Subject: Blood in Poos

We spent most of the day in hospital with Joey today as this morning his poos were streaked with blood

The GP sent us to the hospital and on the way there Joey became unconcious for a good 30 minutes when we were stuck in traffic... I have never been more scared in my life Anyway, after a lot of blood tests etc. and waiting for ages we were sent home with a list of things to watch out for. He has been more like himself this afternoon, thank goodness, and his poos seem to be back to normal.

Just wondering if anyone else has had this happen and what it was as they don't seem to have any idea at the hospital??

scary stuff. Never happened to me but mum said when i was a baby i did lots of totally bloody poos. I think it was a gut problem, considering all the problems we have now had with our two.

I hope this is the end of it for you guys, and he stays well. If they cant find a cause they will prol say it was a virus.

Omg Ana that is scary!! I will be thinking of you guys and I hope they tell you what is happening with him.. doctors are annoying sometimes and they don't always give you the right advice or know what is wrong.

***BIG hugs to you and Joey***

Thanks for your support, it is really scary. I am really nervous and don't want to leave him out of my sight even though he seems pretty normal again now, the unconciousness really freaked me out the most, but the docs didn't even seem worried about that, hmmmm, weird. I check every nappy very thoroughly too but it looks quite good now... Fingers crossed...

If you dont get an answer from the docs just keep bugging them!

I am sure all is well and continue to be so.

I'm so glad to hear that Josef is ok Ana! It must have been so scary for you. But I agree with Roksana - if you don't get the answers you need, push harder. I had to with Maya, and I am so glad I did.

I am going to the hospital in a minute for a check up. Joey has still had tiny specks of blood in with his poos and was crying lots this morning and obviously uncomfortable. He has been vomiting a lot more today again too. Just milk or half digested milk or sometimes clear liquid. I really want to know what is wrong. i'll let you know how it goes at the check up, we should have some results from the tests they did on Tues.

Oh Ana Big hugs . Hope they give you some answers. He is just on BM? Maybe its a dairy or a gluten allergy i wonder if they have discussed with you about going on a dairy free diet? Sorry Just trying to wrack my brain for possibilities.

Test results were all clear. We were told basically they have no idea, it could be a dairy allergy but they don't want me to stop eating dairy yet as it is "to early in the piece". Joe seems ok, still tiny specks of blood but otherwise seems ok. I am supposed to call the paed in a week if nothing has improved and obviously call sooner if it worsens. Lets hope it just goes away!!! Thanks for your support guys.

Typical....do these docs know any thing?? Arrrgggg

I would be sooooo angry...and they would know it too. Blood just does not appear in poos...so there must be a reason, no matter how insignificant it might be...and they have no idea....Arrrggggg

Sorry....I just hate that some times...I had few bad experiences here with Docs......

Ana I hope that Josef gets better, he such a cutie and he look healthy so I am sure he will be just fine. Give him our .

And keep us updated!

He's ok. Had lots of blood again yesterday and he cries a lot these days I have decided to take dairy out of my diet and see how it go\es, I can't be botheres for the docs... I also think it could have something to do with peanuts, ate peanut butter for brekkie and at lunchtime his poos were bloody.. We'll see, just trial and error now! I will definitely call the paed on Thurs though!

Do you need a hand with eliminating dairy? there are one or 2 dairy free margerines you can get. Gingernuts are dairy free. Some breads are. Marshmellows are. Emma will probably be able to help you out too! going dairy free isnt that bad. After a couple of grocery shops you will get really good at reading the labels and seeing whats in food. I couldnt beleive that there is even milk products on the salt in chips.

BTW if it seems to work. (takes about 10 days to see any result). You might want to see your GP about calcium supplements.

Me too! Thanks guys!
Bloody nappy again this morning, I feel like crying every time! I dread changing him because I don't know what I will find and I get so excited if there is no blood and think it is getting better!!
I read that it takes 2 to 3 weeks for the dairy to realy get out of my system so I will have to stick to it at least that long!! I had a craving for a glass of milk yesterday!! I NEVER drink glasses of milk, just because I couldn't have it!! hee hee hee
I am off to the supermarket today to get some soy milk and some dairy free bread etc. At least I might lose some weight as I am like Wallace and Grommit when it comes to cheese, mmmmmmmmmmmm
I will definitely ring the paed on Thursday, I thought they would want to find out too Roksana, but they don't seem worried at the hospital at all. Good sign I suppose but for them it is something they see every day and don't realise that it is really scary for the parents!!

Hey Ana, I finally caught up with this thread...

Maya was allergic to dairy but no one told me to give up dairy when I was bf so she got sicker and sicker and eventually ended up in hospital where I was *encouraged* (read INSTRUCTED!) to give up BF and put her on prescription formula.

If I had only known that giving up dairy myself would have helped the problem I would never have stopped feeding (BTW she was 10 mths at this stage, her weight loss/funny poos etc. started around 16 weeks).

A dairy free diet is not that tough. Lite Licks icecream is dairy free, the only biscuits that are are Gingernuts as Maria has said. They do say on the label that they contain milk, but this is only a recent change due to stricter labelling laws, our dietician has assured us they are fine.

Most breads are dairy free apart from some of the really heavy Vogels, Burgen or grain breads, Olivani spread is dairy free (the only margarine that is), soy yoghurt, soy milk (rice milk tastes nicer tho), avoid soy cheese tho as it contains casein which is dairy protein.

Rice crackers (only the plain ones tho as some of the flavours contain milk in the flavouring), Chicken Crimpy Shapes crackers (the only Shapes that are dairy free, in an orange box).

Hope this gives you some ideas to start with. Avoiding peanuts is probably a good idea too as a high percentage of kids with dairy/gluten/egg allergy are also allergic to peanut.

Just a thought too, has he been tested for Coeliac (gluten intolerance). That can be a cause of bloody bowel motions, Maya was tested for it but thankfully negative.

PM me if you need any more ideas, this has been my life for 2 years so I am getting pretty good at it

Thank you so much!! I haven't had the doc. say to go dairy free as they seem to want to wait, for what I don't know. I am just doing it on my own initiative because I want to try anything to help my wee man. I am going to ring the Paed. today and tell her I want him tested for Dairy, Peanut and now I can add Gluten! I just hope it is something that can be fixed, but the symptoms are exactly like a food allergy going by what I have found on the internet. I really don't want to stop b/f and it will be the last thing I do, I guess if everything else has no affect.

Make sure they do the actual coeliac test tho, as you can be allergic to wheat (gluten) but not have coeliac and vice versa.
