wash your meat?

Sorry stole this question from the IOL Forum in SA. And now totally curious. If you do wash meat what kind of meat do you wash before cooking?

Sorry but this is intriguing me a bit now. Promise to answer this question myself in a while.

Okay you guys might be totally surprise. But let me answer the question first myself.

I never really washed meat. I might wash chicken if it is fresh pieces and there is a bit of feather still on it then I will pluck and might give it a rinse.

Now onto the topic of the meat washing. I was surprise to find out when people posted about rinsing meat off then patting it dry and doing it again.

Some of the reasons where they do wash the extra blood off ect.

Other reasons. Be warned it might get gross so dont read if you are squeemish:

They say how do you know where those peoples hands were when they were busy packing and handling the meat ect.

Now first of all I dont wash as it never occured to me as such. Plus if you fry it with a bit of oil or use any kind of oil near it wont it just splatter oil up which makes it dangerous?

Now for the real freaky part some of them even wash their mince meat? I kid you not. That is just totally shocking to me.

Glad I am not the only supposedly dirty bugger.

in New Zealand our food handling standrads are pretty high - not to say that they are always obeyed though! I feel confident that the butchers cutting my meat are pretty hygenic though. I hope this doesn't sound offensive, but is that not the case in SA?

I agree Lizzle, I have never washed meat either at home or in a commercial enviroment. (except some offal - like chicken livers before frying for pate etc). Our standards are really high and if it was grotty they wouldn't be allowed to operate anymore.

Makes you think - do these people go out for dinner - cause if they do you could add another few sets of hands onto the food they are eating as well. Even packet foods can/have been handled. I think people can be a little over paranoid these days.

Okay so maybe I am just a bit paranoid, but I always wash my chicken breasts or whole chickens for roasting...not sure why really, something I was told once upon a time I expect. Dont wash really well or anything like that, just run it under the tap and then dry with handy towel. I dont wash anything else, but then I figure that the heat will detroy any germs anyway.

Only corned beef I wash. I do know that they people cutting our meat wear gloves as they are the special metal gloves that protect your hands from the knives. However I wouldn't know how often they get cleaned.

That's what I figured too. If the people cutting/packing it have dirty hands the heat of cooking is going to kill off whatever germs have survived the chillers, I hope!

That's weird Um is it unusual to presume that bought meat is 'clean' at time of purchase?? And washing blood off, c'mon it's got that inside!!

Anyway I think freezing and then cooking properly (ie high heat) would get rid of any bacteria?

I rinse out the cavity of a chicken before I roast it, get rid of any of the blood that sometimes sits - esp for one that has been previously frozen.

I don't wash raw meat, and I'm not bothered about handling it either, I have seen people cut up raw chicken with a knife and fork.

Depends where you get the meat i reckon. If it's from a butcher, most butchers use disposable gloves and the meat is fairly 'clean' even though it gets messy.

I'm sure that there is some 'scaremongering' about the meat industry and some people can get paranoid about things, but i feel that paranoia can cripple you from enjoying life.

So in answer; no I dont wash most meat. I think 280 F is plenty hot enough to kill off most germs. And like fluery, I'd wash the chicken cavity, but not because of the blood. Thats about it for me.

So do most supermarkets, Target and Fair Go would have a field day if they didn't.
Its the cooking process that kills off any potential bacteria.
How on earth would you wash mince!! and why bother.

I've yet to get sick from my own cooking, its usually dodge chinese or poorly cooked restaurant food you need to watch out for.

What country do you live in Chovynz? We cook in C in NZ.

i used to be a meatpacker at good ol pac n save and we always wore gloves and had to wash our hands between different types of meats and then sanitise them.
i can't speak for the people that came in contact with it before it got to the supermarket though.

i don't wash meat, can't see the point and have never even thought to.

um i dont wash meat but we used to occasionally when i waitressed in restaurants...(yes some very fine dining ones too!!)

look away now....

if people sent meat back cause it wasnt cooked properly the chefs washed sauces etc off it and then threw it in the pan...and re sauced it....very common (altho most admit to it!!!) - I now always cut my meat in half, or rip burgers in half etc if sending it back...that way i get a new one!

I've been inside beef and lamb processing plants, and can definitely vouch for the hygeine standards. As a visitor, we were given a good 20 minute hygiene induction, and everyone in the plant was obsessive about making sure the rules were followed. The gloves Becks mentioned, along with the knives etc, are washed probably 10 times in an 8 hour shift, and everyone and every tool is scrubbed in boiling water and soap before leaving or entering the meat rooms. I could go on, but rest assured, our meat processing plants are VERY hygienic places. (each one has multiple independent MAF inspectors, and the consequences of breaking any rules are very severe).
Hope that puts some minds at ease!
