I am pregnant to my lovely twins due to this June'2016. And thus, I plan to give birth to my twins at NZ. We just received our residency at November'2015 and this will be our first time that we will be coming to NZ to start our new life and our family ;))..

Right now, I am really curious, as NZ residents, when I will give birth to my twins in NZ in June, will my babies be NZ citizen directly??or not?? Please advise.. Thanks in advance..

Cheers!!

How are the behaviour probs going?

Congrats to those who have recently had twins, and who have found out they are pregnant with twins! How are you all going?

Our twin girls turned 1 a couple of months ago and I am loving this age. They are so much fun and learning so much every day. Not walking yet but not far away! We are having trouble with one getting a bit jealous of the other at the moment, every time I go to pick up Isabella Ruby will come racing over crying for me to pick her up and starts climbing all over me. Isabella has bad eczema so we have been spending a bit of time comforting her lately and constantly putting on creams etc. Trying to give Ruby her own special time too and pick her up first etc so she feels special. Also having a prob with fighting already!! They do the usual fighting over toys but Ruby is a real bully and is always hitting Isabella in the face with toys etc...Anybody else have this prob?

You'll also get referred to an OB - standard practice for multiple pregnancies but you can also have an independent midwife if you wish.

I was starving for the whole first trimester and ate all the time to ward of the nausea but still lost weight and yep the tiredness is crazy, I used to leave work early to go home and sleep!

There's a great Facebook page for parents of multiples with lots of support (NZMBA) and also a page for buying/selling twin stuff at great prices cos we all understand how expensive having multiples is (NZ BUY/SELL/SWAP TWIN CLOTHES/TOYS)

Welcome to the crazy, amazing world of multiples :-)

You will be entitled to 240 hours (I think that's the amount) of homehelp which you can use for a cleaner or nanny etc when the twins arrive. I know some people use student nanny's for this cos they are cheaper. I've also heard there is a decent amount of paperwork to get it sorted so might be worth getting that started with WINZ.

How exciting :)

Seagersbaby - I found I went through phases of thing - not being able to sleep, needing to pee alot, everything I had tended to last for a while and then get better, by the end as huge and uncomfortable as I was I was sleeping better than I did early on so I hope it gets better for you too :)

Aww Shells hang in there hun!! We have days like that too - lately Ruby has been screaming in the afternoons and it's so hard to calm her down. Our girls tend to get like that when they are overtired, going through a growth spurt, or have had abig day out the day before. I would do as Danda suggested - maybe get him up and do the routine again, or put them in a pushchair and go for a walk? When one of ours gets like that sometimes the only thing that halps is to get them and have them cuddle into you on the couch - usually then crash out straight away. Im not someone who picks my babies up when they cry - I like to let them self settle, but when they get really upset like that and im pulling my hair out I know that will work. I dont do it again the next time in case it starts a habit and they don't usually get upset again so it works well for me. Hope you find something that helps! We use dummies as comforters for ours and wouldnt be without them. Big hugs xo

It really is tough when they won't settle. And if they're anything like my two, they get into a cycle of overtiredness.
Most pro sleep training advocates advise against sleep training until at least 5 months.

A few things off the top of my head.

Given that it's been an hour already you might need to get them up and do the feed, play, sleep routine again.

How long were they up before you tried putting them down? Often in the morning the awake time is less than usual so you could try settling them at 45-60 mins.

Can you seperate them for a bit? Bring one into the lounge? One crying baby is def easier to deal with than two and stressing about the other one waking is horrible (I still do it!)

Have you got the fan going? Even though it's not hot, the white noise might help. Or have you got a radio you can tune to static?

Have you tried using a dummy? I don't like dummies but gave them to my two out of deseperation at the same age yours are. While they weren't a cure they did work a bit.

Tight swaddling

And the miracle cure for us was using hammocks for day sleeps. Do you know anyone who could lend you one? We started with one and it worked so well we promptly got another one. My girls had all day sleeps in them until they were 6 months.

Hang in there, you'll nail it but it does take some hard work.

Loving the pics!!! Yay for sleeping through the night, thats awesome, nice for you to get some decent sleep! Ours sleep after every feed during the day for between 1-3hours, although when it's really hot they wouldn't sleep at all, we were wrapping them and it was too hot but they wouldnt sleep unwrapped. We have just gotten back from our holiday in Oz and it was so hot there - they slept unwrapped straight away and have been ever since which is awesome, now they sleep even on hot days but still need a fan for their room.

Trip to Oz was good, the girls were pretty good on the plane, slept for about an hour in the bassinette so we got to eat and even watch a bit of a movie which was great. They let us take our Mountain Buggy all the way to the gate which was the biggest thing we were worried about, front packs are def a must though when going from gate to plane and plane to baggage pickup.

