This is quite normal. The baby eats as much as he wants. You can try feeding him more often, for example 6-8 times a day. I bought a bandana here https://keababies.com/collections/bandana-drool-bibs and now my baby is eating on his own. He likes to eat with a spoon and has started to eat more.

My 16 month old is still only eating very small amounts of food. At one sitting he will have the equivalent of 1/4 cup of smoothie Or 1/2 a plum
Or 1 rice cracker. I have taken him to the paediatrition who reffered him to a speech language therapist. He is on the waiting list for 8 weeks.

He is still mainly breastfed and if not offered the breast, still eats only a small amount of food. He will also chem food and then spit it out.

Is this normal toddler behaviour? How much food do your toddlers eat?

There are plenty of non dairy formulas out there that you can try. The trick i use is... I put on the cartoons and make my baby girl busy in watching and she gets so distracted while watching the cartoons she doesn't even realize that she is eating.

i faced the same problem with my baby girl. She was constipated and had too much gas and that made me think that she might be lactose related issues. most lactation experts suggest waiting until your baby is at least a month old and breastfeeding is well established before introducing a bottle. if you're returning to work start bottle feeding at least two weeks before your start date
so you both have time to adjust. My daughter has just turned 7 months old. She doesn’t have much interest in solids yet as she is always keeping her mouth closed while I’m trying to feed her. I have been trying to get her on the bottle to help fill her up for longer because she has a lot of broken sleeps between the day and night and I think that may be the reason why? I also think she has some sort of dairy allergy because every time she has something that contains cows milk she gets red around her mouth. She does drink water from a bottle but doesn’t seem to like the taste of formula. Does anyone have any recommendations for a baby formula that doesn’t contain dairy? Any advice is appreciated!! Hi all,

I really need help with alternative formula options. I'm a loss at what to do next.

My wee girl (14 weeks) has had issues with not gaining enough weight for some time now. We were told to top her up with forumla but it took several weeks for her to start taking a bottle at which point I then had to have surgery to remove my gallbladder last week. So in a nutshell my milk supply is not what it was and even then I don't think it was enough for her.

I've tried cluster feeding and cluster expressing to up the supply but no luck.

We started using S26 Gold just over a week ago but my baby girl has developed a rash on her face which I think might be from the forumla. The rash has now turned into an infection and she has had to start taking antibiotics.

Her bottle feeds were mostly half breast milk (I get about 50 mls from one express session) and half formula.

The lactation consultant told me that if she is allergic to this formula then apparently she is likely allergic to all formula! This has left me completely lost at what I'm meant to do if my breastmilk is not enough for her and I can't give her formula - How am I meant to help her put on weight

I'm looking for advice on alternative formula I can try. I've read about ones with goats milk and soy protein. Te lactation consultant said soy only ones are not good for a first formula. If anyone has any ideas I am all ears.

My 10 month old has started being really fussy with food. He refuses the breakfast i feed him and will just play with his toast. Lunch and dinner are equally as hard. I have tried finger food, putting my food into pouches, and regular spoon feeding, all which work with little success. I have thought about just waiting until he asks me for food rather than try give it to him when he is not interested but i am affraid that he will just not eat anything or put us too far behind in our day so that he is not having dinner until super late. Does anyone have any suggestions??

Hey there,

I'm a long time reader, first time writer! I'm feeling a little blue at the moment and just wondered if anyone else had been through the same thing.

I fed my first through pregnancy until I was a few weeks pp (he was 3 years 3 months when he weaned, I sobbed) and my supply was insane so I started donating milk through my midwives to ladies in the community who were struggling to establish their supplies. (I think I've topped up 15 babies so far)

For the last 7 months I've been exclusively feeding my second son and an 8 month old baby girl by expressing. She was born early and tiny and spent 6 weeks on nicu. She's so gorgeous and lovely and I just adore her.

But lately no matter what I try my pumping output has dropped, she's now being topped up with formula. I have nothing against formula at all btw, and neither does her mum, but I feel like I've let them down! They wanted to get to a year on mostly bm, and if my last week's output is anything to go by, it's not going to happen! I've dropped from 5 litres a week to 2.5 litres a week, in a matter of weeks.

I feel blue!! I don't know if it's the weaning blues, or the 'I suck' blues, or maybe, dare I say it, guilt because I might in fact feel some relief the end is in sight. (I work full time from home and pumping/washing/sterilising is easy another 2 hours on my day).

