We've been given a Jolly Jumper doorway bouncer, in brand new condition. I've had Jake in it a couple of times and he absolutley LOVES it, he just goes crazy bouncing and laughing. The plunket nurse said they are ok after 5 months of age, and to make sure his feet are flat on the floor and his knees bent to prevent "tippy toe" walking and overdeveloped calves later on.
Today, I was at the DRs with Jake, and was talking to my friends husband (a bit of a manual geek, you know, reads all abut it..) and he went savage at me for using it. I kinda thought it was ok, since the plunket nurse said they are fine (only walkers - which I hate- and changetables so far have had the big no no from her). So what do you guys think? I am fairly comfortable letting him spend a little supervised time in it, and haven't read or heard any horror stories (to be fair, I haven't been looking out for them..) so I thought maybe you guys could all wade in with your opinions!

I love Jolly jumpers! They are such a sanity savor. Tell your friends hubby to go jump (maybe in a jolly jumer himself). He cant tell you what to do with your own child. Im sure there are pros and cons for just about every toy out there. Do what you feel is best!

what was his reason for not liking it? Just out of interest. I had them for the boys (Keegan still fits in it lol) and would put them in doorways (they were right angled to each other if that makes sense) and they loved bounching together. The only thing I dont like about them is i have seen parents put their bubs in them and the bubs heads aren't strong enough for them but other than that go for it. i wish they had adult ones i would have a blast!!!

Me too! They look fun. He loves it, he plays with our dog while in it (a Jack russell) and he can see our huge goldfish, which facinate him.
He mentioned something about making them do stuff before they are devleopmentally ready ( I think he was confusing it with a baby walker, which I "politely" mentioned about parents groups and plunkets getting them banned from next year..) I can't see his point? Maybe the "standing" thing? Jake loves "standing" anyway. I dunno? A bit "weird"? I got the impression he didn't really like me when I was talking to his wife...

what's the difference between doing that and standing them up on your knee bouncing - it's not before they are developmentally ready - at this age plunket nurses reccomend you start doing that sorta thing and letting them stand on your knee and weightbare etc.. not heaps but a little - and as long as baby has good head control and feet are flat then it's all good. I really hate when people develop opinions about things before doing their homework! lol
we had one for paris - borrowed from a friend - i was a bit iffy about it at first cos our door frames aren't the tickest - and i was worried there wasn't much for it to balance on, but it was all good. the only reason i had to stop using it was paris loved it so much and went so bonkers that she would bounce so hard the spring doubled back on itself and i was worried it was gonna come undone.
tell him to jump off the nearest cliff - how rude.

Yeah, he comes across as a bit of a nerd, and VERY scardey cat. Thats all good, though, each to their own. He couldn't understand why I had waited 2 days to take Jake to DR for his runny nose, because, he informed me, we would have taken her (their daughter) STRAIGHT up to the hospital after hours GP, we have her up there at least once a fortnight if we can't get into the DR. Good on ya mate. Good job I never see him, as I really like her, but he gets on my wick!!! (would be a good mate for coffee group bully...)

We had a jolly jumper for our jake and he liked it, but by the time it arrived he was starting to crawl and didn't like being confined to the jumper so much. He did have an exersaucer which he loved.
incidentally my girlfriend's little boy is 5 days younger than Jake and she used a walker and a jumper with him. We didn't have a walker and as I said, barely used the jumper. both boys crawled and walked at the same time

I'm toying with the idea of hiring an exersaucer in the new year. I think he is bored with his baby gyms, gets sick of lying own, he like to be able to see evrythinng thats going on, very nosy!! (like his dad...)

I bought a good, second-hand jolly jumper for Kiya, that now Josiah is using. They both love/d it! AFAIK, you are not supposed to put them in in until they can hold their own heads up, and are bearing weight on their feet. If your kid is already doing this, then go for it! We put a mirror nearby for Josiah, and he has fun with his "friend"!

for both my daughters I had a jolly jumper and a walker and I think both were great Both my girls were prem and my oldest who was born at 30wks(2lb 13oz) was walking at 11 months with absolutely no problem and my 2nd daughter who was born at 36 wks(4lb 11oz) walked at 10 months,i think it is all a matter of personal choice and as long as babies are supervised no harm can come to them

