I saw my GP today. I was diagnosed with epilepsy last year after 3 seizures so am on meds. So my pregnancy is classed as high risk, even though there shouldn't be any extra issues.
My GP said he is refering me to the ante-natal clinic so that I can see the obstetrician there. He said that I don't need to get a MW if I am happy to have all my care done through the hospital. But I'm feeling a little bit unsure about it all He did say that if I would prefer to find my own MW thats not a problem. What if I wait for the hospital to contact me (which could be anytime) and then decide I'm not happy, it might be too late to find a MW, there aren't too many down here anymore. Has anyone else had a 'high risk' pregnancy and had all their care done at the hospital instead of through a MW? I'm really not too sure what to do. |

Kell has ask her about it. She had one in Palmy and one in Auckland. ------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived! |

I had a "high risk" pregnancy I guess with the gremlins, but I chose to have midwife care instead of going thru the hospital team. I contracted a private OB to be on call and be there at the delivery in case of complications and when I had a hospital admit at 26 weeks pregnant he came to see me. It did cost me tho. I could have gone thru the hospital but for me it was important to try and 'normalise' the pregnancy (yeah right!) and I trusted the midwife I had as she had delivered Maya as well. -------------  Maya Grace (28/02/03)

PS. Willie's ex and the mother of my girls' half siblings is a very severe epileptic (as in intellectually handicapped due to oxygen deprivation during seizures) and she had no additional complications during either of her pregnancies, but she did have to alter her meds. ------------- Maya Grace (28/02/03)

yeah I'm not worried about any complications or anything, I'm pretty confident that everything will be ok. I'm on a fairly low dose anyway.
But I would like to know that if I did need that extra care then the right people would be there when needed. I've just done some research on the net and found out that it will most likely be the hospital team that my GP is refering me to. So will be hospital MW's and OB's. So I guess thats not such a bad thing. I guess I can still ring them if I have any issues just like I would with an independant MW |

i went thru the high risk clinic in auck for both my boys. the advantages are that your scans are all done thru the hospital and therefore free, the team is really good and know exactly whats going on and they are there for you if you need anything. Toby was transverse and they turned him for me twice and worked really hard to get me the birth i wanted.
disadvantages are that you dont necessarily get the mw you have been seeing thru the pregnancy for the delivery but in my case i had lovely ladies both times and it didnt matter...and same goes for the after care. but from what i understand that may not happen with a independent mw anyway. i have chosen to go independent for this pregnancy and so far am nor overly impressed with way things are going and am wishing i had gone thru the hospital again. ------------- http://www.myfitnesspal.com/weight-loss-ticker">

I went with a hospital midwife and was sooo happy - we'll def be doing the same next time. So what if she wasn't the one delivering my baby - I didn't really care who it was and the team that delivered Gina were really really good. We had a doctor at the delivery and also 2 obs as Gina was born a month too early and I'm really really happy with the care we received. I felt quite secure in the knowedge that they do those things all the time and are ready for any issues that may arrise.

So those of you that went through the hospital MW's, did your doctor you, and did the hospital then send you a letter?
yummumymummy did you just contact the hospital yourself and say you wanted a hospital MW? |

I think the details were in the pregnancy pack my GP gave me. I just rang them and they told me to go and see them. I met a representitive who explained how it all worked and gave me heaps of info. I rang her later to tell her I wanted to go with one of the options they offered and was assigned a m/w based on my suburb. I saw that m/w for the whole of my pregnancy - she came for the apptms to a Gp clinic around the corner from where I live. She was not there for the birth - I was with a hospital team - but she did come to see a few days later. Thats nice to know yummymummy .... I ecided on a hospital based mw and delivery by the hospital team as they made me feel at ease from the very first time I contacted them and my mw is lovely! I have been a little worried about not knowing anyone at the birth, but I figure Ive had three orthapeadic (sp) operations and I didnt know that team ... and it all worked out fine ------------- Mummy to Issy (3) and Elias (18 months) I did it .. 41 kgs gone! I'm glad you liked the service at the hospital yummumummy, hopefully the team down here will be just as helpful.
I think I will now just wait until about the end of next week and if I haven't heard from anyone then I will call the hospital. From what you ladies have told me, I'm now feeling much more confident about seeing the hospital team instead of an independent MW. I don't think it matters too much that I might not know the MW at the birth. Thanks for the information
