Reading the post about setting up house has prompted me to write this. Most people in NZ are actually under insured when it comes to contents insurance. The average home in NZ has $60,000 contents plus any specified items. Any large value items of jewellery, musical insturments or sporting equipment should be advised to your insurance company and you should check you have an anywhere in NZ cover for them (would hate to not have an engagement ring covered for example). Remember if you stuff isn't worth much (second hand or really old or cheap purchase etc) you should be insured on the cost to replace it, not what it is worth if you have a new for old policy. Once you have a look around your house it soon adds up, and you need to remember to include curtains!
I am happy to answer any questions if you have any, but don't have a lot of knowledge on health or life insurance (and yes, I am kind of back! Jack's sleeping is sorted kind of so have a lot more time) ------------- ">

yep, we did a re-evaluation not to long back and looked around and looked at the kids toys, and their clothes and our gym equipment and cubby house etc etc.. and we re-did ours for $100 grand. So hopefully that would more than cover it. Not that we would probably ever replace half the stuff cos it's not really replaceable. but still. Before then, lol we still had our original policy from when we were flatting.. insured for $25,000. Ha! that would pay for diddly-squat now! ------------- Janine and her 2 cool chicks, Paris & Ayja

| We only have contents insurance for $40,000. We both know this needs to be upped by quite a bit. We are going to wait until we h ave more income (either I go back to work or make more money from home) until we do this though as we have a tight budget as it is. |

Ours is for $60000 and we up ot every year when it comes time to renew our insurance policies. I have a number of named items on the policy (wedding rings x2, engagment ring x1, very expensive necklace, 1x heart rimu cot - that could probably never be replaced, and 2x sets of glasses). I think we are really lucky with our insurance as DH's cousin works in an insurance office in Palmy. WE see him he sorts the policy and then we have to see another woman in the office to pay for it. We get a great deal. ------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived! |

shoosh Sterryn!!! Have to get back into it, going back soon.
Also note that if you deliberately under insurer the insurance company can refuse to renew your policy (this would usually happen after a claim). I can let people know the companies I would suggest, but wont in open forum so you should PM me. It does though depend on your circumstances as well and what you are wanting to insure! ------------- ">

We have $60,000 worth of insurance, plus some extra insurance as we have a 2 bedroom unit attached to our house that we rent out so had to ensure the carpets curtains etc for that as well. Our insurance gave us a checklist to help us work out the replacement cost of everything we have, we were pretty shocked at what it added up to -------------

cuppatea - check your 'house' poilcy for the flat, some include landlords fixtures and fittings to a certain limit so you may be able to cancel the contents policy for the unit ------------- ">

kebakat why don't you ring your insurance company as its not that much more to up it. I went from 50 to 70 and it was only a couple of dollars more. ------------- Ann
