Becks I was fed solids at 2months aswell, it was the norm back when we were babies.

Some people are jsut silly, I thought it was more common knowledge you dont feed babies solids till they are 4+ months and def no dairy till over 1.

A woman I know used to work for CYFS and she had an interview with a girl who had alreday had one of her babies taken off her. They had called her in because she had just given birth to another baby and they were checking to see if this one needed to be taken off her too. She went to get her from the waiting area and the girl was sitting there trying to feed her newborn McDonalds fries

But I did receive my baby (plunket book type thing) from my mum and at 2 months I was on solids, i'm wondering if she had some not so friendly advice from an older woman saying a baby should get the taste of solids early .

I do hope the baby is ok.

I was thinking more along the lines of some sort of screening process for potential parents... a test of sorts. That is really sad for the baby Situations like this really freak me out as Im applying to be a plunket nurse this month and coming across these sorts of situations or other neglect type ones worry me as I'll prob be a complete mess wanting to "save them all". having lived in south auckland most of my life I am afraid to say that this doesnt suprise me....nor does coke in baby bottles etc....

i think there is plenty of info out there for most things in life but of course it is up to individuals to access it - and there are pockets of society who choose not to...

That is just plain scary! I am shocked to hear that there is a mother out there that doesn't know that a 6 week old baby doesn't eat solids full stop. I think she is very lucky the baby is still alive and hasn't choked to death on the food it has been given. I think people tend to get defensive when they're called on their parenting practises, regardless of whether they are actually wrong or right. I remember my Plunket nurse telling me about a lady she went to visit and was horrified to see her rinse out a dirty bottle under the tap then make it up with tap water for her newborn, yet the woman didn't understand what the issue was.

That said, it's pretty sad that no one bothered to educate this poor woman on what NOT to do with her bub, I have a friend who fostered a wee girl at 6 months who has pretty severe allergies from being given solids too young and the wrong types of foods. This fully disturbed me as my baby is the same age and I would never do this.

My stepmum is a nurse and told me a lady came in to the doctors with her six week old baby because he was unwell.

She had been feeding him weetbix and normal cows milk.

My stepmum said to her that she shouldn't give her baby either of those things and that babies tummies can't handle solids at six weeks and to definitely not give him dairy products.

The women then said 'That's ok, I will just give him yoghurt'.

My stepmum said 'Yoghurt is a dairy product!'

The women then rattled off a whole lot of other things that she had been giving not knowing that they not good for baby, ie: Custard baby food, other tinned baby foods, weetbix, cows milk, yoghurt, cheese.

Then after being told that none of these things should be given to a six week old baby, she said 'What would you know?!' to my Stepmum who has been a nurse for 20 years and has two children!