Congrats on your pregnancies seagersbaby and baby giraffe!! I have 4 month old frat girls - we had two sacs and placentas also and the girls look quite similar so may one day get the test done unless they start looking really different. They say ID twins have the same eye and hair colour and otherwise can have totally different face shapes etc - is this true?It looks as though our girls eyes are starting to change to diff colours.

We had our first scan at 5-6weeks and there was two sacks but one baby was much smaller and we were told at the next scan we would probably only have 1 baby - but next scan there were 2 with great heart beats and the same size. Not sure what seeing no yolk sacs means babygiraffe - did the radiologist (?) say much about it?
I think the heat has a lot to answer for too. We have started swaddling again and this seems to have helped. Plus we bought a fan for their room. They seem to have a decent sleep in the morning and then another at about lunch time. Later in the day though at around 2:30pm-3pm it seems to turn to custard! They don't want to sleep and we end up killing time till we can put them down for the night at about 5:30-6pm at that time they are really grumpy. There is so much to learn eh! I'm amazed at how much sleep they are actually supposed to be getting. I ended up ringing Plunket because i thought surely we can't expect them to sleep 12 hours over night then have naps during the day as well but they said we should still be trying to get them down within the hour to an hour and a half.

I'd been forcing days sleeps for ages anyway and even a small nap meant they were a complete nightmare to settle at night. As for day sleeps those little ratbags def need more than none or 20 mins to keep growing & developing (at 4 months the recommended amount is 11-12 hours overnight and 3-4 hours during the day).

Mine gave me the runaround at about the same age with day sleeps - so much so that I even considered going back to work and getting a nanny cos it felt too hard! That was actually the time I joined OB, I was so desperate for some tips. What worked for us in the end was going back to tight swaddling, dummies and putting them in hammocks for their day sleeps (they stayed sleeping in the hammocks during the day till they were about 6 months). Mine were also catnappers (45 mins) so they stayed on 3 day sleeps till they were quite old.

TheSleepstore.co.nz has lots of great articles on sleep and also a FB forum page you might find useful. Hope you find something that works to get them settling, my two have just dropped their day sleeps and it certainly does make for a long day!

Edited by Danda08 - 03 January 2013 at 10:49am

I feel normal again! Kels do your two sleep at all during the day? We don't get any day sleeps now they are sleeping through. I still try though and we would be lucky to get maybe 20 mins if we are lucky. I guess this is the trade off but hard to entertain 2 babies all day especially when they get grumpy cause they are tired! It's so good having them sleep through the night though. Lats night they slept 12.5 hours!

I hope everyone is having a great start to 2013!

I would agree that you'll need lots and lots of spill cloths and bum cloths ( if you don't want to use disposable ones). We had to go back twice to buy more of both types.

I found communicating with the outside world a bit tricky while I was on the postnatal ward and then rooming in at SCBU for 10 days. So if you have a smart phone or ipad that you can use to connect to the world... but you'll also be very busy expressing etc. and getting very little sleep, so won't be able to think too much of the outside world. At times I found it hard to find the time to have a shower inbetween all the expressing and trying to catch up on sleep.

Bring clothes that are comfy but not necessarily only PJ's as you might be able to walk around like a normal person amongst all hospital staff if your babies are still in SCBU and you are well but not yet discharged or rooming in.

I had a giant very wide and very long soft scarf (knitted viscose/cotton) and it was the best thing ever as I could use it to cover up when otherwise quite exposed in breastfeeding situations as with huge boobs full of milk in the early days and nurses trying to help you latching on two babies, nursing tops that just have a small opening didn't really work, I basically sat there topless a lot of the time.

Our twins were born at 37weeks and weighed 6lbs, but ony fit prem clothes and we didnt have enough packed. Also cloths and bibs - you need tons. Our girls are very spilly so the clothes, bibs and cloths we go through is just crazy - we had to go out and buy more of those things so I would say thats what we wished we knew to pack more of. For me I found I packed way too much clothing - I was only there for two days and wore the same thing the whole time until I left the hospital so thats something to think about - but all depends when they are born and how you and they are - you could be in for longer so I guess it pays to be prepared :)

We were going in for an early scan as we had a mc a couple months before at 6 weeks so were keen to see that this one was viable. It was clear from the start there were two, all the lady said was "do you see what im seeing?"... I was very sick and had massive HCG levels so we had mentioned the idea of twins leading up to the scan, but never gave it much thought as its not in either family.

