Emma Rose is starting to want to climb out of her cot, so we're thinking about getting her a big-girl bed. I haven't seen any that really thrill me, so was sitting here thinking about what to do and had a brainwave. If I got her a simple single-sized mattress frame, I could potentially make a headboard out of MDF and custom paint it myself. But... I don't have the first clue about woodworking! Where do I buy a sheet of MDF from? Can you buy simple bed frames that can have a piece of MDF bolted to them? And if I want to get it cut into a certain shape, where do I go for that? We don't own a skill saw...

Can anyone give me a clue? Or has anyone done something similar?

Do you have a Bunnings Warehouse or PlaceMakers or Carters or ITM shop nearby? They will be able to supply you with MDF. They will usually cut it to the size (rectangle) you ask for but obviously won't do shaping etc. You could always get a headboard later on or from a s/hand shop and paint it.

You can cut any shape you want (if you have a fairly steady hand) using a jigsaw then paint/decorate it

Also....if you're no good at drawing and can find an outline of the kind of shape you are wanting (flower, butterlfy etc) then you can enlarge the picture onto the MDF using an OHP (over head projector). If you know a teacher then they sould be able to get one for you to use. Hope this helps

Ooooh, I didn't know BSDH might have some clues to give me... LOL. I will ask nicely! I think I can manage to get the MDF on my own and even do what rubydooby suggested and use an overhead projector to trace the design. All I need is some way to cut it! What is a jigsaw, though? And where do I buy a simple bed frame that I can attach a homemade headboard to? Man, this is complicated. I might just have to get the Butterfly bed from Freedom after all!

Hehe Im just designing a castle type bed for addison. A jigsaw is kind of like a sharp vibrating knife that cuts wood (funny that) You can pick them up really cheap from mitre 10 etc.... and they are really easy to use. If you want to go really easy it might be a good idea to get a cheap bed of trade me and just use the base, cut your headboard and sides if you want sides (we have these on kobes bed and it was great cos he couldnt fall out, he has a racing car bed) and then just screw them on and paint it. The headboard and sides will hide the cheap bed base.