Arna "lived" in her Jolly Jumper - not literally but we would put her in there for about 10 - 15 mins (recommended time) and when we took her out she would SCREAM the house down!! She was taking first steps at 9 1/2 months and walking properly at 10 months.
I would put all my kids in Jolly Jumpers (if I have anymore!) as long as you follow the guidelines and see how your baby is "interacting" with it then there is no problems

Joey loves standing and I am thinking about getting him a jolly jumper for a "christmas present". He is really strong and I know people with babies the same age as Joey (3 months) using them already but I think I will hold off until he is a bit older.

yeah, that would probably be a good idea Ana, - it's hard sometimes to wait - simply because your child just seems so grown up to you, but sometimes they aren't quite ready for some things, even if they are doing others. - like my buggy - i converted to the two seats instead of the toddler seat and baby hammock - and it wasn't until i was up town with ayja in it the other day that i thought - hey, hang on, it's pretty upright - if she falls asleep her chins gonna be on her chest and she won't breathe properly - and sure enuf - she fell asleep - and ended up all crumpled up... so it was a quick trip off to the car to convert it back to the baby hammock so she could sleep lying down.
when paris was in the jolly jumper we used to put books on the floor in front of her so she could look at them, or we would sit a little way from her and roll a ball to her (it's an oversized one - about half the size of a gym ball).. and she would bounce up against it and kick it back to us.

I loved the exersaucers as well, but they are sooo expensive! Saw one at Kmart for $159 - down from $199. it looked pretty cool, but I'd hate to shell out all that cash to find bubs didn't like it. I'm going to hire and see if B2 likes it first and then maybe get one later....yah trademem!!
|
Posted By: mum2paris
Date Posted: 19 November 2005 at 8:48pm
only thing is - most of the ones on trade me go for at least $120 to $150 each anyway - so why not just buy a new one on special? we looked at one for ayja but truth is that she will use one at daycare - and will probably be sick of it when she gets home - although i really would like something to amuse her now - she's sick of playgyms, sick of all her toys and lying on the ground, but can't sit up... roll on xmas when she's bigger and has new stuff to amuse her.

my cousin in wellington hired one from her toy library. I got one FREE from a lady in japan. I would've loved to have brought it back but a bit hard to carry as hand luggage i think!
i think the only thing to watch with stuff like that is that they still have "tummy time"
|
Posted By: fattartsrock

Jake started commando rolling today, so I don't think I have to worry to much about him not getting enough tummy time!
I love the jolly jumper so bugger, the boring manual nerd! I'm not too keen on walkers as my nephew had a horrific accident in one of those down some concrete stairs at about 6 months old, but each to their own, just like nerd man dosent like jolly jumpers!

Rachael, I think it is because a lot of mothers forget to hold on to their child while bending down to pick up nappies or wipes etc and there is the potential for the babe to roll off. They move so damn fast!!!
No matter how careful you are at holding on to the baby there is always the possibility that the one time you forget - then they roll. (Damn murphy and his laws).
I think walkers are great, if properly supervised. But the same goes as for changetables. It only takes a few seconds of your back being turned and the kidlet could be down the stairs. (They move so fast!!!)
Hannah fell down the stairs the other day She knows how to climb so got to the last step (luckily) and fell, so she didn't hurt herself but got a bit of a fright. I have been watching her very closely since then!

Like Nikki said, the rolling off thing. Ours has a safety belt, which I use if I havent bent down to get the nappies before I put him on it. I love it, wouldn't be without it, a real back saver!

the other thing to watch with the wee belt thing - is that it goes over baby's tummy - yeah, and holds them from rolling off maybe... but, the first way most babies learn to move is to get their little feet under them and push off and scoot upwards.. so no little belt thingie is goona stop them scooting up the table and once their head gets over the edge, they're gone off the end... so usually best to get one with some sort of barrier thing at the head end of the table - or place it against a wall - yeah, they'll bang their little head, but not half as bad as if they fell - and beleive me.. from my own experience when ayja fell at 6 days old, a new baby that has fallen head first on the floor is not a pretty sight, nor something any parent should ever have to see.

