Topic: Brisbane/Sunshine Coast question Posted: 31 October 2007 at 8:26pm |
We are going for an aussie holiday next year and we had pretty much settled on going to the sunshine coast/brissie.
However, the in laws have just been and said there wasn't much to do and also that everything was expensive. Yet my parents who had their first holiday in 20 odd years last year went to this area and absolutely loved it and they wouldn't go anywhere thats expensive and they recommended for us to go there..
Sooo we are wanting some more insight.. from people who have been there and are more of our age..
What is there to do? And is it expensive or reasonable?

I haven't been to Brisbane or the SC with kids, but I have done the Gold Coast twice with Maya and once with Maya plus gremlins and it was pretty reasonable, we stayed in an apartment rather than a hotel/motel which meant that we had cooking facilities etc. so that kept meal costs down, and worked out cheaper overall, and flying into Coolangatta rather than Brisbane is cheaper.
Sorry that probably doesn't help at all, but MTCW!

Stacey we have been there every year for the last four years. I will come back and reply properly tomorrow when I have a bit more time! I totally recommend the Gold Coast and you can do it on a really tight budget!! We absolutely love it! We are planning to go there next year around July/August!

Hi Stacey... I havent been there in a few years, but used to live in Brissy and had holidays up the sunshine coast and loved it. We are presently looking at going there again in May next year... I have found HEAPS of cheap nice accommodation in the Sunshine Coast... and Im sure there should be nice stuff in Brissy and Gold Coast. What time of year are you thinking of going?

Gold Coast is probably the best place to go for a 'family' holiday as more to see and do; it can get quite pricey but if you go 'off season' it works out to be a really cheap and worthwhile holiday. Sunshine coast is nice, but more for relaxing on beaches and such, not actually much to do (apart from Australia Zoo). And there are beach areas outside of Surfers (so that you're no on the main drag but still really close to everything) that are a little bit more quiet like main beach, broadbeach and burleigh heads. And I highly recommend all the theme parks
Brissie is also really nice, but no beaches (only a fake one in the middle of the city!) but probably not as much to see or do...

Sunshine Coast rocks! We always go stay in Noosa, it is so nice there and totally central! We want to take Maddie there asap.
You have heaps to do...you just need to know where to look! Aussie Zoo, Mooloolaba Aquarium (the seal show is so cool and you can get a seal smooch afterwards), Ginger Factory (cool train ride there), good shopping, head to Moorchydore for an excellent mall and the best cafes are there all along the "river" that runs through it. Eumundi markets are a must to go check out, they have the coolest things! And you can't go past Ettamogah Pub (fab fish and chips!) and Aussie World is right next door, it's an arcade style amusement park - Easter Show type thing. Almost forgot....the Big Pineapple, that has another ride and tour and does the coolest Sundae served in a half pineapple and cannot be eaten by one person alone, no way!
Sunshine Coast is not as amusement park orientated as the Gold Coast, but then with a baby you won't really be able to do that sort of thing. There is still tons though as you can see, you will need a rental car rather than busing but the driving over there is so easy and the highway's rock!
Sunshine Coast is slighty more expensive price wise with accommodation but it kinda evens out becuase you're not paying $70 per person to get in!
Hope that helps.

Thanks everyone! I had thought of the gold coast as well. But I'd rather do that once Daniel is older and will be able to enjoy it more. He will only be about 15 months when we go.

That's why I reakon Sunshine Coast would be better...there is a lot more you can do with him. IF you go to the theme parks on the Gold Coast there isn't much you could do, even in the kids areas.

I reckon that the Sunshine Coast is HEAPS cheaper accommodation wise and you can be cheeky and say whats the best price you can give me (and book when you get there) it is dearer in regards to the shops I reckon because there isnt the huge malls like there is in Brisbane and the Gold Coast.
How long are you thinking of going for?
You could always just book in half your holiday there on the Sunshine and if you really dont like it leave and go down the Coast because you can ALWAYS get accommodation there, and then if you really like the Sunshine Coast you could just extend how many nights you wanted to stay.
If that makes sense?

