DH had a review at work today (as part of his probation terms) and they have asked him to come back tomorrow, with me Kinda as a support thing but mostly to keep me in the loop I think. Now I'm nervous and have butterflies! It's almost as bad as going for an interview!

Well all I can think is that when they are going to say bad news, they ask if you want a support person ie lawyer/spouse. DH said he doesn't really feel that he needs support but it would be good to have me there so I know what's going on too.

Oh ok, I hope it is not bad news,
I don't reckon there should be probationary periods anymore, what's happened to just good old plane managing people, and if they are not performing to how they are expected to, then they need to be told/shown/trained etc... sorry vent over just my dh got sucked in not long ago and was promised a job then was layed off for no reason, well they would not provide one.

they are required to offer someone to have a support person there and offer the opportunity for a spouse, lawyer, friend etc to attend for any disciplinary meetings
if it is one and he wants to continue in the job ask for mediation....they have to go through that process and you asking BEFORE they fire him has to be given....if that is what is happening...altho i truly hope not!

Hi guys, thanks for thinking of us. The meeting was at 10am and sadly, it was the news we were dreading. But.... they've been really nice about it all. And then we went out for morning tea (and debriefing) together so he could collect his thoughts before getting back to work. Here's the gist:
DH has been working there for 3 months on probation (due to expire on 14 Sept). His job is "Conference and Publications Assistant" but it is actually a high-admin job and DH is qualified in the area of graphic design. Also they are a very busy, small business and were wanting someone with a couple of years' experience. (DH is not long out of UCOL/polytech). So the job doesn't exactly fit him and that has become clear in the last 6 weeks or so.
So the first thing they did was to push him to see what he was capable of. And they say he did really well and they are impressed with his good attitude through that process. Then they (the bosses) had lengthy discussions about whether they could utilise his design/creative skills by giving him a different role in the company. Unfortunately they are too small to be able to offer that at the moment. There wouldn't be enough work to create a position.
So what they have decided to do is to extend his working days to the end of September, send him to a careers counsellor (if he agrees, but he will) and use that as a springboard to find him another job, elsewhere. They said he is welcome to see the careers counsellor (it sounds like they will get in touch with a couple of good report and let him choose) in work time, and same for job interviews.
If they find a replacement in time, they would be keen for him to be part of that person's integration into the company, but if he finds a job before then he's free to go. And if he finds a job before the end of September they are happy for him to take that position up on an asap basis, as a lot of places ask for these days. They also said they want to help him get a job by giving good references etc, they really like him but they would like to see him in a creative job instead of administrative. The CEO said she would be amazed if he hadn't got a job by the end of September.
So all in all, I think it was a pretty positive meeting. DH's boss encouraged him to think of this job as a stepping stone, not as a failure. It's fair to say that DH is disappointed and he's really going to miss the people there too, but I think if they had offered to give him the full contract (until mid-winter 2008), he would have felt a bit trapped.
So, a new season for us (freaky but exciting!) and to his bosses!

it sounds like they have been upfront about it all with you both, which not a lot of employers would do. it sucks it isnt the best news (afterall, a steady income is the best news) but the steps they are putting in place sound so positive, i am sure chovy will have a fantastic job offer before long.
good luck with the next 6 weeks to you both.

Hey guys (dodgy thread by the way - disappearing and reappearing like that! I thought I was going mad! um ... mad-er )
I'm really glad that chovy's work have handled things well for you both, though I imagine it's really disappointing. The only thing I would say is - chovy, stay positive that there is something much better for you out there, which is not going to be so demanding, because it will be what you do. It will have the benefit of allowing you more time with T and the girls, and it will be better quality time because you will not be so stretched/stressed/pressured/tired.
All the very best with the job hunt - I hope it all works out really well!!

I think its sounds like everyone (them and you guys) have handled it really well. Its obviously disapointing, but good to stay positive and think of it as a stepping stone to something better.
Am sure that the perfect role is out there somewhere for you!!

Ginger you're right on the button there (and not just about the thread being dodgy lol). DH has been trying so hard to fill the rather demanding role he has, and he's been working 8.30 - 6.00 or sometimes later, with not much of a break at lunch either. So I've told him hey now you can enjoy working there without pushing yourself so much (but not un-working either), work 8.30-5.30 and actually come home for dinner and see his kids before they get tucked in at night (which is hit and miss at the moment, and something he's been frustrated about).

Looks like they handled the sitution much better than alot of places would!
I am sure the right thing will come along and be bigger and better for Chovy! Good luck with everything!

So after all of that, I didn't even reply . Anyways, what I was trying to say before OHbaby! rudely interrupted me was that it sounds like Nat's employers are really impressed with him, otherwise they wouldn't be investing so much time and effort into finding him a new more sutable job. And I get the feeling that Nat's been awful stressed lately, so this could work out to be a blessing if it means he can find something more suited to him, and that allows him a wee bit more time with the girls.

This has been the most of the stress Emma. Even though he now needs to look for another job, in some ways I think he is feeling a bit relieved that he no longer has to try to fit into this job.

its awful when they can't fit their work load into the hours they are paid for. DH will be happy he will get to come home to you and the girls at a decent hour.
Although my Dh is in IT and thats the way of the jobs for most. He has just started a new job closer to home and not so demanding so he will see rhyley before he goes to bed as alot of nights he wasn't.
Good luck on the job front and at least now he can concentrate on getting a job he wants and suits him better.

Wow what awesome bosses. sorry it's not better news but it sounds like they are being really positive about his time at the company. It just means that there is something out there which is the right job for all of you and this role just wasn't it. I'm a great believer in things happening the way they are meant to be, that there is a reason around the cornor
Take care, enjoy your extra time together with the girls

What a great way for them and for you two to handle such bad news! Like everyone else has said - sorry you've had to say 'bye' to that job security, and I'm sure that a more suitable job will appear in time. That can't have been a nice meeting to sit though, even though they were nice about it. How are you two feeling about it today? I'll be praying for a good job arriving soon
