So much better for her teeth and easier when your out and about plus you dont have to worry about steralising. Does she sleep in her own bed during the day? Perhaps start there if not. There will be tears, theres no way there wont be at her age. Maybe start a routine. Eg shower/bath, brush teeth, story and cuddle with mum before bed. I used a cry it out method with my son and it took 2 nights before he started getting it. Its up to you weither you do or not but theres lots of info if you google.

Are you on FB? We catch up there regularly enough :)

Maybe Olivia is struggling with sleep association? ie. expecting the boob when she wakes up. I read somewhere that from 5 months on babies wake up fully after every sleep cycle so whatever they need to settle themselves they cry out for.

For us, we did let Josiah cry. The first night was terrible but the next was better and the third night was fine. He has a dummy and a floppy rabbit which he only has at bedtime so he knows it's time to sleep.

Still hungry perhaps too? Hunger has played a massive part when Josiah slept badly. It improved massively when he was on solids and having a good 3 meals a day.

It's so hard, isn't it? Not knowing why and trying to figure it all out. From our experience, it takes being consistent with bedtime routines and how long you leave them to cry etc, so they know everything is okay but it's sleep time now.

Gosh, hope this helps a little?

For example with LJ we really put in place the up for one hour down for two- so she would stay in bed for 2 hours regardless. I fed her 3 hourly so that wasn't a problem. We used a dummy after we let her cry for 5 minutes. At the moment at night we are letting her cry for 5, going in, letting her cry for 10, going in. And every time we make it 2 minutes longer til she gets the message. last night she slept from 8-6.30 so that was amazing for us!

Hope you all and your babies are doing well.

Danielle is growing like a weed. She's 4 months old (or 18 weeks on Friday), has 2 teeth and is currently teething the next couple. So far she's learnt to roll from tummy to back but not back to tummy though she gets about 2/3 of the way there. She's allergic or intolerant (not sure which)to dairy products so I've had to use almond milk and goats cheese to satisfy any needs in that regards.

We've started trying her with a teaspoon of farex cereal and breastmilk every couple of days. She's doing well with it. Doesn't push it out at all but I'm only taking it slowly with her.

She loves the jolly jumper and standing up with mummy's help and playing with a set of musical keys that Blake got for his birthday last year.

Take care ladies. I'll try to check back a lot sooner than previous.

So glad there was no drama :)

C has been waking often the last few nights, not sure if its because he has been going through a growth spurt or whether he has been unsettled from moving to the cot and being in a sleeping bag rather than being swaddled in the bassinet.
Last night he went from 9-4.30am! then 4.45-7. so glad his feeds are getting shorter too, like 10-15 mins.
Pm, isnt the gurgling, cooing and smiling so worth the hard work?
C is getting so animated now, he is rolling really well front to back and is working on the back to front roll now. ah! so cute.

I'm really enjoying being a mum now all the hard part is over. Isn't this age amazing? Of course, our babies are lovely as newborns, but there is something special when they can communicate and play and return their love. Well done on moving full onto formula...I'm debating about whether or not to, LM has been playing around too much at feedtimes and I wondered if having both is just too confusing for him or allowing him to be silly. Not sure.

Kat, hope your wee girl is better!!! Poor thing. They must have no clue as to why they're feeling a certain way and can't tell us where they're feeling sick or hurting.

Well done on all the sleeps, ladies! As for LM, he's doing a dream feed between 9-10, a feed and change between 2-3 then straight to 7.30. I'd be happy if he went through, but I'm pretty happy with that. I feel fine and if I don't, I just laze around for the day or nap.

Kat, there is a March group. PM me your name and I'll add you, though we don't use it very often. Perhaps you could get us going?

Nights are starting to be pretty good with a handful of all nighters mixed in with 7-3 dummy then through to 6 or 7. I still tend to wake up expecting him to wake, but we are all getting there :)

Starting to introduce a cuddly type thing as part of little mans self soothing, while we are still using the dummy, and night time routine. Little man is also now fully formula fed after a horrendous time introducing the bottle and attempting mix feeding - tears all round, screaming fits and refusal to feed (from the bottle) from my little man meant I just couldn't take it and decided we needed to make the full shift. I was pretty devastated about giving up Bfeeding, but, as we needed him to be accepting a bottle for me to start back at work part time, it is just what we had to do - I am finally fine with it.

Little man is full of gurgles and coos, smiling, occassional giggles (such a tease), rolling and lots of hand play which is lovely to see. Really enjoying my little man and all that he is up to at the moment!

Hope everyone else is well!