Half and half would be a good idea...then at least you could do Currumbin Zoo and Seaworld and of course Pacific Fair! (corr that place rocks!) and Harbour Town of course!

I agree with Paws. Sunshine Coast is brilliant and so much more small child orientated! We go there at least twice a year.
There is always sunshine plaza...which I have to say is as good as pac fair.
I second what Emma said about getting an apartment as then you can have breakfast etc at home and def helps keep the coast down slightly esp if bubs is playing up and you need to stay home for dinner etc.
I have found rates2go, great for booking cheap accomodation.
Also def need a rental car as so much easier to get around esp as attractions are quite spread out, but the driving is really easy...even I managed it!

WE stayed in Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast (where Underwater World is) and absoloutly loved it!!! Very relaxing lots to see and do. We also hired a car and found that great 'cos Mooloolaba was so central (and a bit cheaper than say Noosa) it didn't take long to get anywhere. I'm hanging out to go back!!

My SIL and BIL live on the Sunshine Coast, about 10 minutes drive from Australia Zoo. I haven't been there myself (actually, I've never been out of the country and don't have a passport!) but my husband has a few times to visit his sister, just not since we were married. I'll send him to this thread when he gets home (he's zerubbabel) to see if there's anything he can add
Oh, and my aunt and uncle live in Brisbane, so last year (about this time of year) my Mum and Dad, and siblings (who were 13 and 15) went over for a holiday. They found heaps to do in Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast, although lots of what my Mum and sister enjoyed revolved around the markets and shopping!

Have we talked about this?? If not we'll talk as mum and dad are living up in the sunshine coast area and they'll have some tips and some ideas of where to go. We (me and the boys) are going over next year sometime and we are staying with them. We are def going to Oz Zoo (we took Andrew when he was 3 months old) and we may take a trip down to Dreamworld.

Hey kebakat, DF and I are living in Bissy at the moment and we LOVE the Sunshine coast!!! Noosa, Mooloolaba, Maroochoodore. Just beautiful up there and its not as commercialised as the Gold Coast. We've stayed in a Motel there for around $120 pn in January (peak season). Just depends on what type of accommodation you want though, it can get expensive, but I reckon the Gold Coast is more expensive for accommodation.
We flew my 5 year old niece over from CHCH and we took her to Aussie Zoo (just brilliant for all aged children), the beaches, underwater world and other places on the sunshine coast. We also took her to Movie World (Gold Coast) and she loved it, but if she was younger she wouldnt have been able to do the rides etc.
The Gold Coast is good for older children, then you can take them to the theme parks and to the shopping centres etc.
I reckon go to both if your not sure. The sunshine coast is about 130kms (1.5 hours drive) from Brissy and Gold Coast is about 70kms (1 hour drive) from Brissy. The roads are straight so no twisty roads like NZ.

I agree with Jess - he will be 15 months when you get there so aatho theme park rides arent really an option he will love the animals at dreamworld and seaworld.
Also make sure you stay at somewhere like K club or turtle beach etc where they have kid friendly pools and babysitting options so you can go out...and the babysitters are experienced as people who stay there do so cause they have kids....
I think the sunshine coast would be boring....and dont imagine you will be able to go in ocean much - the blue bottles etc are mega in the coast - so pools at hotels and waterparks are the best.
Brissie has some good shopping...and you could always aim to go up to the aussie zoo where the irwins are. He would love that.
There are better deals on internet search for accomod than anywhere else...we normally pay about $500 - $800 for a nice hotel on the coast etc for 7-9 days and that is mid range.
shopping - i always go pacific fair....awesome shopping! as is harbour etc where there ar factory shops.

I love both surfers and noosa, and the bits in between.
The only things I would add are:
- it's really easy to get a rental car from brisbane airport (or nearby) and drive in either direction;
- check out IKEA while you're there (grt cheap homeware store/warehouse just south of bne airport)
- grt golf if either of you are into that
- from noosa you can go on a day trip up to fraser island. The 4wds take you along the beach (its a highway) and up to the island which is a huge sand dune, with a fresh water lake in the middle.
.. but watch the dingos!!
