Hi All...
I have been reading here for a while, trying to get up the guts to go cloth but still feeling a bit confused! (will blame the breastfeeding brain!) I have a 5 month old little boy (my first child). A trip to the Parents Show on the weekend meant that I got to look at a few MCN's and I purchased a trial 'Real Nappies' and a Honey Child one. Im just wondering a few things... - Can you wash MCN's with other clothes? If you only use half the detergent does that effect the clothes that you are washing at the same time? - How long can you usually leave the nappies in a dry pail before you wash them? - And how do Cloth nappies wear over time? Do they go a bit yucky after a long use? - I have always had a bit of a thing about using natural materials (although I have so far used disposables... go figure?! he hee) and just wondering how hot do baby's get under their MCN's made of things like polarfleece, and do they 'breathe' very well? I wash my nappies with every day clothes etc. I don't even seperate whites or anything like that. Because I use ecostore washing powder I use the recommended amount on the box. - How long can you usually leave the nappies in a dry pail before you wash them? I do washing usually every day, sometimes every second day. I do it this often to prevent them from going super smelly and also cause babies create lots of washing anyway so if I leave my washing any longer I have soooo much to catch up on - And how do Cloth nappies wear over time? Do they go a bit yucky after a long use? Cloth nappies wear really well over time! Mine don't really show their wear at all. I don't find any difference in wear from my expensive ones to my cheaper ones. In fact I'd say that my fleece on my cheaper nappies looks a lil better than my more expensive ones. - I have always had a bit of a thing about using natural materials (although I have so far used disposables... go figure?! he hee) and just wondering how hot do baby's get under their MCN's made of things like polarfleece, and do they 'breathe' very well? I've never noticed Daniels bum getting hot from the fleece material. The outer layer which is most likely PUL is does breathe though, so it shouldn't really be a problem. |

staceys right - if you use ecostore you dont need half the amount for nappies anyway...and you will prob find that most other wahing powders try and get you to use more than you need anyway...
my nappies can stay in the pail for up to 3 days, but i always rinse the pooey ones, and i havent really noticed a bad smell. it depends on how many nappies you have really as to how soon you want to wash them. i dont think they get yucky, sunshine gets rid of most stains....like most things tho eventually elastic may go or the material may get thin...but you will find that wont happen till at least a couple of years of repeated use and washing. with regards to natural fibres and breathability, you dont have to use PUL (which is supposed to be breathable anyway as is most material used to make nappies with) but rather you can use wool covers and the range of fabrics used to make nappies is huge incl bamboo and hemp. |

Thanks girls... much appreciated. Just washing my trial nappies in the machine at the moment. Tried them on my little boy this morning and they looked so cute... think Im hooked already.

I've never had any probs with colours running and I do hot washes (that was until I put a green towel thinging that goes in the baby bath to support baby). Then everything turned a fluro yellow colour. Oooops
But nappies have never harmed anything

Whoops! One of Ollies bibs coloured a whole lot of white stuff blue (and only the trim of the bib was blue... was not impressed!).
Do you have to do hot washes? Or is it ok in cold? Presently I disolve the EcoStore washing powder in a bit of hot water and then just do a cold wash. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I only do hot wash because i got given a flash frontloader that heats the water while washing.. otherwise i would only do cold.. most people on here do cold, and will do a hot was maybe one a fortnight/month :) I have different coloured bumgenius, fuzzis, swaddlebees and one stacey made me and iv never had them run and i wash all the inserts in the same wash :) ------------- ~ Mummy to a beautiful girl ~ |

| hot wash isnt necessaty at all. i very occasionaly do a hot wash otherwise mine all go on warm - and that is everything i wash. |

I wash Astins nappies in with his clothes and i wash every day (sometimes 2 times a day if hes had a particularly output-full day!! ).
We use to do hot washes but it made the stains from his dirty nappies set in a bit more so we started doing cold washes and havnt had any probs so far. Come over to the MCN side! its a beautiful yet addictive side over here!! lol *says she with 22 nappies for 1 baby!!!!!*

I only cold wash and haven't had any issues with stuff running or pilling. ------------- I was a puree feeder, forward facing, cot sleeping, pram pushing kind of Mum... and my kids survived! |

I am so excited now... my nappies just finished washing and I couldnt believe how dry the covers already were straight out from the machine!

I only have one thing to add about the heat, in MCNs they are actually a couple degrees cooler than disposables and a lot more breathable. Plus there are no icky chemical in MCNs.

As to how long they last, I bought my first lot of Fuzzis about 15mos ago and have been washing them most days. They are a little bit stretched and the fleece definitely looks more worn than my newer ones, but there is absolutely no problem with their use and I reckon I have at least another year's use in them. -------------  |