The change table was a god send especially in the weeks after giving birth as my back and tummy muscles were so weak that it was hard to bend down etc. to change Josef so I have found it definitely worth it. Joey is getting more and more active now though so I have decided to stop using it and go onto the floor but I will definitely be saving it for baby number 2!!

my GF had an incident babysitting, when the baby rolled (for the first time) onto the floor from a change table. He was fine, but she still (10 years later) feels guilty. She worked in a babysotre and they recommended when you get the table to put the side with the "lip" towards you, so they are less likely to fall. Some changing tables have a guard rail thing too.

well i and caitlyn loved her jolly jumper-she went in it all the time.as long as u keep an eye on them its safe -but duh of course we know to keep an eye on them!
and it didnt make caitlyn behind with her milestones or anything-if anything it sped them up-she walked at 9mths and i think it was partly cos of the jolly jumper.
I say if u like it-use it!

Maya loved her JJ was in it from 3 mths, an she was also an early walker. I used to put a tray of warm water under it for her to splash in, or newspaper for her to crunch on. It was great, she was happy to stay in it for up to 1/2 hour at a time.
One warning tho, I did drop her out of it onto the wooden floor and we had to make a dash to Starship. It's much safer to strap baby in then hang it up than to try and put them in it when it's hanging...

That is such a spunky pic of Jacob! I can't get over what a good looking bubba you've got!
I am so clucky right now, everyone wish me luck in bubba number two!!
I found our jolly jumper an absolute godsend, Quinn would frollick around in his for as long as poss, he loved it!! He crawled at 10 months and walked at 13 so I don't think it made a diff developmentally but it was fab. There are always gonna be people who 'frown' on out decisions, the important thing is to do what is right for us!! I remember being in the supermarket when quinn was about five months old and a (grumpy old) woman told me off for letting him sleeping the way he was... I went home and cried like I was the worst mother in the world!! I felt horrid! But in reality, I am doing ok, quinn is happy and healthy and that is important! What right does this woman have to correct me?
The best advice I was given was to accept all advice and then use what you think is relavant! JJ are fab!!

Quinn was always a chubby bubby and people used to be shocked that he was so big, so young like it was a bad thing!! It honestly took me about six months to realise I was doing okay, til then it was regular tears!!
And by the way, of course my baby sleps thru every night, he eats and behaves exactly as i instruct him and although he does not takl he prefers to communicate to us via written language! Yeah right...
Actually, he does not sleep thru, wakes at half five every morning and has recently taken to hitting me but I'll def still be keeping him!!

I had people syaing xander was a "big boy" for his age(he was born 8pd12oz,so on the bigger side) but cos he was my first i didnt really think he was cos i had no other babies to compare him to sizewise.
Now when i see other 2 yr old boys i see he is a wee taller and stockier but not by too much.
I get the same comments about Harmony cos she was born 8pd5oz so only wee bit lighter than her bro.she isnt chubby (bar her cheeks)shes quite long(in sz 0 and almost too long for them)and shes only 61/2 mnths
she slept thru @4mnths old Xander was 6 weeks(bottlefed)when he slept 9 hrs solid overnight.

Jake never slept through until about 6 months, coincidentally when we moved him out of our room. Now I'm sharing with him again and he's waking up at about 10pm, or midnight, pretty much whenever I go to bed. So have decided I defintely wake him up!!!! UNfortunatly no alternative! So will just have to grin and bear it. Grrrrr. Oh well. At least he's cute when he wakes up, crawls into my bed and sleeps straight away...then bashes my face throughout the night. I swear B2 will come out with dents from his big brother (B2 is a boy today)

Aw lizzle i know how that feels. I've been sharing with Hannah since she was born and always wake her up For the last month we have had seperate rooms and it has been great! but now back to sharing at Dads and once again I wake her up.
This morning she woke at 4am - freezing (because she wouldn't go to sleep and kicked all her blankets off earlier in the night.. grr) but atleast I could just pick her up and put her in my bed and she went back to sleep straight away. Then this morning I woke up to her trying to poke out my eyes. The thanks I get!

We share a room when we go to Australia, and Maya plays up so much more than she does here. She wants me to go to bed at the same time as her, and some nights the only way I can get her to settle is to lie on my bed till she falls asleep, whereas at home she knows that she sleeps in her own room in her own bed.
I did get a big fright one night when we were there and I woke up to her asleep next to me (in a single bed - not much room!). I have no idea how/when she got there little monkey.
