Just wondering what any of your experiences with this were? I would love to apply but know that I probably won't return to my position after 14 weeks leave & I will have been replaced by then! Can I still get paid leave even if I resign at the end of it?

yep,i went on paid leave for bout 3 weeks before my maty leave kicked in then when i was due to return to work I handed in my resignation letter ( i had to give 3 weeks notice). It was rather easy for me cos i was only working at Burger King at that time (woo hoo cool job aye lol) and they keep hiring people pretty much year round.I did have a job to go bak to but decided id rather be at home.It is hard on one income but we get by and r comfortable.

yes! Take the leave as who knows what position you may be in at the end of the year. By law they have to keep your position available for the term of your leave ie a year. You get the money regardless of if you decide to return or not.

I agree with ya both - Some places leave your position "open" for a year - I took advantage of this, went back and was actually demoted
Take the parental leave YOU ARE ENTITLED TO IT! As long as you follow your work resigning protocols then do as you please

i took my leave - didnt want to go back, and got made redundant anyway...so long as you dont leave before hand or tell them you are leaving then it is fine. the other option if you dont earn much anyway is the parental tax credit.
heres a link and there is lots of other info to be found there too.

I am on 13 weeks paid parental leave at the moment (which is paid for by govt not your employer). I also have 6 months maternity leave (would have been 12 if I'd worked for an extra couple of weeks!) which means they have to keep my position (or something equivalent to it) for me for 6 months. I have to let them know whether I am returning or not at least 4 weeks before the 6 months is up. I am not returning to work (have moved away) but still opted to take maternity leave just in case. Whether you want to return to work or not, you are entitled to paid parental leave.

Ok. I will talk to my boss and hopefully he'll be kewl about it :) I know it's not that much money but geez, it's better than nothing! I'll be really bummed if he won't fill out the form because I've told him I'm 'probably' not returning. It'll just be a real slap in the face after everything I've done for the company y'no? & I mean they aren't the ones even paying me out! So we'll see what happens! Thanks for your advice guys

Dont' resign until your paid maternity leave finishes!!!

Yes definitely don't resign until your maternity leave has finished because once you resign then you lose any remaining paid parental leave. If you qualify for paid maternity leave then you should qualify for 52 weeks of time off and by law they have to keep a job for when you return, even if it's not the same position.
Also Gsmum, as of next year (31st March) the parental tax credit is no longer available because of the new "working for families" scheme.
I don't know if that would effect you or not Millybee but any money that you are entitled you should take. Even if you just put it into your baby's account for education or whatever.
Best of luck!

Oh I had a different problem. I joined my company Nov last year and having baby Oct....so not a full year here. They will give me 13 weeks leave but not 6 months! forget a year. However IRD changed their rule re how long you have to be in a company to get the paid parental leave from 1 year to 6 months...so I am going to get that cash.
Mind you it is 1/4 of what I get now...but some money is better than no money (specially when you have a mortgage).
