Ok, I have to admit I am slightly obsessed with Shorters and watch it religiously but....

I just wanted to ask if anyone else saw "Shannon" breastfeeding on the show last week and didn't you all think it was GREAT!!! I am so impressed that they did that on the show and hope it helps slowly make b/f in public less of a taboo area! I just had to share my excitement

on the zoo last night they showed a lady breastfeeding too, she was doing it in front of the orangutan that is pregnant to encourage the orang to breastfeed too.

Yeah it was in one of the Womans Day/weekly a little while ago.

She was pregnant and it was planned and David Whakira (sp?) - Paul (aka Tama) has a kid as well and that was planned. They are both about 19 - 20. Shannon (don't know her real name) has a boyfriend and might even be engaged now and David is engaged to another girl and I think they have a little boy...

Also Hayley (Bec Cartright) off Home and Away is pregnant in real life and on TV!! I should become an actress!! Get paid and can be preggaz / have baby on the job!! AWESOME!! hehe

i really wonder if they would get that many letters against. Maybe i was just lucky but i never had a prob when i was b/f jaidyn in public, no neg comments or looks that i noticed. In fact i usually got the gooey looks (from woman - i would question it from men lol) are there really ppl out there that have the gall to react poorly to a mother b/f her baby? I took the boys on a plane from akl to palmy when they were 5mths and was feeding jaidyn (in the aisle seat) with heaps of folk on the plane gooing and gaaing when he decided to have a big look around hence flashing my wears to everyone and no-one battered and eyelid. I thinki if i saw someone being neg to a b/f mum i would have words with them - in fact i know i would!!!!

Hey I'm in Aus and Hayley in Home and Away is now being played by another actress. It drives me crazy when they do that! Cause of course, we can't tell the difference!

Back to breastfeeding, I fed on the plane too, and no-one seemed to care at all, although I must admit I felt a little uncomfortable.

The "new" Hayley just came on the show here last night - she annoyed me... It annoyed David too cause she wasn't as "hot" as Bec Cartwright!!

Seems like shes a first time professional actress - but as my mate said today Flynn now isnt the original Flynn - I can't even remember!!

Im giving myself 6 months to forget who Bec Cartwright was!!

I have just spotted that they have changed Hayley! I am not impressed I am however slightly confused. Every time I see her I am like 'who is that!'. I hate it when they do that, would have been better if they killed her off or something.
Anyways back to shorty street, I am really pleased that they have normalised b/feeding on the show. I never got any funny looks b/f the boys and I was never brave enough to tandum feed the girls in public Would feed them by themselves tho.

She dosent even look CLOSE to the "real" Hailey! At least years ago, when they swapped acoters, (Selena on H&A years ago swapped for a while) they made an effort to replace her with one that looked similar!!
Did you see on Rove a few months ago, Kate Hudson was on there talking about breast feeding. It's all good!

If they had dyed the "new" hayley's hair blonde it would've been a bit better or had an episode where she wanted a "change" so dyed her hair... bit odd I think.

I noticed since having Arna that b/feeding in public I always got "looks" from other people - but I always used the changing rooms at the malls with the "breastfeeding room", a chair behind a curtain!!
With #2 I am not going to care!! Especially with Arna, don't want her sitting in a bathroom for 20 mins while I feed!!

Times are changing though!! YAY

when i was in aucks for idol we had lunch in the same cafe as the shorty street stars and one of the ladies was telling me that shannon (i think her name is amber) had had a baby girl two weeks previous, this was AGES ago. Marlene,i think bec cartwright may well be off h&a for good as shes left to have her baby etc etc.I remember the 2nd flynn(hot blonde guy) but i cant remember the original actor.even old pippa(sallys mum) isnt the original pippa.in a few years time i think we will be like 'now who was the actress that played hayley"

my man was on shorty st!!.back when minnie crozier was a receptionist.he had to go up and chat her up in the bar lol,and another episode he done was as an extra at a party for nick Harrison.he says that the extras spend half the day in the green room reading books etc and yet they still get paid like 500 buks or so!!!!!!!!!! He also done a vodafone ad,export gold beer ad and a couple of other things too i think.

nnnoooo plaza is terrible!!!! tiny piddly little room with only 1 chair with high arms that you can't b/f in. lol. downtown (where the movie theatres are) has a good room across from the souvenir shop.. nice and spacious and comfy, or, the mother's lounge in the toilets in the square - has a room with two big comfy lounge suites in it... thos are the best places to go - plaza one is always packed - you are always waiting for someone, or someone is waiting for you... it's just not a nice place.

