Andrew is in hospital as a patient in the children's ward. I got home from Napier last night at 7.30pm and as I was driving into Palmy I gat a call from DH to say Andrew was sick (sor tummy and back and ears) and he was taking him to the hospital. I stayed with him as I had just drunken a red bull so had heaps of energy (even afer the drive home and the concert before that). So we went into ED at 10pm and the dr had a check of him and tried to keep his temp down (was sitting around 39-40 for a while, finally came down at 2am) and found out that he has an (other) ear infection and white blood cells were sky high. I came home with him at 2.30am and I got about 2 hours sleep when he threw up so back to ED we went at 5am. Saw the same dr again who got the pead in straight away and after another blood test (this time an iv was put in) Andrew was admitted. He saw the pead just before I left and he was still waiting on a few blood results to come back but his throat and ears a majorly infected and a few lyph(sp?) nodes are inflamed. But still the white cell count is climbing. Fingers crossed he is ok. But i'm going to have a few hours sleep now before I go back up there.
I am so glad my sister was able to come up to palmy from Wellington today to help out with Josh.

oh thats awful when your baby is sick (no matter how older baby they are)
Brooke was the same two weekends ago, she threw up all day saturday, took her temp and it was 41.. I kid you not I checked again cause i thought it was a wrong reading. Rung the dr line (we have no weekend dr on here or else would of been straight round there and A and E is half hour drive) she suggested to get the temp down - cold bath, fan, strip her off - these all were done although brooke said she was freezing. It took pamol and another 2 hours for her temp to come down to 38.7 (still high but less)Also what worried me was her neck was sore and she complained it was sore and you know what went thru my mind - menegitis! we just kept an eye on her all sunday she wasn't herself, monday she woke and cried cause her throat was very sore, took to Dr she has Strep throat.
I tell you this story as Andrew sounds alot like what Brooke was like.. I hope he is feeling better soon.

Thanks everyone for your support. Andrwe is still in hosptial and is for tonight at least (DH is with him over night as I want my bed and a few hours of solid sleep). His white blood cells are still rising even thou he has done a full day of IV antibiotics. So they are growing his bloods for some cultures to see what it is that he has. I have been told a few things (only the mild things) that could be wrong with him but they haven't touched on the big things (I know what huge white cell counts in children sometimes means - but i'm so hoping its not that) so we are just waiting so them - hopefully we will have an idea tonight.
Hes still not his usual self (Palmy ladies have seen him full of energy) all he wants to do is lay on his bed and read books and only eat soft foods or drink. We will tomorrow talk removing tonsillis and putting grommets back in (hopefully they will do it then).
But in the mean time its the waiting game...

Thanks Laura that was really nice.
Well my sister came up yesterday and helped out for a bit (she has work tomorrow so had to go back down today) with Josh so we could get sorted. Josh is having a bit of formula every now and then so he fed from me last night before he went home with my sister and then they came up first thing this morning for another fed, and in between then had formula.
Hoepfully when I go back up soon they may have a few answers. I have managed to get an extension on my assignment that is due tomorrow (but me being me wants to hand it in tomorrow) so at least that is one good thing.

Has your DH got time off work? I'd offer to give a hand but my house is full of ear infections at the moment
-------------
|
Posted By: mummy_becks
Date Posted: 04 September 2007 at 7:46pm
DH isn't working at the moment - very long story there. Ear infections are nothing to him, he currently has a burst ear drum (I am so getting the dr that removed it in trouble - so should have never happened ).
Well the lesser of the 2 evils has been taken out of the picture, he doesn't have glandular fever but the big evil is still hanging over his head, but I am so hoping its not that. It has been confirmed that he has an ear and throat infection - but we knew that as his ear drum had burst and the paed saw he had a throat infection. The paed is hopefully going to get him to have the grommet put back in and his tonsillis out. But we have to still wait for the cultures to grow. DH is staying with him tonight.

Hey Becks, just wanted to give you some support and tell you that my sister had something similar happen to her about 2 months ago. Sore throat and ears with white blood cells through the roof. After 4 days in hospital they sent her home with no idea what was going on, she didn't respond to the antibiotics till day 3. All her blood work and cultures came back normal as well.
Hoping you get the same result.

Update from becks:
Andrew is home now and josh has tonsillitis.. she will post more once she can get on here.
|
Posted By: mummy_becks
Date Posted: 05 September 2007 at 4:39pm
OK finally it will let me to post. Andrew was discharged today. Cultures came back clear. He is on a 5 day course of antibiotics (a rather strong dose) and then next Wed i'll take him back to the hospital to have some blood tests done and to see if things have settled down.
But now the little one has tonsillitis, they are on the same antibiotic so we have the same antibiotic in the fridge but different strengths and doses - not that great with sleep deprived parents.

Nope they didn't, I didn't get to see the paed this morning (I was still in bed ) to ask him what the go was with them, so next Wed I will be asking. He has an appointment next month with the ENT so i'll be asking then if it can go back in and if the tonsillis can come out, and i'll be seeing the ENT not a lacky this time.
I had a talk with my GP this afternoon (when I was there with Josh) about Andrew and I read the letter that the hospital had sent him about Andrew's grommets and the one that had been taken out was already out and just siting in the canal so maybe he isn't to blame now.
