I'm amazed that people still do that Helen. From the pictures I've seen of the new babies on here, even brand new ones look so much like the gender they're supposed to be. Surprised me as I always thought it was difficult to tell if they were boy or girl at the beginning - but not so.

I want neutral stuff, as I'm not pregnant yet so definately don't know what we're having. I found out the sex of Chloe so I did buy a lot of pink stuff mostly blankets and things like that, I shopped mostly at farmers and they told me that as long as I kept the receipt I could exchange them within 10mths just in case the ultrasound was wrong(if that can happen ). I didn't find out the sex for Miya so bought mostly neutral colours as well as some blue and put a little bit of money a side each week so when she was a day old we went and bought pink to mix with the other.

Tons of people commented on how handsome my SON was when Chloe was tiny even when she was in pretty pink dresses!! I don't worry about what the label reads when it comes to dressing my kids, as long as it isn't blatently one gender over the other... Josiah and Xavier wear some of Kiya's unisex hand-me-downs, and if Crumb is a girl, she'll wear some of her brothers stuff too. Now I'm finding this frustrating. Ok so i've only been to PP and JK so far, but the amount of stuff for babies that is in neutral colours is sadly limited. And some of the little t-shirts which i thought would be great for both are labelled boy or girl. Can't a baby girl wear red or green?

I didn't buy anything prior to getting pregnant, but did check out prices so I could go out with knowledge once I was pregnant.

Fluery - I'm not finding out the sex either, I want it to be a surprise.  Hubby and his ex wife found out and so did his sister with her 3 kids so his Mum is at me to find out so she can knit in the right colour.  But I'm sticking to my guns..... I think there is heaps of wools and colours that suit both.  And if its a boy/girl you can just add the pink or blue once their born.

Thanks SER, I feel the same with having two incomes. I am reluctant to buy any big items until I am actually pregnany though. I would feel terrible if i'd gone and brought a cot etc and then find I have a m/c or take longer than I expect.

Have thought about it and I'm not sure if I have a daughter I want her to bombarded with pink. I'm not pregnant yet but i buy stuff all the time.

I see it this way, at the moment we are on two good wages and can afford to buy the odd item of clothing, cloth nappy, toy, etc so why not.

If i get pregnant i may have a horror pregnancy with bad morning sickness etc that may prevent me from working and therefore we will be on one wage alot earlier than we expected so not having to worry because we don't have money to buy the things we need will be better for both of us.

I don't see it as bad luck like some people do to have baby stuff in the house before you are pregnant, i'm not into supersticion.

What we found really helped us if you buy nappies/wipes each time you go shopping that really helps and especially when you go down to 1 income once bub arrives.
Also another thing we found really helpful was stocking up on house hold items like dishwashing powder, Shampoos, tins of spagetti etc etc, every liitle thing helps especially when you are down to 1 income.

You'll actually find Fleury that most people don't find out just to buy stuff, it's to bond with the child fully beforehand, although it has been so much easier being able to buy stuff knowing the sex IMO. But I would suggest whether or not you find out the sex, keep most nursery stuff pretty neutral if you're planning on having more than 1 child, cos it seems a waste to me to then buy new stuff just because of the colour choices.

We only bought a couple of unisex outfits in white before we found out what we were having. A lot depends on how you want to dress your baby. Both DD and DS look great in blue. I used to put DD in pink and blue a lot so people thought she was a girl. I don't think boy babies look weird in pink, or girls in blue, but often for strangers, it can be quite hard to be sure if you are looking at a boy baby or a girl baby when they are young. So if its dressed in pink, you can usually presume its a girl, and vice versa. So the only problem I see of dressing them in the 'opposite' colours is you might get people thinking you've got a baby of the opposite sex, if you get what I mean?
I guess green, yellow, red, brown, orange, white etc are all good either/or colours.

What to buy when you don't know the sex?

Obviously we are a long way from TTC or even having a baby, as usualy can't help myself, and when we are preggers I don't want to find out anyways.

So what are safe/unisex colours, - and does it matter?

Does a baby boy really look weird in pink. I love the colour blue and can't see why a girl can't wear it.

Also what if your second child is the opposite, do you reuse everything, or sell them.

Ideas, suggestions?

We are trying for #2 back when Farmers had a big huge nursery sale in February I put a lot of things on layby sleigh cot I got for 50% off, highchair, playgym, all the avent stuff, changing table were all 30% off and a few odds and ends since then.When we had DS 4 years ago we hardly got anything just a few clothes or toys.I also have brought a few maternity clothes during sales mainly jeans and tops so even if money gets tighter we don't have to worry about forking out any money.

The voucher idea is really good.

