Topic: Midwives in Lower Hutt,Wellington Posted: 04 February 2009 at 3:09pm |
Hi ladies,
I was wondering if you could recommend a midwife in the lower hutt area. I would prefer to go with someone on recommendations, any positive feedback would be great.
I received a list from my doc but don't know where to start!
I have read on another forum that Lesley Gummer is very good, has anyone else had her as their midwife.
Many thanks.

I have just got my midwife so havent met her yet but she seems nice enough. Her name is Alison Wightman.
I have had two people really recommend Catriona Pratt as well.
Lesley Gunner i have no idea but all three of these women work for the same company "birth in focus" and their number are here http://www.wellingtonmidwives.com/

I can't recommend a midwife, but I can recommend *not* going to BirthWorks! I'm sure they're not all bad, but when I first found out I was pregnant I rang them, and one of them (can't remember which one sorry) rang me back and said I'm not pregnant yet if I'm due mid march and to ring back when I am pregnant! This was in July last year and I figured that if they couldn't count that 8 months from July was March then they probably didn't know what they were doing, hehe.
Now I've written it down it doesn't sound that bad, but I was so nervous after having had a m/c before and didn't really need to be told I wasn't pregnant! (and of course I was, only 5 and a bit weeks to go till my due date on March 13th!)
Anyway, there's my 2 cents

Rachel, I think you're right about Birthworks, my sister was with them and her midwife dumped her after a very small complication and a short stay in hospital so she had to rely on the lovely midwives at the hospital. Not too horrible but for me who is nervous after miscarrying in December I would prefer to go with someone more confident. So personally I will not be going with Birthworks.
Thanks to everyone else for their reccomendations.

if you cant find one you'll end up with the lower hutt hosp midwife team and i just wanted to say they are amazing!!! i had an OB so no MW till after i delivered. Mack lost too much weight in the early days and they came around every day for over a week, rang in the evening and still come every 3 days to keep an eye on him. they are awesome so if you dont find one they are great.

I can understand the bad feedback from birthworks.
I rang with my first child being about 6 weeks i think.
I was told i dont need to be seen for ages and to ring back later. It really got me upset as being a first pregnancy i didnt know what was normal or not.
After another month i still hadnt found a midwife! Apparntly Midwifes dont know how to return phone calls.
I ended up going back through Birthworks but got a different lady to the first one who rang me.
I had a midwife called Sharon Graham she was lovely.
My friend also has Bridget from Birthworks also.