Paranoid he is gonna get whooping cough really... Doc said its stil only upper respiratory and not moved to his chest yet so here's hoping we over the worst of it. He had a better day today, not as clingy but still not well.

Have been very fortunate so far that my darling hasn't been sick.
I'm going to get her first jabs in the next few weeks. DH and I have decided to move over to Australia. Because there is just no work for my man here, is working 3 jobs at the moment and the secondary tax is just murder (but of course there is no full time work), we have considered relocating to a different part of NZ, but I think it's just time we made the move, while LJ is still young and doesn't knwo what's going onn. We want to be able to have a place of our own.

So so glad to hear of good sleeps.
And to those who are formula feeding do not be hard on yourself. Trust your maternal instincts. I have once again gone back on domperadone for my milk supply, i had a lovely understanding doctor who said I probably know my baby best and if I'm not convinced she's getting enough then she probably isn't.

My dad is getting married Friday! What an exciting celebration. I hope you all had some joy in your weeks xxx

But ive missed so much im just throwing myself in. We had a rough start, hospital for several weeks, BFing issues, depression etc etc. But we are finally getting to the light at the end of the tunnel.
My little girl is 11wks2days and shes adorable, sleeping well, finally eating well, and im loving my new journey.

Peppermint I totally understand how you feel about the formula feeding. I havent been able to breast feed my girl from day one. Yet I was pressured to keep trying and keep trying. Even though my baby girl would scream everytime I tried to BF and end up getting so upset and then id get stressed out and the bad cycle begins. Sooo I decided to go against everybody elses judgements and do what worked for me and my baby. I now express and formula feed. And she is such a happy little girl. The judgements can be so upsetting and it makes u second guess all your maternal instincts. Honestly I would just suggest to listen to your baby, you know what he needs and wants so trust yourself.
Also, just about your supply, have you asked your doctor about a medication to help milk supply?? If u havent yet, could be something to consider if you were interested. Im currently on it because my supply sometimes lacks if I dont get the chance to express as often as I should. It makes a difference. Just thought Id let u know. Sorry I cant remember the name of it.

Anyway hope everybodies doing well. Sorry Ive missed out on so much.

I have no experience with them but I have seen dummies with clip on bits or something that help ease congestion.

We started introducing the bottle to make my pending return to work part time easier to manage, but we had suxh huge battles moving between breast and bottle, it was getting too hard. So we looked at replacing a feed, but with my poor supply expressing the feed in advance wasn't working so we went to formula. Only, the battles became horrendous and continued either until he was all screamed out and starving and accepted the bottle, or he was too tired to feed. So, we have shifted to full bottle and formula through the day and today, finally, every bottle has been accepted well, and he has taken really good amounts. I am still b feeding in the middle of the night as required.

Thanks for the support. I know I have nothing to feel guilty about, but it's so hard to shake the feeling I have let my little boy down when god we worked hard to get to where we were. In saying that, I am incredibly proud of my prem boy and that we were ever able to b feed in the first place!

What made you change? I've been giving formula top ups to LM since he was 6 weeks, though TBH, he takes more formula now than breast milk. I did feel guilty at first, but when I saw how filling it was for him and how much it helped him sleep etc, I felt good about the decision. There is no right or wrong PM, we are made to feel guilty like we're going to kill our babies in so many ways. Seriously, I have done so many things "wrong" - lol. I side sleep LM, formula top up and I've started a little solids at 3 months. But I know what's right for him and so far, nothing has gone wrong! Brewers yeast is available from most health food shops. I drink at least one glass per day but where I can I do one in the morning and one at night before I go to bed as I struggle with my supply overnight and it has made a big difference. It doesn't taste the best but I just down it and get it over with.

I have had to give my boy a formula top up after each feed as he wasn't gaining weight fast enough (80g a week) and I really felt my milk quality had declined as he never seemed full after a feed, but now he feeds for 30mins and is alot happier. I still give the formula top ups anyway, but hope to drop these eventually. The difference is he went from only gaining 80g in one week, to gaining 370g in one week. I do use Domperidome too, and also take fenugreek capsules, also bought from a health food shop.

I am hoping to feed through winter if I can, and then switch to fully formula fed from August. So far the yeast / complan / fenugreek mix makes me feel this could be possible. Good luck!
Apparently its an old wive's trick (sis says its pretty common at her daycare)

JJ, totally! boobies feel soft most of the time... only really if it has been a really long time since a feed (usually the first night feed).
I'm still taking the domperidrone... forgot the last couple of days and really noticed the difference with C being more cranky and taking forever to feed... its like he knew there was less than normal there and was trying to tell me so. Been giving C a second bottle the last few days, probably because I had stopped taking the tablets and he needed the top up. Gets really settled after that though so its not a bad thing!

