What kind of black tie event??
We went to one last year. I wore a dress from stax, but there were others there that wore skirts and only a couple had really nice pants. |

Its the Business Awards in Palmy, so I guess not to posh but the invite says black tie ! |

Ahhh, the black tie event I went to was the Contact Centre Awards in Palmy hehe..
If you don't want to wear a dress a skirt is the next best option I'd say. |

Yes I am thinking of going towards the skirt option, I don't own any dresses apart from my wedding dress! |

I only found out I was going to the awards on the day of them (helped organise it) so I ran over to Stax in my lunch hour to get a dress (they have tons of really nice ones and you can resell it on trademe) and then to number one shoes for some cheapo shoes to go with it lol.
If you wanted a dress you could hire one?? |

Generally the rule of thumb with Black Tie is either: an evening dress / cocktail dress, long skirt and v glitzy / dressy top or if you really want to wear pants you should try to find some that are really dressy (like womens tux pants) and team up with glitzy top. I have been to quite a lot of black tie (although not for a few years now) and I have always felt most comfortable in a dress (either long or short). If you have problems finding a suitable dress - you can always go for quite a plain black one and realyl glitz it up with glam jewellry or a really flashy shawl / scarf.

Black tie: Gentlemen in black tuxedo coat, trousers trimmed with satin ribbon along the outside of the legs, cummerband and bow tie. Ladies appear in ball gowns. Black tie optional: Same as above, except gentlemen have the option of wearing a regular suit with a tie (bow tie preferred) and ladies wear a cocktail gown or dinner dress. Long to full length skirts are preferred, short skirts are not recommended. There's always op-shopping to find something simple that can be dressed up - or you might get lucky and find something that will do nicely. I have a couple of black tie dress (size 14-16) if you want to borrow one. When someone to me says black tie I think ball dress. Also have a look in Save Mart on West street they have some great stuff in there. ------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived! |

I've had a couple of Black Tie Events in the last fews years....
Technically Black Tie means Black Tie....you wear formal wear. The disappointing thing is these days most people ignore it anyway and turn up in skirts and short dresses so you're probably fine to do the same.