GAR, hormones, why you got to be so confusing!

So any other milk donors out there who've been here and done it? Any advice to get rid of the feels?

Hi, I'm doing some research into blenders for making baby food. Just wondering what your experiences are with blenders, if you can recommend any. Obviously we want something that's easy to use, easy to clean, and doesn't take up too much space. A stick blender seems the way to go but is a cheap one good enough, or do you recommend spending the money on getting attachments (ala Kenwood)?

It sounds like your son might be allergic to something in your wife's diet. Both dairy and gluten can be common causes. Are there any known diet issues in your families to give you a place to start? My son had dairy allergies, and would react to *any* dairy in my diet (so I got good at reading labels). He was much better after I made that change, though in his case we also needed reflux medicine as he was very bad. So definitely something to try if you'd like to continue breastfeeding.

However, modern formula milk is very good, so if you decide to use that rather than breastfeed it really is up to you. Your son will grow up healthy and loved regardless :)

My son is 3+ months now, he seems suffering from wind problem after breastfed. 2 weeks ago my wife had mastitis and he was fully on formula for a week as per doctor's advice. During the week he was well & seemed more settled, especially at night other than crying for mum's breast. Last week, after the treatment my wife resumes to breastfeeding and my lo started to cry a lot after feedings, and we could hear the wind in his tummy, he has also poo more often, yellow muddy with some lumps poo. My son never used a sippy cup, he wouldnt hold a bottle or cup high enough to tip the liquid up so I got him a straw cup and he got it in seconds due to the sucking reflex. By 14. months he finally held his arms up high enugh to use a normal cup. Good luck, youve left yourself a good amount of time to transition :-)

I've got a 6mo that has been exclusively BF to date, we have just started solids. For various reasons (life doesn't always go to plan) we never had the chance to teach to bottle feed EBM. I am returning to work in about 4 weeks and trying to get little one to drink from a sippy cup (was suggested we just go straight to a sippy cup).
Would love to hear any suggestions for helping to teach using a sippy cup. I've got four different type to try, also trying to introduce a formula feed during the day so this is established before little one goes into daycare. Try plunket, I went to their family centre in north shore (sure they should have something similar in other places as well) and you stay there for the morning/afternoon and the nurses/lactation consultant will help you with each feed. They also help you to get baby to nap etc so it is a casual day where you just focus on feeding your baby. Hi there,

I exclusively pumped for the first 11 weeks with my little girl. I couldn't get her to latch, and I had very flat nipples. - I didn't like using the breast shields. At about 9 weeks, she kind of worked out what she needed to do. I think it was because I was more relaxed to be honest and she was a little more coordinated. I started with one breast feed a day and continued to express.

I just made sure we had lots of skin to skin time and made sure she wasn't to hungry

Hi everyone I need some help. Little one has been exclusively drinking pumped breast milk for 5 weeks. Baby sometimes drinks from a nipple shield but he doesn't like it very much. I have also tried to put him on my breast but my nipples are a little flat (use to be inverted 5 weeks ago!) and he doesn't open his mouth wife enough or stay on. But for a minute on and off he will suck. I don't have milk supply issues though I wonder if the let down is too full on for him.

My lactation consultant told me to get him to suck on my nipple shield for 15-20 mins each feed but I found doing it made his feed almost an hour long and with the need to pump as well took me almost 2 hours to do one feeding. By then I had to feed again or had to feed earlier and pumping was missed out. My milk went down as I tried this for a few days. To be honest I was too tired to continue doing it and went back to just pumping and feeding.

Now that I have a better handle on motherhood I wanted to do try again but I don't want to go through weening off a nipple shield. If rather go from bottle fed exclusively to breast fed exclusively.

Anyone know how best to do this or if there's a way to do this?

I'm dying to get this sorted as I have to return my rented pump next week. I originally was going to stop breast milk and go straight to formulae when this happened. But I really want to give it another go. I'd love to breastfeed if I could for as long as possible I no longer want to go to formula.

Don't beat yourself up about it, there is nothing wrong with giving her formula. Especially if it helps you take care of all of you. Formula is a perfectly good alternative to breastmilk and much much better than giving her anything else such as water/juice to fill her tummy or starving her (I had breastfeeding advocates suggesting I should add water to my son's bottles of breastmilk to extend them as I just couldn't pump enough for him, horrible advice! ). She will still get all the advantages of breastmilk from you, those few bottles of formula won't make a difference. It is just food after all and in a few weeks she will start solids anyway, and might start needing less milk.