And the short last sleep.. I notice C is wet too, so going to try to change him at the 4am ish feed so he is fresh and maybe will sleep longer? Although I am a wuss when it comes to the cold so havent been doing it lately unless it is mega full. Bad momma :(
I think it is something about your body being more efficient at producing. I know I feel like I don't have anything when I am not full, but I am having a hard time with supply and everyone is totally different. Maybe talk to plunket and see what they think, particularly in regard to weight gain.

Funnily enough I thought giving my little man formula at night might get us longer through the night...not at all, it is just the same :)

Waterbaby, hang in there, it does get better. We use the Baby Whisperers 'supervised settling' as a guide for our CIO timings. I can cope so much better when I have a count down timer on. Only difference is I stay in the room as long as it takes to calm my little one instead of limiting that time too.

Anyone noticed a little technique your babe likes as comfort? My boy responds really well to a hand resting lightly by his head, or gently stroking his forehead or bridge of his nose. So cute :)

Just remember PND is actually really common. I chose not to be medicated and I'm feeling a lot better now but being a mother is extremely stressful business- the medication isn't forever! It's about keeping you sane and feel better in yourself so you can look after your baby :)

Pookie LJ is sleeping exactly the same kinda deal at the moment. 7pm-1am then til about 4...I try and dummy her to take her til at least 5 and then I change her etc. Because I find if i just feed her and put her back to bed she doesn't sleep for long! probably cause shes wet.

Those of us who are breastfeeding:
Do your boobs feel really full just before a feed? or like, hard or maybe even engorged?
I stopped taking the domperadone for my milk supply just because it was such a hassle to go to the doctor, but LJ has only put on 230g in the last 3 weeks, which is very very minimal weight gain.
My boobs always feel soft and I know that she is getting milk but even after her 6 hour stretch at night they don't feel very full. Am just wondering if it's worth going back on the domperadone maybe if she got more milk she would sleep for longer.

I really really wish we had a fireplace! The first pill I took gave me a tonne of reactions but the next one I've had nothing, except a few days where I've felt worse. But I feel more like myself now. And scary about the swaddle at least you heard him, poor wee thing.

Well poor C can't catch a break and has picked up a virus from when we were at the Dr for his imm's on Monday. Am a bit peeved actually as his temp as you know was high on Monday night so we called plunketline and told them it was 38.1 and they said it was reaction to imm's and not to worry just give him pamol. Anyway told the Dr this today and she was fuming as she said underarm temp of this high is WAY TOO HIGH and we should have been told to go to the Dr straight away as it can be dangerous for them - now she has given me some ranges to watch for but suggested it was actually this virus that would have shot his temp up.

Anyway pamol, rest and fluids are the go and he should start to be feeling better.

Have today taken a leaf out of PM's book and put C down in his cot for his lunch sleep and other than a quick grizzle when his dummy fell out he has been asleep for 1.5hours. Just swaddled him and Safe T sleep'd him and covered him in blankets so hope this is a good start but will need to get a sleeping bag soon as he always kicks out of his blankets even when he is swaddled.

Keep warm ladies.

Sb. Its pretty chilly here in AKL, got the heater cranking, but the sun is shining and I'm probably just being a wuss.

Pretty good night.. I think C would have slept through the night had I not accidentaly walked into his bassinet @ 2am getting up for the loo and woken him up. Oops.

Then at about 4am, I heard him muffled grizzly and thought WTH? Turned the nightlight on and poor boy had managed to unswaddle himself completely and had the swaddle over his face and he couldn't shift it. Scared the crap out of me! It was just a square cotton wrap too cause he spewed on the miracle blanket and its in the wash.

Got him down for his morning nap really early today (just after 8, normally down closer to 9) in a "wrap me up" swaddle I got given for my baby shower. At least he wont be able to wriggle out of that one, time to invest in sleeping bags I think. Good thing he is going in a cot soon!
I think she might be one of the last ones born in the group. I like this forum too, a lot less catty then some coffee groups but do have to say as this is number two for me I did not go to antenatal classes and don't have a coffee group this time around. My first one isnt going anymore as everyone bar one other lady ended up moving away. I still catch up with her but she works full time so its not like the good old play date days.
Another friend had a baby in March and we are both in the market (haha this is going to sound silly!) for some new friends so we are going to start going to some community based coffee groups soon, like at the local Plunket etc. I would like to meet some other families to make it easier for DP & I to socialise together. At the moment it seems like most things we get invited too are kid free which isnt really ideal anymore. We want to be able to go out and have fun together as a family & the first step I think is having more friends in the area with families themselves :)

I've been finding brekfast really difficult so as of today have started having a Complan with fruit milkshake instead of worrying about cereal etc anymore. This way I can make it and then continue on doing what needs doing. Its quite fulling too, I had mine about 2 hours ago and Im still full.

