Briona's had excema (of the heat, not food, variety) since she was a baby and it peaked over her first summer and then settled right down. About that time she got malloscum and that is finally almost gone (yay!!). We had no real problems with the excema last summer and I presumed she had outgrown the most of it.
About a week ago her tummy (skin) was feeling a bit dry so I put on her emulsifying cream once or twice (of which we have used about 1/4 tub, so obviously not a huge excema prob here). But now she has excema on the back of her knees and she has never had it there before. Also she has a red rash on her cheeks which came up when the malloscum started clearing, I think it is excema but it might be malloscum-related somehow?
Any reason why the excema is suddenly flaring? Anything to do with the malloscum going?

I get excema and mine is flaring up at the moment too. Maybe just the change is seasons aggravates it?

Could it also be because her immune system is getting beaten up at the mo? Shes got flu and quite tired.

Micheal had severe excema when he was young and grew out of it at around five. Now all of a sudden at 10 it has come back up, but only only his legs so I'm guessing it's something to do with the season as arohanui said.

Braedon had it really bad as a baby, all over his body, he only gets it now behind his knees, joint area's is most common, unfortunately for us a steriod base cream is the only thing that settles it down, his seems to be there at the momemt as well.

Sam's has just arrived as well over the past week or so. She is pretty much covered in it from head to foot! Can I ask what you ladies use for it? We have been given a huge tub of Aquaeous cream by the doctors but it doesn't seem to take the redness out of the rash and Sam won't stop scratching

aqueous cream does a fat lot of nothing for Daniel. We use Johnsons soothing naturals cream and it does a lot better, stops him trying to scratch it and has clears it away in places

I'd go back to the Doc Sterryn and tell him it's not working - surely there are things out there with better strength (?)
Have you tried bepanthen cream? (not that I have...)

Try the Aveeno cream in a tub - it has menthol which will take the itch out of it, so they stop scratching and it can heal. Plus it is also a good moisturiser. have heard really good things about it in our allergy group.
Or xma-ease which you can get in a red tube. Its made from all natural ingredients so may be good if they are sensitive to chemicals in other moisturisers.

Just one more thing. If its not severe, as in red and weeping, then I would try a few non-steroid creams first before getting a script for one. And you have to try them for 3 or 4 days before you know if its working or not.

i think it comes and goes in 5-7yr cycles...well it does with me and a couple of other people i know. both jack and my skin have flared up these past couple of weeks so yes, i'd say it's a seasonal thing.

I spoke to a mum at a parent rooom a few weeks back - her boy had big scabs all over which was excema healing (I knew as my sister had excema as a baby). I was chatting to her about what finally ehaled it. She said that she had tried everything and had not even been able to kiss her baby anywhere excpe the tip of his nose for a couple of months, the excema was so bad.
What she used that fixed it up really fast was a multi vitamen from the Usana range. It was so successful that she has become a consultant for them (she is a nurse). I made sure to take her card as I was worried we might have problems with our family history. Anyway, it might work for any of your excema babies and it might not. I can post her website if that is allowed and if anyone is interested? (Not sure if that would be advertising or not).

Miss, do post the website address, i would be interested. I ended up using the hydrocortison cream and some of the johnsons soothing naturals tonight as she scratched her head nearly raw last night. That was with the Aquaeous lotion on there, so shows how good that is...NOT! It seems everybody I talk to says it doesn't seem to do much which is a shame considering the size of the tub I have

Aqueous cream is a really good soap substitute and moisturiser. It probably works best at keeping their skin moisturised once it has healed, not for actually getting rid of the eczema in the first place.

i use aqueous as a soap and if my skin is really bad, i use it as a moisturiser as well. as aimeejoy said, it's more to keep the skin moisturised to prevent flare-ups than to heal.

So what do you recommend for actually getting it to heal? My poor bubba is covered in excema from head to foot - I kid you not. Dam DH's skin problems

I have had a few mums tell me the Aveeno cream is really good cos of the menthol, so it stops them itching. Is the hydrocortisone working?

Han's got infected one time and the only thing that would heal it was antibiotics. It looked really really sore.
Keep her nails as short as possible.
The thing that worked for us in the end was antibiotics, then strong hydrocortisone on any redness that flared up (I didn't like the thought of steriod creams but it got that bad ) but mostly trying to work on preventative measures once it was under control... like changing washing powder to sensitive or ecostore and moisturising in likely eczema patches about 600 times a day.
Aqueous cream did absolutely bloody nothing for us. Emulsifying was good as a maintenance thing but won't treat eczema. I had to stick with that tho as I couldn't afford to buy all the other lotions and potions!!
good luck!

I'm a shocker with eczema, been battling it since I was a tot...
I'd say it is the season change over, probably even more so as it's been quite damp - I've had a massive flare-up myself and it's not fun at all.
Aveeno is brilliant, I find I use that straight after showering etc, and I use alpha-keri soap...
Then where my eczema is really bad, i use Lemnis Fatty Cream, which contains a very small amount of hydrocortisone, so it's good for helping clear it up and keeping it at bay.
Hope this helps somewhat... Poor wee chook, eczema sucks!
