it does extend to grandparents but also encompasses the whanau concept...would be best if he approached it by asking his boss and indicating that as you will need to travel to get to it with the kids you will need his help

it is up to the employer but most will give him the leave - and is up to them whether or not it is paid as it wasnt his grandmother, not been working long...etc...

Hugs Teresa, sorry for your loss.
Immediate family includes the immediate family of your spouse so it would count, altho I'm not sure if the act extends to grandparents or just parents/siblings? BS would be the one to ask.

He should ask his boss. My friend works as a casual at her work (has been there for nearly 5 years - time taken out to have 2 children) and they gave her the day off paid as bereavement leave and that was for her friend that died in the car accident a few weeks ago. Some places are really good and others aren't. Normally after 6mnths you will be entitled to it, but that would also depend on what says in his employment contract if he has 1. My grandmother (Granny) died last Friday and the funeral has been set for Wednesday. Of course I want to take Nat with me and I've just check his contract - it allows for 3 days bereavement leave per year "in accordance with the Holidays Act". I don't know the HA very well, does anyone know what the deal is with b.leave and whether he has to have worked 6 months prior to that or not?
