I was sure I'd seen threads about this before but now I can't find any of them!
Any tips for flying with babies? I'm taking Alex home to Adelaide in 6 weeks (he'll be 4 months at the time) on my own, and I've never flown with a baby before. It's a 4.5 hour flight with Air NZ. ------------- http://www.bump-and-beyond.com">

I took Tom to Auckland (from CHC) at 5 weeks and had to fly back on my own. I tried to BF him through take off and landing but he just wanted to sleep. However I did find that you need to be super organised and have everything in easy reach as once you have bubs on you you cant go anywhere and there isnt much room.
If you are flying international you can request a bassinet and I think priority is given to younger babies so you should have a good shot! All the flight attendants went gaga over Tom. |

I've flown many a time with baby/ies in tow, I wrote an article on it http://www.ohbaby.co.nz/article.aspx?ContentID=585 - here .
I've always found Air NZ pretty helpful, Qantas are a complete write off! And yes you need to request a bassinette when booking, I've found it helps to call on the morning of your flight (or the day before if it's an early flight) to confirm the bassinette. Also, if you're taking bottles it's best to take just water and add the formula later, that way you can add more cold water if they heat it too hot (in my experience they ALWAYS do!). And ask for them to be heated well in advance of needing them as it can sometimes take them up to 1/2 hour to get them back to you. I've found a frontpack/sling the most useful way of getting around at the airport as these days they won't even let you take an umbrella stroller to the gate. If he is in a capsule take that with you. We carted Andrew around in his when we flew with him and we were able to get a seat for him and he stayed in that for the trip, but that was over 3 years ago now - things have since changed. ------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived! |

We took Hannah to Dunedin and back when she was 6mos. She was in the frontpack and we had our baby bag under the next seat as our carry-on luggage. A few things to hold/play with help, even at 4mos will help, and let him feed for take off and landing to release the pressure in his ears. ------------- |

Don't ask me about flying with babies - still getting over it from Sunday night! 
Both my girls cried and screamed...didn't they Emma! Poor darlings were tired and had sore ears from cabin pressure. Tried feeding Eva while descending but that only worked for a short while and she kept crying. gave her the dummy to suck on as well but that didn't help much...however I suspect it was tiredness that made it worse as she was fine on the way to Wellington. Ella was also...I think because she had been sleeping and was over tired she didn't start 'depressurising' (is that a word?!) her ears at the right time so it built up?? So the lesson: get them yawning or sucking on something when ascending and descending as soon as you know it's happening. Make sure they're not tired...if you can't control that give them a dummy or something to suck on that they won't choke on. Hope that helps! Thanks Ang |

we flew to chch with ella when she was like 2-3 months old....and she was awesome - fed off boobie on way up and down and slept in between!!!
then to oz she was nearly 5 months and we requested a basinette (air nz) - they said no worries as would guarantee it if under 6 months. They were wonderful to fly with - lost stroller at front desk tho in auckland altho in oz they let me take it right to walk on plane so demand to take it and see who you get! I fed her on oz flights too up and down and she was very settled and slept rest of the way. We kept her up in airports to ensure she slept on plane and booked return for night so she would sleep. I also covered her top ear while she was feeding a little just in case. no tips on how to avoid that damn ozzie flu tho sorry!
