DH and I had the best "date night" ever last night, and I just had to share, because things had been pretty boring between us for a while. We haven't done anything together, just for us, since I was pregnant almost two years ago, so this night out was looooooooong overdue. Here's how our 24 hours of couple time went...

We dropped Emma Rose off at the in-laws' to stay overnight, then headed into town and checked into a nice hotel. We then got glammed up and wandered into the city centre to see King Lear, for which we had amazing seats -- we were right next to the stage, where the actors literally walked in front of us to climb the steps onto the stage -- the girls' gowns actually brushed my toes, they were that close! Ian McKellen was within breathing distance!!!

The play was over at 11pm, and we hadn't eaten dinner, so we hoofed it up to K Road and got yakitori at Ken, one of our favourite restaurants from when we used to live in town. We were the only people there, so we ordered heaps of food and Kirin and proceeded to get a bit tipsy... and a bit fresh with each other under the table (ahem!). After midnight we staggered out and headed back to the hotel, where we soaked in the in-room spa bath and then fell into bed. This morning, we had room-service breakfast and a noon checkout, after which we meandered into Parnell (where we used to live) and checked out all our old haunts, visited our favourite art gallery, and had a leisurely lunch. By the time we realised we HAD to go pick up our daughter, it was 5pm.

It was definitely a much-needed reminder of why we love each other -- I think I fell in love with DH all over again, sitting in that yakitori bar at midnight, acting like teenagers. We never really had proper "dates" because we lived together right away after I moved here, but last night felt like recapturing some of the "early days" magic.

It's just so good to know that we can still do that -- go out, have fun, have things to talk about other than our child, be silly together, enjoy each other's company, be attracted to each other... It feels good remember why we got together in the first place. I just hope we don't leave the next one of those nights out for another two years...

What an awesome night, I am very jealous!

I went to King Lear on Friday night too, wasn't it great? Didn't have as good seats as you, but still loved it.

As we drove in to Auckland I was nostalgic for when DH and I used to live in the city as a young couple, sounds like you guys had a great time.

Awesome, Mazzy, I love how many literary mamas we have on OHbaby! I thought it was amazing -- well worth the $150 we paid for each of our seats! All up the evening cost us... well, let's just say it was about two months' worth of my salary from OHbaby! But absolutely perfect. I am so glad we finally did something for us.
