Well definitely have to have continuous monitoring. Was hoping intermittent would be ok with my midwife, but no luck. Extra no-luck because ChCh womens doesn't have any kind of wireless monitors, let alone a waterproof one (though I guess Nelson does? How unfair is that?!). I'm a bit wary of the internal scalp one (though had it before), though my midwife said that doesn't necessarily put a time limit on things (because of broken waters and infection), and might also give me a little more freedom in terms of movement. Good news is I can hang out at home first though.

Suggestions for making a tethered and unmedicated labour more bearable? So far I've come up with maybe TENS and maybe a heating pad since I won't be able to shower.

hehe Homebirth?
Otherwise heat? swiss ball? I found that I liked kneeling leaning over the bed or the head of the bed when I had the wires on (and even though I couldnt move far, I used the 1.5m I had, and did not lye on that bed...)
Does your MW do accupuncture? or accupressure, there is a good debra betts PDF around that has the accupressure points on it.
Music? the comb? I would def be going in as late as possible if I knew I was going to be hooked up (also go to the toilet as much as you can (then you get 10 mins off )

I've decided the bed is there for them, not for me, so I'll be monitored but either on mats on the floor or on my ball. People are going to have to bend down but they aren't the ones in labour.

I looked into a homebirth when I was looking for a MW but had such problems finding anyone to take a VBAC (and then the thought of arguing my husband around...), let alone a HBAC, so I gave up on that.

I'll consider the bed if they can lower it to the point I can get off and on easily. I'm short and before I basically needed a stepstool (and it was wobbly and I felt really precarious). Was much worse after the CS as I couldn't lift the baby out of the bassinet from the bed, so had to climb off, get baby, climb back on...

Did you realize that chch woman's do not have a continual monitoring policy ( last mw told me) the policy for vbac is to have regular monitoring. I really wish I had gone for a different mw when I was trying for a vbac as I had one reccommended to me that did not believe it nesacary to continual monitor, just intermittent. Is there a chance that you could swap?

I didn't know they don't have a continual monitoring policy. I asked my MW about monitoring yesterday and if we could do an every 15/10 minutes type thing, but she said no, that it really had to be continuous. I mean I know why, because fetal bradycardia is an indicator of rupture, but if I had scar pain I'd certainly consent to continuous. I'll bring that up again sometimes after 30 weeks. Maybe I can get some info from the OBs on that at my appointment?

I'm hesitant to swap as I picked my MW for several reasons and VBAC was only one of them. I had such a ridiculous time finding a MW when I was 4 weeks pregnant, hate to think of what it would be like now.

My MW is at least happy for me to hang out at home for some time and I think I'll push how long I hang out past what I did last time (because I was only 3-4cm when I arrived before, I just started feeling I might want some gas or the pool, but as I'm not getting either of those I'll wait longer). I need a fair amount of postpartum support (baby will likely need to be referred to specialists and have surgery for a difficult tongue tie- another thing I have to argue my case for) which is more important than the VBAC and found that really hard to come by last time (got brushed off by everyone, MW, GP, Plunket etc).

I had my OB consult yesterday, which went ok. She said I was a favourable case for a VBAC and that baby is head down and LOL However she did say they would want me to go to hospital as soon as I have any labour signs, I don't really have any intention of doing this if everything is going well. Also bought up continual monitoring which they recommend but it is my choice, I really want to have an active birth so hopeful I can avoid this. I hate that having had one CS means I can't have the birth I want this time around.

Finally got a chance to get onto my laptop (I cant post from my i phone on the OB website?)... I had my wee man on 8th Feb and got my VBAC, I had a S&S at 1.30 on the 7th Feb at 39+3 and my MW said my cervix was well back and she didn't expect I'd be having my baby anytime soon. She did what she could and I left feeling a wee bit dissapointed. I had a few errands to run while my toddler was at preschool and felt a few wee pains, but just assumed that was from the S&S.

At 4.30 just as my partner walked in the door I got my first proper contraction, like my previous labour it all starts happening quite quickly with me, so I downloaded an app on my phone to time them as last time my partner was a bit useless at that job and found they were pretty regular and lasting 40-60 secs. shortly after 5 I phoned the MW she said she doubted it was labour just the body settling after the S&S and to give it an hour, we phoned MIL to come over and got my DD fed and ready for bed. I phoned the MW again just after 6, I knew it was definitely all go, hey I'd been here before (haha)... She said she'd come over and check, when she got here I was a good 3cm's and she suggested we make our way to the hospital where one of my other MW's would meet us just after 8.

