Minny, we tried a nipple shield, but Marty actually does better latching straight on.  He's been too tired to suck much since yesterday afternoon, so have just been doing gravity feeds - he is completely alert and awake at different times to his feeds.  

Yeah, the thought of other people being around Marty freaks me out - random people coming too close to our bubs just isn't on!  Even family do completely the wrong thing sometimes, when they just don't think (like my MIL completely over stimulating Marty the other day, waving his arms around, briskly rubbing his foot and tummy - needless to say he was completely wound up, spilt his feed, had a sky-high heart rate and was crotchety for the rest of the day) - I was hoping Hubby would say something to her for me (though it would be nicer coming from him), but looks like it will be all up to me next time to intervene adn explain to a woman whos raised 4 kids how to handle and not handle Marty - she is NOT going to take it well, but thems the breaks huh!

Marty had a massive poonami today while I was cuddling him - you can only laugh!

So I've had an interesting week or so - Marty's tantrums got so bad for him (meant that he wasn't breathing properly and kept dropping his sats), other babies (as he kept waking them all up) and the nurses (they just didn't have the time to be able to cuddle him as much as he wanted when Iwasn't there)  that he was put into the isolation room so I could stay with him!  Lots less stimulation in there (that was one of the main problems when he was in witht he other babies), so he's way more settled and is doing so well!  He's now just on low flow oxygen, breast, bottle and gravity feeding, no more pumps!  It feels like we are finally on the down hill slope towards Marty coming home =-)

Great to hear Isaac is finally heading home too Minny - you must be stoked!

Anyway, welcome to kiwigal and kate =-)  Kiwigal, my boy was born at 27 + 2 and was 955g, he is now 2284g =-)  he has just grown his first wee fat rolls on his arms!  

 

I am mum of two premmies they were both born at 35 5d DS was 4lbs 12 ozs IUGR and spent about 48 hours in NICU and DD was 6lbs 2ozs and no complications. When DS was born my closest friend had her daughter born 14 weeks early and was 466 grams and 5 days older than my son.

 

My kids are nearly 10 and 5

Marty passed 1800g today, and is sitting at 1822!  So proud of my wee trooper, he's come so far!

I spent all day at the hospital with Marty today, was just awesome.

Hmm, can you Skype multiple people at once?  We could be onto something with this virtual coffee thing, virtual coffee groups could be the answer for many isolated preemie mums!

How is everyone today?

I had the most amazing day with Marty today, was with him literally all day, cuddling from 12-430 - a record for Marty, he did so well! I only left after his 6pm cares - he'd obviously had enough of me by then, he was getting grisly and when I went to smooch him on the cheek he pushed me away!  Was very cute - a definite 'go away mum!'

How is everyone else tonight?  

We had the most amazing cuddle today, Marty slept the whole time, then woke up when cuddle time was over.  He was looking around when I dressed him, then we had a good 'chat' (as in me gooing at him) till he fell back asleep.  So in love!

I had a go at Hamish yesterday - he came home from visiting Marty on his own, and I was thinking he'd be excited/happy about seeing him in the cot for the first time.  Instead, he gushed over the puppy then took her for a walk.  When he got back he was talking all about her, what she did, expecting me to be all interested. It seemed like he was more interested in the damn puppy then our son!  He said its just that he doesn't get excited over the little things...  Its really hard to understand/remember sometimes that things are totally different for the dads then the us mums - I think there really is a different bond between us and the boys at this stage.

Oh Minny, appariently there is a statistically higher amount of boys born prems then girls - we were right =-)