I bought the spare room mattress into the lounge on saturday night - wish I did this 7 weeks ago!
So relaxing, I've slept in here everynight since. I bought Olivias cot mattress in as well so she's sleeping beside me on that. It might sound mad but its so much easier with Mr3 in the mornings, he will eat his brekkie and watch TV and I can keep an eye on him while snuggled into my duvet.
Fingers crossed I dont get any surprise visitors or I will just die! haha

Edit to ask if anyone else is haivng trouble going to sleep? I havent been able to fall asleep before 12pm for the last week nearly and its driving me insane and making me a little nutty

Edited by sweets - 28 May 2013 at 11:01am

All is fine and good. While we still have our unsettled moments, DD is a delightful baby who is just continuing to make us so happy and proud! no real dramas of late.

We are also embarking on the basket to cot transition. So far I'm just putting her to bed in the basket inside the cot. I want her to get used to napping on her own - I would just move the moses basket around the house during the day so she was always with me and all the household bustle. So will do that this week and then I think put her to bed in the cot proper over the weekend. Eeek. We are getting good night sleeps, from 8:30, 9ish til 4:30 or occassionally 5:30. I sometimes wish she'd sleep longer but then I tell myself to get a grip, she's only a baby and I'm feeling fine so it's all good for now.

JJ, don't worry about the poo - we've been 14 days between them and all the Drs say it's absolutely fine for a breastfed bubba. We're now at about once a week... Means the farts are pretty powerful though haha!

Shakeybaby, well done on getting support, I think you're amazing! Hope everything comes together for you soon and you feel better.

Well it's freezing here so hope you're all warm and toasty and have a great day.

I'm hoping my wee lady does that at 3 months! At the moment shes up at 1am (from 7pm), then 4-5 am. not too bad I don't think. I've tried putting her to bed later but she wakes at 1 every time so i thought the longer sleep the better and hoepfully it'll extend on its own.

as for the cot- we just popped a nice thick blanket folded a few times on top of the cot matress under the fitted sheet. worked a treat she's been sleeping in there for a few weeks now and no hiccups. you might be surprised that they don't really notice too much!
one thing i did do was i put my lady down facing the wall and wedged her because we sleep her on her side, so she couldn't look around the room, because in the bassinet there was walls so youc ouldn't really look anyway.
GOOD LUCK!

Does anyone know anything about starting immunisations late? My wee boy is 10 weeks tomorrow, crazy!

Oh WB. Hope Coen is better today! Caleb had a temp of 38 yesterday too for no apparent reason, he was grizzly all day but I put that down to his night sleep being shorter than usual. He did 10pm till 5 that night then was up again at 630 so not a huge amount of sleep overall but a solid block. Did the same again last night so hoping I can start stretching him out even further.

Yay for Coen graduating to the cot too. C is almost out of his bassinet, so I've taken the extra mattress out so now he has a little extra room but a harder mattress. I though about what SB said about the inner spring mattresses being hard so thought I could transition c from soft to hard mattress in his bassinet (I had a woollen mattress made for the bassist cause I didnt like the hard foam one it came with) so he is still in the bassinet with the foam mattress which hopefully means come cot time he will be OK with the firm mattress.
I've also had to start to wean him off swaddling cause the cheeky monkey busts out of every swaddle I do except the miracle blanket, but even then his feet are always out. He just can't get his arms out. So, sleeping bag time when we move.

Do you think he will notice the change of environment in a new house? Im hoping he is still to small to really notice much difference so it shouldn't be too bad, right?

I think I'll definitely have to put him in his cot when we move in three weeks. That is gonna be a stressful week I think, he is due for his 12 week jabs the day before. Eek.

Not nice in the least, but thankful LM didn't get it.

Had another Plunket visit today and he's grown 14oz in two weeks so is now 15lbs7oz and grew 2.5cm longer. I thought he had been growing as he's been hungrier of late.

This is a great group and I have loved being a part of it. It has been quiet the last week or so, but hopefully that doesn't continue. It's a great support network.

