I was talking to someone about this the other day and then the rash thread reminded me...
we washed ALL of ellas clothing before she wore it for first time...and even when mum said at 3 months that I probably didnt need to I kept washing all of her clothes before hand and every wash in LUX Flakes...and still do even now...we have not had any rashes, allergic reactions to dyes, cloth, wool etc or anything....and i wash her clothing etc sperate to ours too always!
I also removed ALL tags from all clothing up to 3 months old so that nothing even irritated her.
just thought someone might find this tip helpful. Im sticking with a proven method for us for at least the first year I think now.
add some tips here for new mums if you have some too....

Dont wash them with "chemicals" for the first 28days. But you dont have to be like me & not wash them at all LOL
BTW they will still have that "baby" smell coz they dont really need the frills. I wish i could bottle it up & keep it forever....

I wash everything in Eco Store Powder and also have had no problems. Washing everyones clothes in the same wash makes things easier time wise.

Not washing related but I found the little crossover type body suits from JK to be sooooo much easier than the ones that have to go over his head! I reach for these everytime now as I can lie him on them and dress him without anything going over his head...therefore less cries

I've always used dynamo washing liquid (hate the powder, always get streaks) since Ella was born and we've never had any problems. My advice is try the washing powder/liquid you usually use and if there is a reaction, change to something gentler. Otherwise you're just paying extra $$$ for no reason.

Yes it does as I also do an eco wash as my machine has that function.

Slack here, but I use cheapo washing powder, didn't wash new clothes before putting them on Sam and have never had an allergy problem. Sam has never had nappy rash or an allergic reaction to anything.
Just me though.

Sam has rashes but not from the washing powder. I was using Persil Sensitive but now I wash all of her stuff in Ecostore, just cause it's easier.
Lately I have been adding a capful of the Dettol laundry rinse to her nappies. Now they come out smelling like Eucyluptus(sp?). Mmmm
Oh, and I always wash her new stuff before she wears it,and remove all the tags so they don't irritate her.

Definitely wash before wear and hang in sun to dry (even inside on a rack next to window on a yucky day). My Aunty told me not to iron baby clothes as it defeats the purpose of hanging them outside?? I don't know if that's true but it works for me as less work!
I also only ever put Kaleb's clothes in the dryer to 'finish' them off - so about 5/10mins and always on a low heat.
I wash all his clothes and nappies in Ecostore but use a normal powder for us. We go through quite a few loads a week and can't afford to use Ecostore for us too (although I always washed my breastpads and maternity bras in with his stuff).

Same - My brother forgot to do this with some underwear and ended up with a nasty rash. So yeah I always wash new clothes before wearing them. With the standard Cold Power/Surf powder that we always use.

yeah i know now that anytng without a tag on it is 0-3 months and now take only big tags off....not for trade me but just to give me an idea of size!
for us its not a price issue for wash stuff altho understand it can be for some....

I always was clothes before wearing them, and was extra careful with bubs, we use a mixture of persil and ecostore. (was told to use ecostore on nappies to stop detergent residue). Think we will swap entirely to ecostore according to their website they work out cheaper cos you don't have to use so much, plus I really like the smell.
I would say don't buy any T-shirts they just ride up on bub, if it doesn't button in the crouch don't buy it!!! You can still put cute tops over the top of body suits. I have a stack of T-shirts that I have never bothered putting on him cos they are too much of a nuisance.

In her first few months McKayla was literally almost in only bodysuits. She had one little dress but found she was more comfortable in the soft cotton of bodysuits ect.
Wash clothes before she wore them. (I think about 3 times) And line dried it.
Didnt take tags off except for one that was irritating her.
I actually found it is better to bath baby just in water and a bit of shampoo about once a week on her hair in the beginning. McKayla will get a slight rash if you tried to use anything and actually got freaking burnt by Aquas cream. (we couldnt believe that.) Poor child screamed blue murder. Another bath didnt help. So good old Breastmilk on her helped.
Other thing that help is for mom not to wear strong perfume at all. Affects them quite a lot.

We use amolin for washing bubs stuff and always prewash everything. Some children have had reactions to ecostore product, so that was why we went for amolin.
We didn't use anything in the bath until very recently, just water and wash cloths and it really helped keep her skin soft (even with bathing her pretty much every day).
Lily reacted to zinc and castor oil nappy rash creams, so we just use bepanthen, it cleared up the burn style rash from the other cream in 2 days. Now I use a dab of it on the cuts she gives to herself with those pesky nails, and they heal a lot faster.

I am a washing nerd, am proud to be (sorry all you eco mums) I sperate EVERYTHING and wash Charlottes clothes seperately, and wash Jacobs singlets with her clothes. We use persil ,which I have found to be great, but have recently begun using BEE "I'll be your gentle brute" gentle washing liquid, and I LOVE IT ir smells sooo nice. I bought it for her nappies (which I wash in hot on their own) but apparently it's not "reccomended" for them, so have bought Eco Store liquid, and am using up the BEE on her clothes.
I'm not really a believer in using different detergents for Kids, although I do have to say, I prefer Persil as it has fewer fillers, and my sensitive (and the kids sensitive) skin has never reacted with it, and I never never (on all of our clothes) use the "full amount" of washing powder unless everything is REALLY dirty, I only use about 3/4 of the "reccomended" amount.
I wash before wearing too, can't be too careful with pesticides etc

Thats such a got tip about putting bepanthen on cuts, Caprece is always cutting her wee face.
man I'm a shocker I never wash anything new, never cut the tags off and use whatever powder is on sale. I'm real bad at adding a little bit extra washing powder too.
I am a real nerd with separating things tho we have 6 baskets, one for each of us, one for towels and one for woollens/delicates and I wash everything on its own.
Neither of my kids have ever had a reaction to anything either. Ben on the other hand has quite bad excema but that eco store stuff didn't make a difference so i don't bother.

Oh, and one thing the plunket nurse said awas to use less of whatever you use to wash clothes with for bubbas stuff - I use about half, it still is clean and smells great. Obviously not for really soiled stuff or nappies of course.

It's funny how we all sort washing differently! I sort: nappies, towels, dark colours, light colours.

Hey,
I have been washing my nappies on a hot full wash. If it is just wees will a quick wash be ok? and also is it ok to wash them on cold? We pretty much wash all our clothes on a quick wash, unless they are really soiled (like when I have been down the river with the dogs ) but have been washing the nappies differently as the instructions said hot wash but seems overkill if its just wees. Does it have to be hot for the absorbency?