Now dont you think that more malls and such need to make more of an effort with changing rooms/feeding rooms and public toilets etc!
After using the public loos and changing rooms so often in the last few years there are really very few that are 'comfortable' to use. They either smell funky, dont have enough space or just arnt user friendly.
I dont know maybe I just have a new pet peeve.

Oooo went to Queensgate Westfield (in Lower Hutt) yesterday... Mother's room is faaaaaaantastic. Great change tables, comfy chairs with low arms (brilliant for dangly legs) a TV etc etc.

The only thing that I regret that they did not have is one of those seats in the toilet where you can strap the child onto the wall (like a high chair without a tray) so that you can go to the loo without having to put the babe on the ground. There is one up at the public toilets at the Botanic Gardens. Most brilliant invention EVER

wow. i found a great baby change room in the coastlands mall in paraparamu.. they have a few in there, but the main one is so nice and big and has separate cubicles.. soo good. I think one of the worst ones apart from palmy, that i have seen, is the one int he main mall in Hamilton.. It's kewl in that it has a couple of cubicles, and it has a tv for the kids with tweenies etc playing on it. but it's this long narrow room and you still can't really fit buggies in it.

the ones in Japan are amzing. NZ could take some lessons. they are all clean and smell great. Most have nappy and juice dispensing machines, big comfy chairs to breasfeed and even a small play area for older kids to wait. ON specific days a nurse comes in to check the babies....and micorwaves and hot water and sterilizers........boohoo. coming back to the crappy plaza!!

You know, the thing is, there are often more "offensive" things on the show, as they are quite "topical". For example, (and I in no way find it offensive at all)the relationship of Jay and Maia, Claires promiscuity, adultery, theft, deception... I could go on. I actually enjoyed readign that guys posts until thin, he had come across as thooughtful and intellegent (so?) and maybe an older teen? Oh well, I love a good stir up!

yes. I recently took part in the "baby friendly initiative" survey. Hospitals get audited, so they question new mums about things like how long after birth was your baby put onto breast, did you get help b/f, were you offered or suggested to give formula. They only get the baby friendly endorsement if all the answers from mums come upto scratch. My lactation consultant is also a midwife at the hosp, and she said that hospitals are phasing out formula unless in special circumstances, and, soon, mothers will have to supply their own, as they are no longer going to be getting "freebies" from the milk companies.
Or something like that. I think its hard on mums who can't, I never got any milk in, so I had to wait for about a week for the tablets to start working. We were expresinng every 2 hours, sometimes only getting 10mls off, Jake wouldn't go near me anyhow and had a naso gastric tube s well. Eventually I asked if we could give him formula so he could eat, and the nurse said I'm so glad u said that, as we aren't allowed to suggest it. I said, well, he's gotta eat.
Anyhoo, after 6 weeks of expresing and bottlefeeding, and my wonderful lactation consultants help, he breastfed, and now is a little legend at it. Also he takes bottle and formula no worries as well, so thts great too. Hence why I feel so strongly about it!! I know not everyone wants to or can, but I can, so I should be able to do it where ever i like!

i feel really strongly about them not taking out formula. I hope they still make it readily available in the neonat units as i couldnt keep up with the boys demands and needed formula to top them up (i too expressed for the boys - jaidyn b/f at 6 weeks and keegs refused to so expressed for him for another 4mths but had to give it up in the end as was exhausted trying to feed 2 bubs then expressing on top). i would have been so stressed (even more so than i was what with all the expressing - the 2hrly thing sucks aye eps thru the night so lonely).
I am all for b/f but i do think the formula mums need a break out there as i said keeg went onto formula and i felt so guilty about that esp with jaidyn being b/f but i did the best i could. i too try the tablets but found they didnt do all that much for me well not that i noticed. and i seroisly think they need to sort the whole we cannot suggest you formula feed your baby. what happens if they have a mum who has no clue about babies - just let the baby starve! Its like with keegs when he wouldnt b/f and after 2 weeksof trying i asked for him to be bottle fed ebm and the nurse was like oh so glad you said that at last. they keep taking his ng tube out so he would get hungry and feed but he didnt want boobie and it just stressed me and him out so i would tell them to put it in. once we went onto bottle that was us life was so much better and we were finally allowed home but they were so pro b/f that i felt i had to leave there being a b/f mum.