I have been feeling overwhelmed and am now on anti-depressents which'll be kicking in anytime now, so can't wait! So much of my stress is of my own making in my head, so once I'm more stable emotionally, I know I can get my brain right.

His dermatitis has flared up really badly so spoke to the Dr about this today again and we have a stronger steroid cream to try and have been told to use the weaker one on his face for 3-4days. It could be an allergy to something I am eating so am cutting out dairy and eggs for 2 weeks and also have bought some special laundry liquid especially for kids clothes so am hoping to get our wee smiley boy back.

To top it off solids seem to be working a treat at night as he slept from 8pm to 6am last night.

I have a tummy bug or yucky thing going on and was really not well at all last night and had really bad nausea too. Am living on toast, sprite and water today - am also wondering if it is because I went for a walk and also my first run too yesterday.

Anyway back on a healthy track from today and cutting out all the dairy will certainly ensure I eat healthier too - aww no more cheese, mayo, milk, yoghurt, cream, ice-cream :(

Edited by waterbaby - 27 May 2013 at 1:51pm

Since then he has been every 2-3 days 4 days max. It is completely normal for a breastfed baby, so depends how your babe is feeding. I also rung plunket line and they encouraged feeding, a warm bath, pumping / bicycle movements of the legs, and clockwise tummy massage may help. As long as there is lots of wet nappies and gas all should be fine, but you know your baby best!

At a certain age it is normal for poo habits to change, or so I've read. If you are concerned I would certainly try plunket line or your plunket nurse.

Edited by peppermint87 - 26 May 2013 at 6:37pm

I know that 24 hours isn't anything to worry about and would say if nothing come day 3 then chat to your GP. For peace of mind give plunketline a call JJ.

Well last night C had his bottle as normal and then I gave him a small amount of solids, probably no more than 1-1.5tsp, and he slept soundly until 4.45am for a feed so this certainly appears to have been the right hunch that he was waking because he was hungry so I will go again tonight and see how we go and if it continues to work then I will stick with it.

Oh JJ how was the water with LJ, did you just use a bottle - cute :)

Decided this morning to start a we amount of solids to see if it will help. Yes I know it is early but am trusting my mum instincts that he needs food - he wasn't 100% sure about the concept of the spoon but did pretty well and only had about 1/2-1 tsp but seemed to like what he was tasting - apple & mango just happened to be what was in the cupboard so will get some farex and maybe some plain apple and hope this might help - so I suppose it is a wee milestone for us, although not rolling :)

I used to try to force the 2nd breast but would wake him more and we would end up in tension so both not happy and generally would still wake at the normal time too.

JJ I would say don't dream feed and keep doing what you are doing and let the midnight go as normal and then extend in it's own time. We got to 8-9weeks and suddenly the sleep time increased all on its own so give it time & maybe try the dummy and see how it goes - can sometimes take C 20mins of dummying to get back to sleep but he has slowly just crept past the waking points of 1am & 2am and generally now is between 3.30-4.30 that I dummy for a wake up at 5.30ish.

I guess just decide on what are "must do"s, like dishes, or washing or whatever is most important, and do that during the morning nap and then if anything else gets done it's just a bonus. Well thats what we do anyway. And save the "big jobs" like the bathroom and vacuuming for the weekend when there's someone to hold the baby!

Its where you go in say fifteen minutes before baby would normally wake and gently rouse them slightly, either by flicking the light on and off or by touching baby so that they move. It should break the cycle and baby should continue sleeping. Do this for 5 days and the habit is broken. It didn't work for AJ, but I've heard it can be quite good.

It seems that the little lady is waking at midnight out of habit now, rather than hunger, as she used to sleep til about 2am. But then again their sleep habits are pretty eratic. I am worried about trying the dream feed cause I think she will just wake up at 12 anyway.

Also- After about 5 minutes on 1 side she just goes back to sleep- do you guys make them take the other breast to they're totally full? or just put them back to bed to try get them to last with little food? thoughts?

Edited by jessicajanea - 20 May 2013 at 4:47pm

We offered / tried just two feeds per day. One thing I noticed is wee man is so much more receptive when the milk is nice and warm.

SB I agree with what WB said. We also agreed on what were 'necessities' for me to get through in a day I.e dishes done, washing off the line so I don't get overwhelmed.

I've made it a rule that I don't do housework when she's awake that's our precious time together they just grow far to quickly.

I'm having problems with Harper taking bottle took it once & now refuses it not to sure what to do just wanted to be able to use it as an option so I could go to the gym once a week. Any tips....
