well it turns out that my wee boy is just a huge gutts!!!!! so my MW has put me on some kind of drug to bring in more milk as well as alfalfa tablets and blessed thisle tablets to try and bring in more milk for the little piggy iv been feeding him for at least an hour at a time which she said is way to much so i have a set routine layed out and i have to give him top ups and express until i have enough milk to feed him soley on breastmilk so now he seems way more settled and is waking every 3 hours at night time so at 12, 3 and 6 which i can handle as long as he doesnt scream!!

my DH wasnt such a big help first time round with Bay cos he just didnt know what to do plus he was so young! thanks for all the advice and support
last night was much better - we got 7 hours sleep with 2 lots of screaming matches and yup i realised that it was just because he wanted to feed constantly and not anything wrong ....i feel alot clearer today!! DH has been absolutely awsome!!!! hes been running around after me, looking after Bay, looking after the house, cooking, cleaning yadayada! and all with 1 hand!!! aaawwww hes such a honey!!!. I also had 3 hours of sleep this morning too!!
My MW came today and Astin has only lost 140grams which she said is not much at all really!! and she clarified alot for me which made me feel heaps better! - like i thought Astin had blood in his wees (which is normal for girls but not boys) so i kept a dirty nappy from yesterday to show her and shes pretty sure that it was just..(hhhmmm cant remember the word!)..crystalites???? or something like that!! that makes the urine go orangey! and that happens when they are still waiting for the good milk to come in which is also when they are the most unsettled but as of this morning his wees are a normal colour...YUP!! HE PEED!! ok firstly - yes gabriella reacted really badly to choccy - had heaps over easter and took her over three days to get rid of really bad colic!!! havent reallyhad choccy since...and you reminding me of how hard it was means im now not rushing back to any just yet either..

secondly - as a recent new mum i have to say i felt just like you and would break down in tears as i felt she was "on me" all day and nite....I found it hard to take a break - mum made me!!! so hope yours does too. DH was next to useless! Give yourself break and go back to bed while your mum or DH has him or when bubs is asleep. I found by doing that and just lying there or watching tv or reading a mag (whats a book?) helped hugely.

I found the "cloud" cleared around 6 weeks so figure you have probably another 4 weeks or so of this...after that i just found i had a rythym and ella had settled and the world was a much better place...those blues took over before that too..

Heres hoping you have great support and can cry whenever you like, and can keep on feeding through this...BIG HUGS from someone who was just there!!!

gandt said exactly what I was going to say - your not doing anything wrong. He is encouraging your milk flow and may feed more to build up milk supply ready for it to come in more. Also newborns don't know what time of day things are so make sure you make day and night feeds different. Nite being the quick, quiet time.

Congratulations on the birth of Astin

Jack did the exact same thing when Caprece came home but he did settle down after a week or so and now he loves her and keeps kissing her. I know its hard on no sleep but what really made a difference was being over the top nice to Jack and instead of telling him off for the bad things we just praised him for every little thing he did that wasn't bad.

I have also found that Caprece sleeps really well after cluster feeding. You could also get you midwife to show you how to latch Astin while your lying down so you can doze while he feeds.

DH is trying to do as much as he can for me but when it comes to Astin theres not much he can do cos he only has 1 hand now after his accident so he cant pick astin up or burp him etc but he tries to take him as much as he can like when i eat he holds him on the couch and he also takes full care of Bay now too which is a load off my mind!
He also stays up at night with me so i dont feel like crap alone at night he can handle the no sleep thing way better than me!

my mum will be back from rarotonga on wednesday so she will help too (i hope!) but i guess for now im it

Don't worry.. Daniel did the same thing on day 3-5.. one of the hospital MW's warned me to expect him to wanna go to the breast and basically camp there.

To help with the tiredness though is there any chance your DH (or someone else) could look after Astin for a couple of hours so you could get a couple of hours of sleep? Don't forget you probably will have baby blues around now too. See if you can get Bay to "help mummy look after our baby" and spend some time with him when Astin (hopefully) sleeps in the morning. They usually do sleep really well for the first few nights, so he is probably just recovered from being born and is hungry now. Sometimes they scream cos they are having too much to drink as well. I was told to feed every 3 hours during the day - so around an hour for a feed, quick awake time, then a couple of hours sleep, then feed time again. i hope so cos DH and i are running on nothing he certainly is a pig!! and feeds for half an hour each side 4 times!! (so he feeds half hour right boob then half hour left then swaps back to half hour right and so on...) and i know hes getting heaps of milk cos he struggles to swollow in time and the milk starts comming out the side of his mouth!! then when he pulls off it squirts!!! and when he waits longer than 3 hours to feed my boobs turn into rocks!! ...im not moaning about the BF thing though cos its such a huge relief to be able to feed after failing to do so with Bay.

I know that Bombhsell's Gabriella has a hard time when Bombshell's has eaten some chocolate so it might just have been that and today - he might just be super hungry. Awwww sorry about the rough night and the screaming!

About the suckling... he's probably a hungry bubba and wanting to get your milk in properly. He will be wanting to feed off you lots and lots over the next couple of weeks. Then you'll leak everywhere and it will settle after a month or so. What he's doing is commonly called "cluster feeding" - he's gobbling up as much as he can in the evening so he has a full tummy to sleep on.

I don't like the screaming though, if that continues talk with your mw. Krystiana was really unsettled her first night because she had swallowed some liquid. Astin is 4 days old now and has been a great sleeper until last night, we had a total of 1.5 hours sleep inbetween the screaming!! he didnt have wind and it seemed as if he just had an upset tummy which i put down to me eating some chocolate yesterday so anyway hes been fine today eating and sleeping like clockwork and then tonight all he wants to do is eat!! So is this an indication of another bad night!!?????
