to be 'reasonable' at the time. I got $150 when I moved house, but other times they'll only give between $50-$100 to last till payday.

i was told u cn get up to $600 per yr for food grants???also u[ to $600 towards bond if u move n cant come up with the money urself.

my mum got help frm winz for 3 pr glasses back in 93 thanx to us kids needing them *sigh* poor mum.i have gotten help for dental and glasses too.

Well I had a look at the winz site and I doubt that I will be eligable for any payments. Because our combined weekly income is way higher than the limit.

Well I am pretty much an expert on all things WINZ, comes from years of experience with useless case managers and having to find everything out for myself

If you are on a low income you are entitled to an accomodation supplement to top up your rent or mortgage. It's worked out based on income and where you live. The rate is highest if you live in Auckland, slightly lower for Wellington and other main centres and lower again for rural areas.I get $120 a week and my rent is $320.

Food grants are available to those on a benefit and/or low income who are recieving assistance from WINZ like the Accomodation supplement. You are entitled to up to $350 per year on average, but to get one you have to prove that you have no immediate means of buying food eg. bank statement with nil balance. You also have to give specific reasons for why you can't afford food that particular week.

If you or your child has ongoing medical costs you can get a disability allowance which is worked out based on the costs of medication, doctors visits etc. We get around $40 per week for Maya because of the cost of her docs visits, allergy meds, specialists visits and special food.

If you have a child with a 'disability' (also includes things like allergies, asthma etc. anything which requires the child to have a greater degree of supervision or assistance than normal) then you can also get a Child Disability Allowance of around $40 a week. This is not income tested, so anyone with a sick/disabled child qualifies for it even if they are earning megabucks. This allowance is to cover things like transport to appointments etc, special food requirements, keeping the telephone connected in case of emergencies etc.

You can also get one off grants for emergency dental/medical treatment, kids school uniforms and stationery, fridge/washing machine repairs etc. but these usually have to be paid back over a period of time.

And if you are not on a benefit IRD administers the Family Assistance (on the benefit WINZ pays it as part of your benefit) and it is income related. You can also get Family Tax Credit and Child Tax Credit if you are working up till you have baby, and your partner is working.

I might look into it the whole WINZ and IRD payout thing...I wish I knew about it sooner tho..because I am the only Accountant in my company, my bosses are freaking out about me being gone for more than 3 months. On top of that they asked if I could do some work from home on my 3 months off.....I said Ok...as long as you pay me and I will only do what I can.

I wish I could be a stay at home mum for a while...but just cant! We just bought a house and it will be hard on one salary...

And I am not the type to sit at home for a long period of time. But I would have love to stary at home with the baby for at least 6 months....oh well what can you do?

I was working in Te Awamutu at a daycare when I was preg with Caleb, had a couple of weeks of to organise moving back to Palmy, was sick to death of Calebs dad, was very stressful with him, and had just moved my stuff back and organised to start workibg here when I went in2 labour at 26wks i havnt worked again since then, Caleb was very sick for the first 2 yrs so I stayed at home with him, then decided to study so started him in daycare twice a week and over 3mnths gradually increased his hours to full time when my studying started, Finished those papers had a bit of time off, Caleb is still in full time daycare now, which is fantastic, as hes in a routine to start school next year but since imon strict bed rest Caleb is staying withmy parents, and only stays with us on my partners days off.. I don't know how I would cope if I didn't have Hannah in day care!!! As it is I'd like to have her in a bit more, changing her routine every day is starting to drive me nuts. would be easier if she was somewhere constant, whether than is daycare or home.

I almost considered dropping out of a paper the other day. I'm not coping with the workload very well this semester after missing the first two weeks. But I'm already halfway so I guess I'll just have to cope.

Thanks everyone. Have had a pretty rough week at work and am thinking about finshing up a bit earlier, sont think I can handle another 4 weeks. Janine and Nikki - you guys both amaze me being able to finish uni while raising babies!! I have done one semester since having Quinn and I found it to be madness!! I think my big prob was not putting him into daycare so trying to work around that but still!!

