Awesome cheap alternative to buying packs of bacon... Buy bacon pieces from the deli counter... Something like $15 a kilo and seriously, it's awesome... It's honestly mainly the likes of leftover streaky bacon strips... So, in reality, they're not pieces... Feeling pretty pleased with myself today. Since i went to the supermarket last week I started making a list of all the things I needed and rather than just popping in to buy whatever it was...and another $50 worth of stuff I just added things to my list till it got to the point where my list was full and i needed things like vegetables and fruit and had nothing for the kids to eat so i went along today with my list. Spent $182.61 BUT I got enough food to last two weeks so will just have to get fruit and veges next week maybe. I also had to get cleaning stuff in there cos we are moving this weekend so had to get oven cleaner, etc.... and i also got at least 11 meals worth of meat so I thought that was pretty good going. I went through my crockpot recipe book and added to the list all the little things like fish sauce etc.. that i didnt have in the cupboard but now I can make lots of stuff. That's pretty much the backbone of it all.

A few years ago, we were following a youngish boy around the supermarket who was being a complete sh*te, and his Mum was ignoring it. So, DH wandered up behind him, farted, and wandered away again. The smell was rather    Anyway, the Mum turned around, took one whiff (one's enough - I'm surprised she didn't pass out) and clipped him (the boy, she didn't see DH) around the ears for the stink! DH just about dropped into the foetal position laughing. BS and Mother Outlaw won't let me go shopping something about filling trolleys with things like Golf Clubs and TV's and Fridges.

Meat? I like to stock up when the cuts I like are cheap, then I can go for months without buying any. I often buy cauliflower and broccoli in bulk when it is on special. Come home cut it up and freeze it.

I do it with pumpkin as well. (when I can get hubby to do that part for me)

I buy bacon when it is on special and then a big pack and then just devide it up.

I actually went to go look at our shopping for a month and I am not doing that bad. Some stuff can go but I am spending about $350 a fortnight on stuff but my freezer is really full and like this week I just spent $30 for fruit milk and stuff.

But some months I can go totally over and know I can save a bit more as well. Hrmm, staples..

Potatoes, kumara, broccoli, cauliflower, silverbeet, mushrooms (staple - no matter the cost)
Milk - lactose free and normal
Olivani
Frozen veges
Raisins and sultanas
Flour and yeast (we make our own bread)
Eggs
Cat food
Olive oil

That's surprising little. Then the biscuits are added. We don't get much meat from the supermarket as we have half a beast supplied with DF's position. Do chuck in some pork/chicken usually though cos you get seriously sick of beef.

I make Mac and cheese for Five of us and I use

2/3 of a packet of macaroni elbows (or other pasta if the mood takes me)cooked

CHEESE SAUCE

2 Tablespoons Flour
2 Tablespoons Butter
1 Cup milk
1 Cup cheese
Pinch of salt and pepper

I usually make 1 1/2 of this

Melt butter in a pot, take off heat and add flour. Slowly add milk and return to low heat until it boils add cheese.

Pour over the cooked macaroni and add mixed 1 Cup grated cheese and fresh breadcrumb on the top(I usually great 2 pieces of bread and a crust) Place in the oven until crispy and serve.

Robyn - I had a whole cauli in my freezer once but then ran into difficulty at the other end cause I couldn't chop it. sometimes chicken nuggets

man didnt realise how much crap we have till i see it listed!!! I really struggle for lunch box/lunch ideas

How do you make mac n cheese?

I didnt realise you could freeze brocolli and cauliflower yourself. ive often brought the pre frozen stuff thinking maybe if i did it myself it wouldnt be right.... not sure why i thought that. So do you just cut it into the size you want and stick it in the freezer, do you have to pre boil it or anything?

I only buy those little packs of bacon for about $3 or something and add them to my cooking. Im really bad, I feel stink if I serve my hubby up something boring for tea. Nah I didn't take any offence at all, I actually think I was trying to justify to myself if we really need to buy bacon each week. We could have mac&cheese without bacon not really an essential ingredient and the scrambled eggs and.......

And it would save $6 (for one meal) a week on our budget.

I use bacon for meals as well - to add more meat to something (in which case it should also go further) or for pizzas.

Kazzle, did you know that brocoli and cauli is really easy to freeze? Chop it up and put into a bag, then cook when ready. Actually I agree, bacon is great if you buy it on special and can use it in lots of different meals. I personally think bacon tastes best when you only have it occasioanlly!

OK I concede the chips and ice-cream. I make my own cheese sauce (do I get brownie points for that ) And the Bacon I usually use for a meal, like macaroni,bacon and cheese, homemade pizza, scrambled eggs with bacon pieces or Spag and bacon on toast. These are for our Saturday night dinner (lazy night). Still not sounding that good is it.
