I was just about to leave for a hair appointment this morning, when my engagement ring caught on my clothing. So, I adjusted it with my thumb to find ...
THE DIAMOND GONE!
I can't wear my wedding ring without the engagement ring as it was made to go around the engagement ring, and it's completely vicious on its own (I'm always cutting myself on it when the two separate), and it feels wrong not having any rings on
The sad thing is that there really isn't much point in replacing the diamond, as it's not really a secure setting, and it's just going to happen again. So, now I need to argue the cause with my insurance company for a new ring altogether instead of a fixit ring

That's the thing - I couldn't tell you the last time I was sure it was there This morning alone I'd been outside, hung out washing, picked up dog poo, had a shower ... and who's to say that i didn't lose it in the middle of Newmarket somewhere yesterday, or walking the dogs at the park or ... or ... or ... ARGH! The possibilities! But, believe me, this house is NOT getting vacuumed this weekend! I don't care how much crap there is on the carpet Some of that crap might just be rather expensive
Holy hell.

DH, bless him, will probably be more concerned that I went to the hairdresser and my hair is still straight - he always makes me wash it when I get home so that it goes wogga again. Apparently I just don't look right nicely groomed.
Perhaps I should show him my new bikini wax and THEN tell him

Aww ginger that sucks! I know what you mean about it feeling wrong with no rings on - i feel naked IYKWIM.
Dh lost my engagement ring about year after we got married. I went into hospital to have my ACL reconstructed & had to take my engagement ring & locket necklace off before surgery (which was my wedding present from Dh) so Dh took them, & that was the last I saw of them . I got insurance for the engagement ring & got exact same one, but didn't claim for the necklace. Dh bought me another.
I hope you do find the diamond!

Thanks SB!
I've always worried that this would happen because of the setting, but now that it has, I can't believe it! Always the way It was a marquis (sp?) cut diamond, and secured at either end, so it was almost in a cradle. I've had it looked at twice in the past because I was worried about the diamond 'rocking', so I think if they just replace the diamond, they'll end up doing it again at some stage. Hopefully they'll agree to replace with something else. It sounds awful, but I've already lost my 'engagement ring', so may as well get something that'll go the distance next. Plus. because it was 9ct gold in the setting, the blimmin thing kept turning my fingers black (I react to the copper in the alloy).
Argh.
Half an hour or so til DH wakes up!

Oh. 14ct. I just forced myself to go and examine it (rather tragic staring into a black hole where a diamond used to be!) and one of the claws had broken. It looks like it' cracked sprt of. Doh.

The DH has spoken!
We'll get the diamond replaced and foot the bill for having the ring remade to the original design we wanted (that the jeweller bollocksed up) which will make it MUCH more secure.
It's probably best to go for replacement anyway because it's the diamond that's whopping expensive, as opposed to the ring bit (the diamond was 4/5 of the cost) because it's a marquis.
DH seems vaguely amused (bless him), although he DID make me examine the hair trap in the shower, just in case the hair trap is gross

I think if DH was any more laid back he'd be asleep. I think he's just secretly pleased that I won't let him vacuum! I suppose the other thing is that I didn't lose the ring (he'd have probably gone spacko if I'd done that), and the claw is obviously broken, so ... pfft.
Bollocks.
He did get very grumpy when I wiggled my bare fingers at him and said "Ooooo! Look! I'm not married any more!" ... except for I have an indent on my finger where the rings used to be!

It's the soap/shampoo/conditioner scum part of it that turns my stomach Who knew that something that came out of a bottle smelling so lovely ...
I've given up on the diamond search - it's amazing how many things that don't look even remotely like a diamond, start to look like a diamond when you've been looking all day! ... Oh! Some fluff where the dog had been shedding! Perhaps it's my diamond! It's not? Bollocks.
Now, I have to get to planning what to wear to the Gremlin's birthday party so enough of the diamond searching! Mmmmm ... birthday cake, and lollies, and ... will there be little sausage rolls? I might wear my stretchy pants so I can fit more in
Oh, and DH is taking me ring shopping today We can't buy one of course, but he seems most concerned that I'm going to get propositioned because I'm not wearing my rings I think that if the insurance company gives us the nod to replace, he wants to have a ring on my finger asap!

I spoke to the insurance company this morning, and they said to get the ring into a jeweller of my choice for examination (to make sure there aren't any obvious flaws with the setting, which there are) and that things will go from there. The big hiccup I've encountered at this stage is that the valuation was for $3128 EX GST, and AMI have it noted as INCL GST. Doh! We never picked it up!! Bugger. Still DH has said that f I find something over-value then we'll make up the difference. It seems our price range is a bit funny - there is lots in the just under $3000 range, and then it jumps to the $5000 range. Bollocks.
So, off to AMI at lunch time to fill out a claim form, then off to Diamond & Time to get the ring looked at.

Oooohhh ... bollocks. I've already committed myself to Diamond & Time But thank you anyway!
Bizzarely, last week was the first week I'd not whacked it on anything! I don't think ... maybe it was just exhausted and gave up?
The one good thing about it is that we had the ring made, and it was never the way it was supposed to be and ... ahem ... the design we were shooting for was a D&T one and they still have the same design!! Although the sparkly is smaller
Ug. 2 hours and I can go out there and get something moving anyway.
Oh, and have been to the insurance company - trying to get the girl to understand that the diamond was lost was a mission and a half She could grasp that the ring caught on my jersey, but not that that was what led to the discovery that the diamond was gone. She just kept asking me where it was!

Yay for Diamond and Time and for getting the ring you *really* wanted after all! My dad bought my Mum an indian saphire engagement ring in India, and she had to take it off when she was preg with my brother coz her hands swelled, and I still get blamed for it's disappearance...
Oh and yes, definitely wear stretchy pants!

I got a different woman at the jewellers today, and she was an absolute cow in general. But, they have my ring to do a quote to replace the diamond, and I have been bollocksed for not maintaining my rings properly (apparently you are supposed to get the claws redone every year?? This lady said that the claw had just worn away, but considering you can actually see where it's broken off, I'm not entirely sure how she came to that conclusion. But, such is life.
Anyway, it's underway. Just the quote is going to take a week though, and then I have to take the quote to insurance bla bla bla. It's going to take forever!

OK, this is where it might get tricky. Most insurance companies exclude wear and tear on their policies. That said, the resultant damage is covered. So if they try and stiff you, the wear and tear was on the claw, the resultant damage was the loss of the diamond
------------- ">
|
Posted By: ginger
Date Posted: 08 October 2007 at 6:01pm
Oh fantastic! I'm going to wait and see what the jeweller says because I think that, although the lady was right, and I didn't have the claws looked at every year, I did have them built up at one point, and I think she's wrong about them wearing away. It's pretty easy to see from the other claw that there's still plenty of claw left. Mind you, it did break ... but the diamond has always rocked in the setting (it has even worn away on both sides where it was wearing against the gol!).
Ug, who knows? Wait till the quote comes through I guess. I tried to ask about the diagnosis of the cause, but the lady stonewalled me. I guess I just take it one step at a time.
Thanks for that heads up SB - I couldn't give a toss if I have to pay to get the setting redone - it's the blimmin diamond that cost a fortune!
(plus, if you were a jeweller, don't you think you'd try and get the $3500 job? As in, say the claw broke or whatever instead of wear and tear? Oh well!)