I finished uni two weeks before having Quinn... I spent most of my time sleeping!

And Aimee!! The question as to what to wear while in labour is not silly!! It was one of my main worries!! Being a prude I was really concerned about being starkers in front of people... lots of people told me that while in labour you don't care but I DID!! I had a water birth... I got into the pool wearing a nightie! Don't stress too much Janine - Maya was the same and the teachers would get her up when she was lying quietly kicking herself to sleep. After a few days of rotten baby Maya they soon got the message and left her alone!

I took 3 papers thru the Open Polytech to make up credits in the semester Maya was born, because I had such a long labour I actually spent several hours working on a psychology assessment in between contractions! After I had her I worked on stuff while she slept, and I only had to get one extension that semester which was because I had 9 days in hospital with mastitis when she was 3 weeks old. i finished off 2 papers starting when Paris was 3 weeks old, but it was only a couple of hours a week and mum looked after her, i then took 6 months off, Paris was 11 mths when i went back to study, part time.

now, this time, my little Ayja starts daycare on Monday. I took her for a visit today, and they just didn't get it at all. she's a pretty hand-off baby, likes to play under playgym not be held and such. she is quiet and goes to sleep by herself for the most part. i put her to bed there, and went to get somet hing to eat in the parent room thing, and came back after eating to one of them getting her up - "oh she was just lying there quietly smiling" she said. I could have screamed at her! "that's what she does, you silly lady,. she lies there quietly till she goes to sleep. why on earth would you get her up. all that will do is overstimulate her and upset her and you'll have a crying screaming mess on your hands that won't go back to sleep!!!!!" argh argh argh! I have another visit there on friday - may go for longer and stay in the sleep room with her and make sure everyone actually knows that she DOES NOT get up, if she is happy then leave her. come i know all too well what happens when you keep her up cos you think shes not tired.. and they certainly don't have the right "equipment" to calm her back down again.

I finished work a week and a half before Hannah's due date (although that meant it was just over 3 weeks before I had her) though I was only working part-time as a librarian and doing some stuff for Mum at her office. Was hard work shelving books and having to stand on my feet in the last couple of weeks so I dragged a chair around with me to sit down whenever I could! I probably could have worked longer but I had school work to get onto! Was studying up until 2 days before I had her... frantically trying to write my journal (100% assessment - completing it at 9 days overdue hahaha) and an essay. My back was killing me having to sit at the computer for hours to do it. I almost went insane.

I wore one of the spunky hopital gowns, emblazoned with "Hospital Property". I finished work at 30 weeks, was supposed to work till 36 weeks but I got Symphisis Pubis Dysfunction which meant I couldn't sit for long periods and work couldn't accomodate my needs. I didn't mind tho, I finished Xmas Eve so Xmas and New Years went pretty fast. I pretty much just rested at home and watched bad TV, the afternoon cartoons, (I was sick all thru my pregnancy) and nested washing baby clothes, painting furniture etc.
At 36 weeks I went up to Whangarei and spent a week with my grandparents. That was great, really relaxing, the last time out I really had before Maya was born, and it was nice to spend some of the last days of my pregnancy with my grandmother talking about when she had her babies, and her thoughts on becoming a grandmother (I was her first grandchild) and a great-grandmother (Maya is her first great-grandchild). It's one of the most special times of my life.

Oh and I wore a gown when I had her. I laboured at home for 2 days and had lots of baths, just changed into clean pjs after every bath, and eventually wore my PJ's to the hospital, but I had to take the pants off (for obvious reasons ) so I just wore a gown over my t-shirt. ]]> Wed, 10 Aug 2005 19:48:55 +0000 https://www.ohbaby.co.nz/forum/forum_posts.asp?TID=848&PID=13237&title=2-questions#13237