If you really want to give only breastmilk you can try power pumping- where you pump every hour for 10 min for a day or two- but she is old enough for food other than breastmilk and this is so much work and dont always work.

Hi I returned to work part time 3 weeks ago. I have been breast feeding my daughter at her daycare during my lunch time break that they have also been giving her my expressed breast milk when she seems hungry.

My goal was for her to eventually have the bottle for the 3 days she is at daycare. She is only there for 6 hours so it would only really be one proper feed.

The only issue im having is it is now the beginning of week 4 back at work, she is starting to drink more from the bottle (60ml from 10ml her first week) but I am all of a sudden having trouble expressing.

She is 5 and a half months and not on solids yet. Im considering just giving her formula for the 3 days she is there....but its making me feel a little guilty.

Im just not sure I can keep up expressing and having extra milk supply while working, looking after Mr4 and also trying to keep us eating well and go to the gym.

I didnt return to work with my first until he was 18mo and id stopped bff by then so i havent had this issue before.

Some great advice here. I too would wait until baby arrives and see how you go. I bought a medela mini electric and can count on one had the number of times I actually used it. I went a bit OTT last time and bought 2 pumps . a NUK e-motion electric pump and a tommee tippie closer to nature manual one

I found the manual one to be the best loved it, the electric one was SOOOOOOOO noisy and really awkward and annoying

also spent a small fortune on NUK bottles which my baby wouldn't take but he took the closer to nature ones no problem LOL

most pumps fit the particular brand of bottle but you can always pump into the bottle the pump came with then pour into another steralized one, which is what we have done many times :)

I also hoped DH would bottle feed bubs, but my babies stubbornly refused!!

I think nani123's advice to put the money aside and see how it goes is very good. I spent $300 on a breast pump and two babies later I can count how many times it has been used on my fingers and toes. :-)

I struggled with breastfeeding and hired a medela hospital grade pump to get my supply up (pump both sides at once). I also had an avent electric pump which was good but it took a long time as you can only pump one side at a time and it wasn't really strong enough for the amount of time I hsd to pump. I ended up exclusively pumping after a few weeks so bought an unimom hospital grade pump - worked just as good as the medela one and so much cheaper.
My advice would be to put money aside for a breast pump but don't buy one beforehand, you don't know how breastfeeding is going to go and you might need a hospital grade pump or you might decide that breastfeeding is not for you. Or you might like to hand express the odd bottle- they will show you in the hospital how to do it. If breastfeeding goes great you will probably get away with buying the cheapest manual pump. I bought the avent pump first and it is hardly used.
Some pumps only fit some bottles but you do get adaptors but easiest is to buy the pump you like and pump into the bottles/containers that come with the pump and then just pour the milk into the bottles you prefer.
I used medela calma bottles at first which are made to be able to switch easily between breast and bottle but it was really hard to get him to drink from them and they are really expensive. He also didn't really like them so I started using avent bottles when I started pumping full time. My midwife said that it doesn't really matter which bottles you use as long as it is very slow flow and try to keep them to a minimum the first 6 weeks until your supply is established and baby knows how to breastfeed.

Hi,

I'm due with my first in November so trying to get myself organised.
My plan is to breastfeed, but to also pump milk so my husband can do some of the feeding via a bottle too.

So, I want to get a breast pump/ bottles that make it as easy as possible to switch between the two. I saw that Tommy Tippee do closer to nature bottles - are they good? would I be able to use them with any breast pump or one specific one? Are there other bottles that are good for switching between breast and bottle - I assume teets that are most like nipples are best?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

So far my wife is well and baby is growing perfectly. Keeping an eye on her blood pressure but we have a very good midwife. Sounds like you have a great plan once baby is born. :)

trade me sells breastpumps much cheaper than new ones and I guess you'll get double the use out of it :D I've found that electric pumps a waaaaay better than manual pumps but would pay to do your own research.

The first bfeeding class I went to I went alone (and so did the other preg mothers expect one who had her partner and mother there) and the second one I went a good friend (and everyone had a female friend or mother there expect one who went alone and another had her partner there). It's good going with someone and its a great chance to meet other mums due around the same time (and they're free).