I think that they need to give mums who can't bf a break, and offer them the choice, instead of forcing them to keep trying b/f and making mum and baby stressd out. I'm not too sure why they are doing this? NZ b/f rate is great anyway, over 70% I think it is. It does suck how they can't suggest it, though, aye? You'd think its poison how some go on about it. don't get me wrong, I am an avid b/f'er, and Jacob has formula days as well (after mums been at the wines..)its all about personal choice, though don't you think? After all, WE have to do it, not them!

I found that really interesting with the baby friendly hospital thing when i worked in palmy recently - it's basically about the fact that the world health organisation decided that breast is best and the ways in which to make sure that the majority of mums do it and to help them through all the steps, eg rooming in not offering supplemented feeds etc. It's been around for about a decade now but NZ is pretty slow in catching up with it. I don't know if it means they would stop giving formula etc in neonates because those babies are in different cirumstances where alot of the time they need supplementing to grow and get healthy, but for normal babies they are trying to get the breastfeeding off to a good start i spose.   That nurse was right to tell you she isn't allowed to suggest it, if you do decide to feed formula you usually have to sign a consent form saying that you want to and give them permission to give you info about it, and it's all documented.

I think i can see it from both sides now - which is good but kinda sucks cos i'm in between a rock and a hard place.... i can see how not giving supplemental feeds of formula would help b/feeding, help build supply etc, but also, after having so many probs with feeding paris and being so frustrated and feeling like a social outcast, failure and not having the info i needed to choose formula etc... I do wonder if we are actually going to make breastfeeding less successful by scaring off mums and making them feel bad if they can't get it first time round (and who ever does?).

sorry i ramble.

Nathaniel's brother has a moderate lactose intollerance that his kids have inherited with a vengance! The older two are severly allergic, to the point that they can't even have Sarah's breastmilk! The kids are given soy formula instead. I assume the youngest is the same, but as she was only born on Tuesday I haven't heard anything like that yet.

Ezekiel had lost weight before he was born as he was overdue. The nurses were force feeding him normal formula, and he was vomiting it back up. Sarah was having so much trouble getting them to listen to her about the severity of his big sister's allergies and the (entirely accurate) probability he had them too!

Ana, I'm with you there, I felt like crying when I was reading that chicks posts and she said let them wait when they are crying they're only babies. THEN she said shes a mother!!! (what sort of mother, I wonder after reading her anti pram rant as well!)Talk about frustrated!!! i jsut wanted to hit something!!! I know everyone is entitled to thier own opinions, but hers were jsut asking for trouble!!! Normally I'm laid back, but she made my blood boil, like hse had gone over to the "dark side".... look at me getting wound up over a STUPID post bout a tv programme!! talk about NO LIFE!

Becca, thats really sad about your poor wee nephew and neice.

In Australia (well NSW at least) you have to provide your own formula, bottles and sterilising equipment if you aren't bfeeding. My cousin had decided before having her babies that she didn't want to breastfeed, which in my opinion is her absolute right as a mother, and yet she was given no support to bottle feed. With her first she felt guilty about the whole thing, and almost sneaked her baby it's bottles, but she has just had her second, and being wiser now she basically told the hospital where to go.

It's hard to know where to draw the line. I had 9 days in hospital with mastitis when Maya was 2-3 weeks old, and I had no choice but to give her supplemental formula as the infection affected my supply on one side. On the other hand, I was determined to bf, and yet the support was not there. Had I had useful and effective help to latch Maya I could have been discharged much earlier, as I wasn't allowed to go home until she could feed properly.