I started buying things before I was pregnant. Nothing big, I brought some maternity clothes (2 x bellybras, citizen jeans and mobea clothes) and unisex baby clothes (wool singlets, all n ones, socks etc). I really wish that I'd started buying MCNs way back then.

I would totally suggest buying mall vouchers, this is what my friend did when they decided TTC. It ended up taking them a year to fall pregnant but every week she got a $20 mall voucher - quite a good idea really!

I didn't buy anything before I was pregnant with the gremlins which was just as well coz ending up with twins I needed two of everything. I did get a few clothes in a JK sale that were ridiculously cheap but I never ended up using them as I only bought one of each so gave them away as gifts.
I wouldn't bother with big stuff either coz you've got to have somewhere to store it.

I'd recommend saving too but keep an eye on trademe and if you see a bargain grab it (also it's good to get a 'feel' for prices early so it's good to keep looking).

I got my cot off trademe before I was pregnant and while I felt a little sheepish at the time I believe it was well worth it. We got a great deal on an almost mint condition cot. I wouldn't recommend buying clothing though (unless you just fall in love with something) as you will get heaps! Kate, I too wouldn't buy too much as half of the fun is buying when you are actually pg (it seems a lot more real), but yeah change tables and things like that are either way really. Just to add for Fleury, I got my maternity gear in TK Maxx, and also in Mothercare in England, ,my key pieces such as trousers and skirts cost about 30 pounds but lasted all through my pregnancy, I really recommend them, hope the kiwi dollar stays high for you :-)

Hi minik8e

My advice would be don't buy too much at all as you will be amazed how many presents you are given for your baby, I didn't have to buy anything at all for the first year of my little girl's life.

The one thing I would say to splash out on is a good pram, I have the Mountain Buggy Urban Elite and it is the best thing ever, I love it. If you could find one of those on trademe then you wouldn't regret it.
They are so light to push and we have walked sooooo many miles with it and on hiking tracks and all types of places. Have taken it to England and back and it has stood up to being carted everywhere. When I push my friend's prams I notice just how much harder they are to push and take a lot more effort to manouver.

Fleury, when you are in England I would definitely advise you to stock up on clothing there as it is so much cheaper than NZ. The supermarkets over there are massive and stock copies of designer clothing and all sorts of awesome stuff. My little girl had so much stuff from Tesco supermarker which is such great quality and you would see similar in Pumpkin Patch for about ten times the price. Off the top of my head try Asda and Tescos, and also TK Maxx is an incredible store, designer goods which have come to the end of the line so you can pick up some amazing clothing for next to nothing :-)

If there is something particular that you absolutely love and it is a great bargain, I would get it. I did that with our pram and am so glad that I did. It would have cost nearly $1000 new but I saw one in near perfect condition on Trade Me for $200 buy now so snapped it up while we were still TTC. People gave us grief for "jumping the gun" but I didn't care. I agree that I would save the money rather than buying before hand (and this is from someone who did buy before I was pregnant!!!). Why buy something that you might not end up liking when you can save the money and earn interest?

Deb is right...tastes change, styles change, what you think you will need will quite possibly change. The amount of stuff we bought and didn't use is ridiculous.

It can be really tempting and exciting to buy stuff but honestly I personally don't think it's worth it.

I'm there too with the don't let the endo win, and hey there are a few of us that have proved that.

Nut sales do come and go I would save the money instead and then buy at them when you are pg. But... if something is selling and it isn't coming back again and its something you really like get it (often happens with prams), there is always trademe.

I wouldn't bother buying before pg either. You'll have about 8mos to buy stuff from BFP to end (all going well!). In that time there'll easily be a labour weekend/queens birthday weekend sale anyway. Sales come around every year, don't worry! saving the money instead is prob a better option IMO. then when it does happen you can get just what you want when you want. Unfortunately TTC doesnt always lead immed to a baby and all sorts can happen in the time you start to when it actually happens. Like moving house, changing partner (hopefully not but you never know), tastes change, trends change, what is considered necessary changes. and so on...

I'm kinda interested as well, as we will be in the UK next year, and will be TTC around that time. Want to get some cool english stuff.
I was going to set aside some $$ each week for the 9 months, like saving for Xmas and then get what I need when I know what I'm having etc.
I fully plan to get my baby gear off my friends as their babies will all be toddlers/pre-schoolers and not needing their cots/prams etc.

What about the bigger things, like change tables, prams etc? I'm always worried that buying stuff for bubs before getting pregnancy is bound to jinks it.

However MCNs would be a good thing, as they are expensive to buy all at once, and the colours change all the time.

What things would you buy prior to pregnancy for bubs, if you see a good deal around somewhere? I am looking at places like TradeMe and just various other deals and have *permission* (used in its loosest term!!) if I see a really good deal to get it. I have been looking at clothes as well, but I know we'll probably get a lot of them given to us.