Thanks Vanessa,both at is really helpful. I am thinking about domperidone, pumping and that naturopath medication soun good. I will look into it. W are looking at hiring or buying a breast pump so w can both use it as my wife will need to express for when she goes back to work. Baby wil come to my early childhood centre where I teach.classes also synd good and we could go together.

Hi,

I had trouble b/feeding my first baby, tried anything and everything that anyone would suggest to increase my milk supply as I had next to nothing (literally). I went on domperidone medication from my gp. My MW had said she knew of someone or had a client who adopted a baby from day dot and wanted to bfeed the baby and did so successfully with this medication. I also used naturopham medication from the chemist and that was the only thing that really made me leak.

Hope this helps. I would suggest you both express (hand or pump) if you can also successfully bfeed to keep up your supply as well. I'm 32 weeks preg with my second baby and have already been to two bfeeding classes so I would suggest these too.

Bfeeding is an awesome experience and I know my partner often wished he had some capacity for feeding out little one. In saying that, once we started on the bottle too he got a massive kick out of that.

My wife is 20 weeks pregnant and I am very interested in breast feeding too, talked to gp and got advice from endocrinologist and all think it is possible.
Any one heard of this or breastfed an adopted or fostered baby? Know I will need medication and to pump lots and might not produce much milk but just want the experience. I may not be able to carry a baby myself aft infertility and a miscarriage and just want part of the experience my wife is having.

Hi there,

Fergus got to a stage around 6 months that he didn't want to be fed anything, and he was over mashed food (had only started solids at 5m).
That was when we made the decision to move to Baby Lead Weaning and have never looked back. He eats what we eat and he feeds himself- I still help him with yoghurt though.
This has stopped the screaming, head turning, and fussing around dinner time. Hi guys,

Havnt been on here for a loooong time. My baby girl was born on 6th february 2013 and is now 5 and a half months. She started solids when she was 4 months 1 week and has been doing great. Just in the last week or two she has become really fussy all the time and when it comes to meal times, she doesnt seem to want to eat, even though she is hungry. She will eat if we give he something new and interesting like mandarins in the mesh bag thingi. Otherwise she just wont eat from a spoon anymore. She just turns her head and screams. She is constantly attention seeking and you have to be totally focussing on her for her to be happy.

What do i do?

best times for expressing for me are straight after the 7am feed or after the 10amish feed. make sure you're drinking enough water. I find expressing first thing in the morning gives me the most milk, and I do it straight after a shower when they are still warm, plus holding it with both hands and getting a great suction and long slow pumps gets me the most milk. Thanks Epictraveller. I am in Nelson (just moved back from Cairns), however, there doesn't seem to be many options here so casting my net a bit wider.... I was thinking I could have a consultation online. But I should also look into the local support groups. Hi all!

I'm hoping someone can give me some advice. I'm wanting to return to work part tim shortly, and my girl is solely breast fed. I've gotten a hand pump to express for her, and although she's getting plenty of milk from me, I can't seem to be able to pump more than 40mls or so. This is clearly not enough and it takes nearly 90 minutes to get that! I've watched some instructional videos, and I get started really well, and then everything kind of just fizzles out and nothing more will come. That is really interesting as i had to start colostrum harvesting at 34 weeks due to Gestational Diabetes, on recommendation of the diabetic midwives at CHC Women's. I managed to get off 12mls, I was really grateful for this because i ended up having her at 36 weeks, 5 days due to pre eclampsia and baby was in the lower 5th percentile. has anyone had any trouble with the Karicare 3 Gold Plus Toddler Formula? Aggghhhh feel your pain, my @@ go insane when my milk comes in. Hand expressing off in the shower does help just enough to be comfortable first thing in the morning & also I found just expressing off a small amount of 10-20ml per boob helped hugely as well. Tamara, the best thing for engorged breasts is actually expressing. You don't have to express until the breast is empty but enough to relieve the pain and any blockage that may be there. I found that using a heated up wheat bag for a few minutes first, and then expressing from both sides for 10 - 15 minutes really helped. Then use a cold pack afterward. It shouldn't increase your milk supply, as your body will only reproduce what you have removed, and you may need to do this until your baby can drain them herself and your body has naturally adjusted to her needs. Engorged breasts that are not emptied can actually lead to mastitis so it is worth expressing off a bit to avoid that.