On arrival at the hospital the contractions were progressing. They set me up in the birthing suite and got me sorted with some gas.. The MW came and did a check I think I was about 5-6cm at that stage, she said she'd do another check at 10.30/11, I'd been so insistent all along I didn't want continuous monitoring and here I was stuck on the bed, she said I could move around but I was so sore at this stage I didn't want to move, I did make the effort and had a walk around, loo stop etc and then climbed back on the bed on all fours leaning over the back of the bed. I asked to be checked again just after 10 and she decided to then break my waters, I immediately went to 8cm and from then on it was all go... The contractions were now coming thick and fast and before I knew it I wanted to push, but when I did push my CS scar really hurt, the OB came in and was happy with baby's HB and comfortable that I was at no risk of having a uterine rupture so decided to use the ventouse just to help me to push the baby out. I didn't need to push for too long before we had the head out and then the shoulders etc... My wee George William had arrived at 12.08am  weighing 3.420kg... I did have a 2nd degree tear so was stitched and within a few hours was off to Burwood Maternity Hosp where I stayed for 2 nights. Unfortunately George ended up in hosp at 5 days old, but he is now 5.5 months and almost 8kg and just awesome!

Hi, I am 19 weeks pg and hoping for a VBAC. I'm looking for any others planning a VBAC to chat to! Thought I'd try and keep this thread going seeing as there is so much awesome info on it, rather than starting a new one.

My story in brief:
My DD 2.5y was born by emergency c-sect when she stopped moving and became distressed at 38 weeks. She was born severely anaemic and it's a mystery as to how it happened, most likely scenario is a slow foetal-maternal haemorrhage (ie bleeding thru the placenta into my circulation). She spent 5 weeks in NICU and was lucky to survive, but is now a happy healthy little girl!

So we are seeing an obstetrician this time for extra tests and monitoring....I had my first appt with her last week and came away feeling overwhelmed and intimidated! She is extremely risk averse and pressed strongly for an elective CS at 38 weeks EVEN if the tests all come back fine! (She was the one who delivered DD and I think feels an extra duty of care because DD was so sick and it was completely missed).

When I told her I wanted a VBAC she told me all the risks etc then said if I was 'allowed' to labour then my labour would have to be textbook and not go on too long, otherwise she'll recommend emergency CS. Sheesh, no pressure!

Since then I have decided that I need to get informed and get into a positive, empowered mindset. I been doing lots of reading including this thread which I have found very helpful.

I am also interviewing a new midwife this week who is apparently pro-VBAC (so was the midwife we initially chose but now she has to go overseas for family reasons when I am due). So fingers crossed she works out!

OK, I'll leave it there and see if anyone wants to chat!

Thanks Emmi
I'm in Lower Hutt. Was planning a home birth for DD until things went pear-shaped....but I'm feeling OK about being in Hutt hospital this time....as long as we can negotiate for the things that are important to us!

Whats the name of the MW your interviewing?
Judy Slankard from Birthworks is ment to be awesome (I have a friend who used her), or I think even a couple of the MWs from the Wgtn homebirth collective take lower hutters (Meredith from memory (I had Pauline from that group) (Both them are HB MWs but also do hosp births too) (Just in case you dont click with the one your interviewing, hopefully you will ave a couple of options)

hi fadeless and thanks

I finally met a prospective MW after a few false starts....she is lovely and we are mostly on the same page....but she's very keen on continuous monitoring. I wish I could find someone a little more radical - but it's hard to find the perfect MW when you're already 20 weeks pg! I'm not sure what to do - keep looking or go with someone who ticks most of my boxes.

The thing is, I wouldn't be surprised if I get nervous about what happened last time and actually want a lot of CTG monitoring when it comes down to it! But I don't want to have to commit to it now iykwim?

On another note does anyone know how I can find out the VBAC success rate at my local hospital (Hutt)? Is it just a matter of writing and asking them?

Its in a MOH doc somewhere, I would need some time to find it, if you looked through their maternal docs you should be ablet o find it somewhere
might be just c section rates though?
