My in-laws are having a celebration on the weekend and have ordered a ham (on the bone). Do you think its ok to eat it??? Its not like it will be sitting in a deli tray at all???

i think its kinda up to you... Personally i am in the 'its not worth the risk' boat - but its up to you.

Perhaps ask your midwife just to get the all clear?

Cold meats are generally a no-no. Can you get them to heat your portion in the microwave until piping hot - that kills the bacteria and makes it ok

Yep I would recommend that you just heat your bits up in the oven or in a frypan. A friend of mine did that at Christmas

My MIL gave me cold ham on the bone for five days straight when we were staying with them. I said that I wanted to heat mine up and she got really offended, but then again, she is a psycho.

I have been eating ham off the bone, as it is much better than the processed stuff, that is what I thought!

its totally a personal thing:) I am paranoid but also i follow the food safety book and it says only steaming hot..but as with everything it's each to their own!!:) it's just on the off chance that there may be a problem as we are 20x more likely to get listeria and other things apaprently!:)

hmm its tricky. I have sort of a fairly relaxed attitude to food in the first place. As long as its fresh I tend to find it ok. I don't eat seafood at all anyway, but thats the only think I would really avoid.

Thanks for your advise/opinions. Is it just the listeria that is the danger or is it actually something in the ham?

Like you, I was quite relaxed about food as well. As long as something was fresh, I ate it. I avoided seafood though. I have said it before and nobody agreed with me, the chance of getting listeria from anything is sooooooo minimal and even if something isn't fresh, it doesn't mean that it carries the listeria bug. Ham is totally fine and ok, most people avoid it, and that's fine, it's your personal choice. Listeria comes from dairy products anyway, not meat. However, you can't tell people these things because nobody believes you.

the reason pregnant people are advised to avoid these foods is that you are more susceptible to picking up anything as their immunity is lowered and listeria (for example) can damage the baby as well as the mum. safe food handling practices can be observed in your own home but i certainly wouldnt eat a ham sandwich from a cafe.

sounds like someone has tried to force their opinion on you neeandsam! hehehe

I know ham can be dodgy if its not stored properly during hot summer etc, but Im thinking ill be ok to have a we be this weekend with a fresh ham. Ill see how I feel on the day. The thought of hot ham kind of grosses me out!

Ew hot ham! Only if it's been cooked in a frying pan or something, I so would not want to eat microwaved ham! Kind of defeats the purpose of a nice piece of ham really. I've been avoiding those sorts of foods mostly, but I know we'll have ham at Xmas and I'll be having some for sure!

Eehhh??

Listeria, rare as it may be, can also be found in any food that left chilled / in a deli counter / that isn't reheated to above 70degrees.

It's still up to personal choice though

Well I'd rather enjoy my pregnancy than worry incessantly over every little piece of food that goes into my mouth.

IMO each to their own. My friend got seriously and violently ill on hummus when 7 months pregnant and her baby was born perfect and on its due date!

I think its all about being sensible

I was pretty strict with myself re food, especially seeing I didn't find out I was pregnant until about 7 1/2 weeks and there was a *lot* of crp food and drink taken in in that time (my b'day, and then later I was on holiday)   I spoke with my 'SIL' about food towards the end and her comment was 'but that never happens to anyone' Literally 2 weeks later I found out about a collegues wife who got food poisioning and ended up with emergency CS 5 weeks early.
Not intended to scare you, but it was enough to confirm that I made the right choice for me.

Hmm.. I eat ALL the deli ham and everything. I do make a point of going first thing in the morning when I know they've got the fresh stuff in before buying it however. I dont worry about it, because my whole idea is, you cant stop your life and starve to death just because you are pregnant! Gosh, back in the old days people didnt even know about the dreaded listeria etc, and hardly anyone got it. So much hype around things like that these days that i'm not gonna be suprised if they'll have us all living in a little plastic bubble soon.

missangel- no offense...but there is a difference between not eating ham and starving to death;) its personal choice but i chose not to eat ham, sushi, and cooked meat form anywhere .. although in the maternity ward two days before induction i ate cold roast beef(you'd think it would be ok in a maternity ward' and two weeks later listeria was found in cold roast beef at a different hospital in a different part of the country...!

sheza- i ate ham sushi and everything else i missed out on in the first two days:) just things like buying potato salad or something form the deli i missed...and coleslaw(not that i can have that bfing anyway) 1

After 3 kids and eating deli meats in all pregnancies I can happily say that there is nothing wrong with any of my kids.

It's a definite personal decision.

I am fairly cautious about ham and deli stuff while pregnant, I figure even if it doesn't happen often it still happens and why take the risk, it's a simple thing not to eat and it's not like I don't have any other options for food!
I know my mum didn't have food restrictions during her pregnancy, but I also know that back then deli ham was considered a luxury and a lot of the 'not recommended' foods from now just weren't eaten that often back then. Also, I don't know what the stats were back then for infant mortality etc - even though I'm fine it could be the case that it was more common for issues to occur and now they know why. Just my personal take on it!

About a month ago here in Hamilton there was a massive Listeria outbreak from cold meat processed by Leonards. It went through the hospital as well as supermarkets. It's the first time I'd ever heard of that happening, and was so glad I didn't eat deli meat. It's not like I'd get a warning that listeria was going to hit that day!

I am hanging out for sushi, but it's kind of fun to look forward to that treat at the end.