So my husband and I just laughed for a bit then went quiet. My husband came to terms with it faster then I did, dont think im there yet, but being so very sick does tend to take the shine off things :)

The plan was to fed them up during the day so they had enough store to get them through the night.

So during the day I fed them 3-4 hourly, gave them an EBM bottle early in the evening so DH could help (and cos I found the cluster feeding exhausting). I also woke them around 10.30pm for a late feed (tried dreamfeeding but it didn't work).
They started sleeping through the night at 10.5 weeks and dropped the late feed around 5.5 months which was when I introduced solids. They probably would have been fine without it earlier but I never thought to drop it until one started refusing it.

Yep we've had the Santa photo done, bit harder than previous years cos they were a bit apprenhensive about Santa, hehe.

To post a photo select the arrow icon for full reply editor and then click one of the image uploader/inserter images :-)

Edited by Danda08 - 14 December 2012 at 1:41pm

Love the outfits too! Wow! 12 hours sleep overnight! That sounds amazing :) at the moment we are stoked if we get 5 hours. Normally it's 3-4 hours. I'm sure we will get there soon. Any advice on how to get them to sleep through the night? I've just been demand feeding. During the day if only one wakes i don't wake the other to feed but at night i i wake them both. It feels a bit mean but chances are if i don't wake the other one they will wake when i am feeding the first one. Anyway you know how it goes!

Danda08, you are going to have a fun xmas! Have you had your photo's with Santa? It must be such a fun age. I bet they keep you busy too!

Kels, how do you upload a photo? I'm hopeless, i consider myself to be fairly computer literate but not when it comes to Oh Baby! :)

Congrats guest 78702 on your twin pregnancy!Hope it's going well so far :) I have fraternal girls who are 3 months old, happy to help with any questions if you ever have any. All of the girls on here have been so helpful during my pregnancy and after.

Yay so great to hear from you Shells!!! I have been thinking about you alot and wondering how you have been getting on. Sounds like a very fast labour and good that it all went well and your little ones didnt have to spend much time in scbu! Love the names :) Fantatstic you are breastfeeding - I am in awe of you. Can't wait to see a pic! It is def hard work, but when you get those smiles it's so so worth every minute. The girls have started to really notice each other now, they will look at each other and smile and touch each other, it just melts your heart.

We are all doing well, Isabella and Ruby are now 3 months old, we have lots of smiles & they are so active now - loving to kick constantly, and we are getting lots of cooing and baby "talk". They have just started sleeping 12 hours over night which is just amazing, ice to wake up feeling fresh after a good sleep. We are off to Ozzie in 2 weeks so will be interesting to see how that goes - the flight, time difference and the heat. Here is a pic of the girls (sorry if its huge):

It's been ages since ive been on here! Had my babies at 35+3 weeks. They were born on October 7th. Slack eh! Havent been on here to update everyone. Babies names are Ailish and Declan. Ailish was 2.1kg and Declan was 2.4kg. Declan spent 3 days in NICU as he had some fluid on his lungs and had 24 hours under the lights as he was a bit jaundice. They are both doing well and getting big fast!!

My waters broke at 6:45am on a Sunday morning and by 10:10am they were born by C-section. I had started contracting so felt a bit ripped off that i didnt get to push but none of that matters now that they are here.

I must say, it's been a hard road! It's harder than i expected but so rewarding watching them grow. I'm managing to fully breastfeed them which i'm so happy about although that is also really hard work! Not sure what i expected but i think everything is hard when your so sleep deprived. I don't know how you ladies with other children do it. Two is enough for us :)

Kels hows things with you? I hope everyone is well. I'll post a pick soon if i can work out how to do it!

Isabella was a great feeder & latcher, but Ruby has poor sucking reflex and was losing too much weight because she was getting so tired trying to breastfeed and not getting enough, then when we went to top her feeds up with formula she was so tired she wouldnt drink any of that either, so midwife suggested just feed her formula and we started her on a teat with a faster flow so she didnt have to suck so hard and now shes doing so well and keeping up with Isabella. I stopped b/feeding Isabella when my partner went back to work,he only had a week off and the day before he went back we were trying ways of me feeding them both at the same time and it just wasnt working, we couldnt figure out how it could be done and I was having one of my BAD days so we decided to formula feed both. Was stoked to have breastfed them both for a week though as I couldnt at all with my first, and we went into it saying from the begining that we would do the best we could. Am a little gutted though...but at the same time it's nice having them feeding 4hourly and sleeping well - I dont know how you twins mums who breastfed both did it and I have SO much admiration for you.