Strangely enough tho, those few bottles of cows milk based formula were enough to create an immune system reaction that contributed to her dairy allergy, and the next time she had a dairy based formula at 5 mths she had a massive reaction

       READ THIS

About a month ago there was a woman standing by the
Northlands Shopping
>> >>Centre, Christchurch, Murray road entrance passing out
flyers to all >> >>the
>> >>women going in. The woman had written the flyer herself
to tell about

>> >>an
>> >>experience she had, so that she might warn other women.
The previous >> >>day, this woman had finished shopping,
went out to her car and >> >>discovered that she had a flat.
She got the jack out of the boot and >> >>began to change
the flat. A nice man dressed in business suit and >>
>>carrying a briefcase walked up to her and said, "I noticed
you're >> >>changing a flat tire.Would you like me to take
care of it for you?" The
>> >>woman was grateful for his offer and accepted his
help.. They chatted >> >>amiably while the man changed the
flat, and then put the flat tire and
>> >>the jack in the trunk, shut it and dusted his hands
off. The woman >> >>thanked him profusely, and as she was
about to get in her car, the man
>> >>told her that he left his car around on the other side
of the carpark,
>> >>and asked if she would mind giving him a lift to his
car. >> >>She was a little surprised and she asked him why
his car was on other >> >>side. He said he got turned around
in the shopping center and left >> >>through the wrong exit,
and now he was running late and his car was >> >>around in
the other side of the mall. >> >>The woman hated to tell him
"no" because he had just rescued her from >> >>having to
change her flat tire all by herself, but she felt uneasy.
>> >>Then >> >>she remembered seeing the man put his
briefcase in her boot before >> >>shutting it and before he
asked her for a ride to his car. She told him
>> >>that she'd be happy to drive him around to his car, but
she just >> >>rememberd one last thing she needed to buy.
She told the man that she >> >>could wait for her; she would

what had happened;
>> >>The guard came out to her car with her, but the man had
left. They >> >>opened the boot, took out his locked

>> >>The police opened it (to look for ID so they could
return it to the >> >>man). What they found was rope, duct
tape, and knives. When the police
>> >>checked her "flat" tire, there was nothing wrong with
it,the air had >> >>simply been let out. It was obvious what

I got that in a email a little while ago... Spooky as!!

Was watching "Airline" on Living channel before (English programme) and this lady had a 13 day old baby that was too young to fly by 6 hours, anyway she was b/f him on INTERNATIONAL tv and all you could see was that her top was pulled up (Honestly looked like she was just holding baby) - but because I use to do it I clicked - Goes to show it can be discreet (where those 2 ppl on the shorty st site are 100% against it...)

Weeeeeeeeeeeeee it was him!!!!!

I looked for aaaaages on the site but couldn't find it and was using the spelling "Lathan" in searches. (Dumbass!)

Yeah, I don't make a habit out of picking up hitchhikers but he was good looking (killers aren't good looking are they?!?) He didn't say a lot about who he was except that he'd been in LA for the last couple of years and was back to see his family and friends for a few weeks. I was waaaaay too scared to ask if he was the actor that played Adam.

He was lovely (if a bit arrogant - caught him checking himself out in the mirror [but actually, who doesn't do that?!?]) but played with Hannah when she got grumpy and tolerated me being neurotic because my stupid window wouldn't wind up properly. Stupid thing had come off it's rail thingy. Grrrrr.

Musn't be doing too well in LA if he's hitchhiking from Taupo to Tauranga

Anyway I have just been on the H&A site again and Bec Cartright had a baby girl on the 29 November..

An ecstatic Lleyton Hewitt fired off text messages to friends and family in the middle of the night after his wife Bec gave birth to their first child, a daughter.

The former Home and Away actor most know as Bec Cartwright delivered the healthy girl at about 1.45am (AEDT) on Tuesday in Sydney's exclusive Royal North Shore Private Hospital.

"Lleyton and Bec Hewitt are pleased to announce the overnight arrival of their first child, a healthy baby girl," the Hewitts' manager Rob Aivatoglou said.

"At this stage Lleyton and Bec have not announced a name for their new arrival. Lleyton and Bec are absolutely thrilled.

"Most importantly, everything went smoothly and mother and daughter are well.

"Bec and Lleyton very much look forward to taking their daughter home in the coming days."
