I wonder if any of you ladies can help me. I have come down with the mother of all head colds, consisting of a sore scratchy throat, a head that feels as though it's filled with concrete blocks and cotton wool alternatively, major cases of phlegm and coughing and extreme tiredness (and nausea if I eat). Do you know of anything that may help relieve the symptoms?? The chemist gave me a sore throat gargle and a nose spray, but they aren't really doing a lot (and the iodine based throat gargle is really not tasty). I just want it gone!!! It's also made me extremely emotional and I just want to cry, because it's NOT good timing when I'm looking for a permanent job and need to go to interviews etc.

Sleep, minik8e. I'm afraid that when you're that sick, you just need to sleep. And drink lots of liquid - I find that when I'm feeling sick eating, a beef soup (watties, whatever) helps, as long as it's not spicey.

Sleep...ok an early night tonight then. I'm drinking a lot of fluid cos I'm soooo thirsty (you know when your lips keep drying out??) so that's something. It's Murphy isn't it - to get it at the worst possible time

Codral Day and Night always helps me. Maybe not in getting rid of the actual cold/flu but it makes you feel heaps better so you can cope with it  Oh but thats if you can persuade the chemist that you aren't a P addict

I use sudafed day and night, I find it helps treat the symptoms heaps better than some of the others I tried and has less side effects. Nurofen for the headaches. Lots of sleep like the others said would be best but if you have to go to an interview then the medication should help a bit.

Lemon and honey drinks for the throat and clear the head, chamomile tea to help calm and make it easier to cope with. Panadol for temperatures and headaches, be very careful about using Nurofen when you have an empty stomach, as it can eat thru your stomach lining. Not good. Now, to combat the nausea, peppermint tea is meant to help, as with anything with peppermint in it. Or, if you are desperate to be able to eat and attend job interviews, your pharmacist can sell you Nausicalm, which has Cyclizine in it, and it works well. I'm on morphine at the moment and it is keeping that nausea under wraps. You will have to sign for it, and its about $10. There are other antiemetics (anti nausea medications) around, but this for me has been the best. Otherwise lemonade ice blocks, and water crackers should stay down, or at least give you something to throw up if and when it happens. Hang in there Chicka! |

I've been having lemon and honey drinks (got an awesome producing lemon tree in the back yard), haven't managed to get sleep yet (am doing a temp job at home). I have chamomile tea!!! Might have some before I go to bed. I permanently suck on peppermints anyway, to try and cut down my smoking  so that's helping, it's just as soon as I eat something it isn't a good feeling. I've just been having Panadol for the headaches for now, though they're not doing a whole lot.

Hi Kate I have the same thing, although the throat is a lot better this week but now I sound squeaky and nasal but at least I'm starting to feel better! I used Lemsip capsules for the sore throat last week, and now I'm using Dimetapp. Nurofen, Codral, Sinutab, Lemsip capsules are all pretty similar, most of them are 95%(?) panadol with one other thing.
Hope you get better soon, it seems to be a 2-week bug. Oh and I hear ya on interviews - I started a new job the day before I came down with this!
Know what's gonna help me get better tonight though? Self-saucing pudding! I'm so tired!! -------------  |