They picked up on a size difference at 28 weeks. A also had reduced fluid in her sac.
I don't think we were IUGR, were never given a medical term but she was small for dates. We were on weekly scans from 28 weeks. (Growth every 2nd week and just doppler scan weekly)
We made it to 35 weeks at which point A hadn't grown in a week and also there was increased resistance in the placenta so the decision was made to deliver.

I had a c-section as A was the second twin, and with no previous labour history, they didn't know how she would do with 2 labours.

At birth she was 1.65kgs and E was 2.25kgs. We spend 10 days in NICU. A was fine when she was born (incubator for 3 days and then just needed to grow). E needed CPAP for 3 days.
This was as the doctors had suspected as A had been under stress pre birth whereas E had just been cruising along and whipped out unsuspectingly

Congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Your babies are just gorgeous! (Sigh, I want babies, not toddlers!) Sorry I haven't been able to check in here for a few days and am now kicking myself that I haven't as I have missed out on your great news! Your birth story sounded pretty similar to mine. You did so well! How is the breast feeding going? I found it pretty painful for quite a while...

Yea I know what you mean about the sleeping, I found it easier to sleep during the day too and couldnt go without having a nap either in the morning or mid avo. My sleeping did get better tho towards the end, weird but I was getting a decent sleep in the last month or so - hurt like hell to roll over but apart from that I could sleep...earlier on I just couldnt sleep, so maybe it will get better for you? How many weeks are you now Shells?

Things are going pretty good, we have our good and bad days - usually based on how much sleep i've had & how hormonal I am haha! They are pretty well behaved though, don't really cry unless it's coming up to feed time - Isabella always cries if her hat slips down and covers her eyes though lol. They are basically just eating and sleeping so its not too bad at the moment! It's so amazing having two - twice the cuddles & happiness :)

    Author: Kels152
Subject: Twins or Triplets or more!
Posted: 13 September 2012 at 12:13am

Hi everyone, our gorgeous girls Ruby & Isabella were born yesterday morning (Tues) - Isabella at 8.07am weighing 2.79kg, and Ruby at 8.45am weighing 2.73kg.

Water broke at 11pm Mon night, went straight in but nothing was happening, midwife tested & confirmed it was my water but wasnt sure which sac it had come from, so she broke Twin A's membranes to get things moving. Twin A was LOP so I was having decent contractions but not really getting anywhere. Ended up having an Epidural which was fantastic, and after I was able to relax I dilated the remainder pretty quickly. Pushed for about 10mins until Isabella was born, everything well with her. Then Twin B decided to stay breech and was unable to be turned, her heart rate was good so the Dr and Midwife opted for breech delivery which was hard but not too bad at all. Once she wasdown low enough I prob pushed for about 20minutes and Ruby was born. She was a bit floppy and stunned for they had to get her breathing sorted which was very scary, but with so many people in the room we felt very well looked after & everyone did an amazing job at letting us know what was happening. After 10mins or so I had both bubs skin to skin and everything winding down - no tear or anything& recovery is really really good! Both girls are doing well - think we can go home tomorrow. They had a lot of mucus they've had trouble coughing up which has been a bit scary, but that seems to have cleared up today and their feeding is getting better :)

Such a novel!! Thought it might be helpful for you Shells to hear about my experience, it's been really amazing and nowhere near as scary and complicated as I thought... :)

So I went in there saying I don't want to go over 38weeks, and that's why my midwife started doing a sweep last week - so I would hopefully have them before hitting 38weeks. I think the OB is letting me go till 38+2 because he thinks i'll go before - but who knows, it's up to my body!!!

I'm not keen on going over 38wks and he seemed to think that I would have them before then naturally so fingers crossed.
I haven't had any other signs labour might be starting sometime soon since the contractions last week so a bit gutted, but have another sweep tomorrow which will hopefully get things moving...not holding my breath this time tho!!

I can't imagine you'll get to 38+2 if you already had contractions and had your show. I can imagine you can't wait to have your babies out (if they aren't there already by now!)! All the best!
My impression was they could set everything up for an epi but only inject the drug into the line when needed. And if is has to be really quick they can give you an injection (or so) which gives you a fully blown paralysis all the way down, rather than the gradual one that you get with an epi, or in case of emergency they give you a full anaethetic (sp?) but I must admit I am not fully up to date... anyone?

There is the risk with twins that they come early, and I dont know about everyone else but for me at 34weeks it was hard just walking, let alone moving house, so I would say you would want to be all in and settled by then so you can relax a bit

I have looked into flying with babies as we are going to Oz when they are 12-16weeks old and when booking our tickets I noticed that some airlines wont let you travel with 2 if you're on your own, so may pay to have a look around and see which airlines allow it.
