Thought I might clarify some things for you all - having been through numerous kitchen inspections myself (which are nerve racking - even though there is nothing wrong). Also have to say this is pretty much from a Dunedin (inspectors) point of view but By-laws in food handling/premise are very similar.

The difference between an A or B rating can be 1 or 2 points (Dunedin works on a point system when grading), it can come down to
-not having a written cleaning programme - even though premise is clean and well maintained
-not having a written/recordable food safety programme - ie temp charts for fridges etc
- As said above (and by-law in most if not all councils), handlers must all hold a food safety cert, if not all of them then some points will be deducted
-Also all premises by law have to have a written sickness policy
As you can tell alot of it can come down to paper work, and I know of some places that should have an A that haven't got it due to lack of documentation, and some A's that shouldn't really get that A but have been lucky on the day and have very good records.

All food certs should be clearly displayed for diners to see!

In Waitak city it has to be visible from the outside of the premises.
I'd eat in an A or B, but not in a D or E. If you ask your local council they will hav ehe info. And it is usually a by-law that the certificate is visable. If it isn't you can ask to see it, if they refuse you can get them in a lot of trouble. where is the food rating for a particular town/city? is there somewhere online that i could look up and check. would hate to be eating at e places, but not sure i would remember to check or know where to look in the resturant or cafe itself.

Sometimes they have that rating as the staff aren't quailified with food safety. But still in saying that I wouldn't be eating at an E. sometimes eateries get a b because their staff havent been on certain courses. ie food hygene course. I have a habit of checking the food rating.

E is border line shut down! We eat only at A or B, there is no c to enable them to be distinguished (SP?) D & E are lucky they can still operate.

My DH has been eating at an E for about a year and last week they finally put ther sign up and he was feeling quite ill by the end of the day! (they have to show their rating in the shops)

ok so we have a nice cafe down at Botany (by mitre 10 mega) called pickles....

Nice UNTIL i read today that it has an E grade rating....GROSSSSSS and they are so pretentious there yet have that rating....

I read thru all the ratings in paper just in case my fave kebab shop was mentioned...luckily it wasnt and hope it wont be on target either...that will make me weep otherwise!!!

I staying well away from those E rating food places...GROSSSS....hope none are YOUR local takeout???