I have alot of milk and my boy only takes a small amount for the moment, and I had engorged breasts to start off with. It is all under control now, unless he has not fed enough then I just express off about 50ml from each side and wait til the next feed.

I would perhaps research the cabbage leaves as I heard it can dry up your milk supply. Not entirely sure if this is right or not though.

Just hand express off a bit to make it more comfortable for you and easier for her to latch on. You dont want to muck with your supply too much. You could try cabbage leaves, put a cold leaf on your boobs after a feed, avoiding the nipple and leave there until it wilts, then throw away, try it a couple of times a day, also massaging the boobs helps, maybe just hand express a little. you poor thing! I've woken up the past two mornings with engorged breasts and the only thing that fixed them was expressing milk about 15 mins after I'd fed my baby. But if you're not keen on that idea,

Hi,
I am new on here.

I have just given birth to my very beautiful daughter a few days ago, we are home safe and sound but...oh, what a terrible time I am having with engorged breasts, they are so hot and painful and she is not feeding for very long periods of time, but she is gaining weight, so I imagine I am producing loads of milk. I don't want to pump as that will overstimulate them. Any suggestions anyone has will be most welcome!

Bealaa I take blessed thistle and fenugreek (spelling) and I really think this helped my volume and quality!

Also I was told by ALL midwives (I was on the maternity ward for over a week pre-birth) and two lactation consultants that any nipple stimulation for harvesting could induce labour. Brewers yeast is good... also nuts and oats and bananas.

A teaspoon of Brewers yeast in my daily smoothy does the trick for me. Enough so I had to cut back on my daily consumption! Hi there, I was in the exact same situation as you. With my first son I did not make even one drop of milk for him. Nothing came out in the shower, when I hand expressed, even when I pumped with a hospital grade pump after birth - nothing worked. Regretfully we ended up formula feeding him but he is a happy and healthy 2.5 year old now so I have come to terms with that decision :)

With my second pregnancy I was told by my midwife that I should pump 5 times a day, four weeks out from my due date and also take 5W herbal pills which encourage milk production. Once my son was born I put him to the breast so he could hopefully get some colostrum, again my breasts didn't seem like there was much there. I was told to take blessed thissle 4 times a day and pump 5 times per day and put baby to the breast as often as possible for as long as possible (he had a posterior tongue tie which made it unbearable to feed him).

By day 5 still no milk.I decided to up the pumping to 10 times per day for 20mins each pump (at the time I had a medela mini electric) so ended up sitting on the pump for an hour each time with little rests in between.

I was so determined to keep going. I eventually got my first drop of milk when he was 7 days old, Yay! I hand expressed 5 ml out for bubs which took about 10mins! But I was so excited.

With all the problems with my sons tongue and latch and constant visits from lactation consultant and midwife I decided to express feed him. I kept up with the 10 pumps per day for 4 weeks and have just dropped down to 8 pumps per day. My son is nearly 6 weeks old and I have been feeded him exclusively with breast milk :)

It is like a full time job but it has been so worth it. From 2 weeks old I started using a medela freestyle pump, quite costly though.

I hope you are able to put bubs to the breast becasue that will definitely easier. Both times I tried to put him back on he couldn't get the milk out effectively and I ended up in hospital with mastitus twice - ouch. If you do end up pumping exclusively though I recommend the freestyle - I still have a toddler to run around after so I need to be mobile :)

I am going through this with Mr 5months. He is so nosey at the moment and it is at home too! If I talk/have a drink/sneeze he pops off and gives me this *look* as if to say what! Quiet please. Anyone else have issues with food getting stuck in the top of babies palate?

I don't usually notice until I try to feed her & she gags or bites me.

Only affects her when I give her whole foods, ie meat or rice cracker. Im sure this has been discused but my 3 month old wont take a bottle. She took one a day until 6 weeks wnd now refuses. We have tried different teats, different people, frozen breastmilk, refrigerated breastmilk and fresh breastmilk. I have even tried formula. Does anyone have any tricks that might work?

Hi everyone! My situation is that I have a 18 month old and a % month old. My partner goes to work all day so I do all the house work and everything the girls. I had to put my youngest on formula because I'm only making enough milk for a short feed in the middle of the night. I hate not being able to feed my baby and it's really getting me down. Does anyone one have any suhestions on what I can do to build up my supply?
