Thought is might be a good idea to pool our knowledge and see what good parenting books there are out there-

I LOVE 'How to talk so your kids will listen, and listen so your kids will talk'. I think it has some really good ideas about parenting/discipline. I have just read 'Siblings without rivalry' and found that brilliant too- its one I will keep by the bed and read often. 'Raising Girls' is another one I found really helpful- made DH read it too, much to his disgust. 'Raising boys' is supposed to be really good too but haven't found a need to read it myself! I found 'Of course I love you, now go to your room!' quite informative. 'Kids- they're worth it!' I found ok but found the others better. I found the 'Contended little baby' book awful but some people love it. I am just about to read 'Magic 1-2-3' which is about discipline for 2-12 year olds so will let you know how that goes.

What books have other people found helpful?

My favourite parenting books are:

  • Einstein Never Used Flash Cards -- it's subtitled "How our children really learn -- and why they need to play more and memorize less". That pretty much sums it up. It's all about how play is so important and how kids are over-stimulated with "educational" videos and toys.
  • Touchpoints Birth to 3: The Essential Reference for the Early Years -- this is a T Berry Brazelton book that explains child development from a comprehensive physical, cognitive, emotional, and behavioural point of view. It's brilliant.
  • Becoming Attached: First Relationships and How They Shape Our Capacity to Love -- it's all about the parent-child bond and how it influences the way we grow up and the choices we make as parents.
  • What's Going On In There? How the Brain and Mind Develop if the First Five Years of Life -- it's not a scary to read as it sounds, and it basically explains how babies' brains develop and how they learn, and the nature vs nurture thing with regard to development.
  • How Babies Talk: The Magic and Mystery of Language in the First Three Years of Life -- gives a good picture of language development and has really helped me through Em's grommets and early speech patterns.

I'm also reading a brilliant book called The Mommy Myth: The Idealization of Motherhood and How It Has Undermined Women. It's about how the media portrays motherhood as this unattainable perfection and how women feel like they can never measure up. It's not really a parenting book, but it's really making me think, as I have "role issues"!

I've found the "What to expect when you're expecting" and the other first years version of that good too.

Also Toddler Taming is a funny read, good advice too.

Haven't really read any others for a year or more!

toddler taming is constantly on the nightstand at our house. read "raising boys" but wasn't that impressed. I loved the "of course I love you now go to your room" - fabulous ideas I still use now./ when Jake yells "I;m stuck" i now say "oh no, what ever will you do now" and let him work it out rather than rescueing him - good for me as I can continue sitting.

Ooooo that becoming attached one sounds good! Might have to look into that... Mums all into attachement and bonding at the moment- shes written an article for the parents centre magazine this coming issue if anyone wants to read it! I haven't read it myself yet but I have had the gyst over the phone

I've also got the 'child of our time' book- is good but I loved the shows even more. Nice to have on hand though for a quick reference.

I love baby and child by penelope Leach its my number one. Second is probably the womanly art of breastfeeding (which I got for 20c at the super shed ) and number 3 is the no cry sleep solution but I leant it to a friend and then she moved to Australia and didn't give it back

I have read a wee bit of raising boys and found it really good I just need to finish it now.
