Ok, so I have changed my name on my bank acc's. Do I need to ring IRD or are they all lined up with Births deaths marriages? Should I change my drivers liscence? it has 3 years to go on it. Does anyone know the cost? I will change my passport soon as it runs out next year and we are off on a belted honeymoon to Fiji before then. What else who else to tell??? HELP???

Basically, tell everyone who has your details with your maiden name. Assume nothing! You will have to ring IRD yourself... it costs something like $32 to get a replacement drivers licence (straight replacement card, with new name), up to you if you do it now or wait until it expires. ------------- Becca, mum of 2 girls & 3 boys |

With regards to the holiday I think you just need to take a copy of your marriage certificate so that you can confirm the name difference between passport and tickets. -------------

Just make CERTAIN when you travel that the name on your air tickets match your passport, and carry your passport as identification if your driver's licence has a different surname. If you want to change things like the name on your bank account or credit cards, you will need to take your marriage certificate into the bank and show someone in order to do so, so don't put it in a frame just yet... Oh and you can photocopy your marriage certificate and then get them certified for free at the local court house. -------------

i promised DH i would change things (except work) when they expired....licensed expire about 6 months later...bugger! passport yet to expire but we will change that before we do big travel plans again.
photo copy off your marriage cert and any solicitor or JP or front desk of court should do it for free.... |

Thanks guys. I already have been at the bank with the wedding certiicate, so just the other things to do. Liscence expires in 3 years, I hardly ever use it for ID, so I might just leave it, but my passport expires in march next year, so it will be renewed before we traveln married name.

As your drivers licence and passport are the main forms of acceptable id, these will need to be changed.

You're still legally entitled to use both names. So once you remember what Id you'll be using for what then you it's all sweet.
My passport is still in my maiden name and I just travel under that name. I flown once under my married name and my marriage certificate was enough to cover that. Also only having residency in NZ I have to show my passport numerous times to verify my residency and I've never had any problems. That's with my passport showing my shortened first name & maiden name and my marriage cert showing my official first name & married name I do like to be awkward

| I have changed my name, but hardly changed ANY ID - mainly because my ID still had 3-4 years on both of them (drivers licence and passport). The main problem I've had is your signature - if you change your signature, people like to have an official copy of that somewhere. I've also had to register at a few places (ie NZ blood service) under my maiden name, as that's the only ID I have. I have seriously been considering changing my licence, cos it CAN be a hassle sometimes. |

I changed everything ... DH would have sulked if I didnt lol, luckily they let me keep the same photo on my drivers licence, as I actually looked good in it! ------------- Mummy to Issy (3) and Elias (18 months) I did it .. 41 kgs gone! | One thing I always have is a copy of my marriage license (signed by a JP).. that way if I ever have anything in my old name that I've forgotten to change I've got proof.. its handy, I've used it a couple of times |

It's been a while now but I do remember that it took about 6months to get everything sorted. The utility companies were the worst!
Definitely don't assume anything! IRD are as useful as tits on a bull most of the time. I travelled with my birth cert and my passport but I can't remember whether my tickets were in my married name or my passport name - I would check that with the airline since you should be using your legal name which would be your married name I think. -------------

you have to travel in the name on your passport...no exceptions! It used to be that you could get your passport endorsed with your married name, but thats no more.
I got married at the start of 06 and still have no photo id under my married name which I now use. I changed my name on with the banks and at IRD. With IRD I use their internet service so just advised them on that. Ive hardly had to use my marriage licence as i don't often have to show id. My passport is still valid for another 8 years so Im not changing that. its no big deal to travel in my maiden name. Names at accommodation can still be the married name, just the tickets cant. Ill change my drivers licence at some stage. sounds like you'll be fine as you are changing your passport before you travel and its not long until you'll have some photot id. I would leave the drivers licence, someone said above that your ID should be in your legal name, well guess what... married ladies have 2! So yay less work until you can actually be bothered changing them. Why pay more money into the money-hungry govt dept's than you have to? 
All I've changed.. utilities (we moved after we were married so no issues), insurance (fine), bank (just took in marriage licence (not certificate)), uni (licence). I just travel on my maiden passport too, there's no way I'm getting a new one cos I've got about 7 years left on it and I think the new chipped ones (compulsory) only last for 5 years and cost twice as much. |

| Man you are on to it quick. I am slowly getting round to it. Have changed one bank account, sent a copy of marriage licence to my registration board for work and thats about it. Drivers licence needs renewing next month so will change that then. The hardest thing is the new signature/ |

as far as travelling i got told I would have to have passport and tickets in same name.. and we just paid extra 24$ (if you got married in last year which you did ) to get a proper copy of marriage cert as i thought the one we signed at wedding was legal one for changing but it wasn't....I haven't changed drivers license but i must do that.. apparently better to have both changed.. I've had a few issues since getting married when not having ID in the name I gave.. as you are legally always your maiden name..it's stupid..just cause you marry doesn't legally make the other name your name it makes no sense to me:( ------------- Mum to two amazing boys! |

I left my driver's licence for almost a year and didn't have any problems. Signature, you'll remember both for the next three years so no prob. Just keep a copy of that certified marriage cert handy like everyone else said -------------  |

Cathrine interesting what you say about your signature, I don't think I've used my full signature for anything for ages. Everything's a 4 digit pin.

Kawwwwww - I didnt know that about the marriage cert. I also assumed the one we got at the ceremony was the "true" document. That might be why the JP looked at me funny when she certified copies. Oh well, it worked for the bank

| Yeah, you sign the certificate in your maiden name - however it's "proof" enough that your name (and therefore your signature) has changed. I've had problems with setting up out trusts etc in the last year and a half, they like to see photo ID, and all mine says old name! Not good when it's for your future children and you want it to be YOUR family trust IYKWIM? Also the bank had a hissy fit one day about not having proof of my signature, weird, as changed my name with them at the start. |

nzpiper yeah i didn't know either..i went to the bank with the one i signed at the wedding and she said oh no not that one...send away for one(which i discovered just now i could have just got that other one certified) but now we have one like a birth certificate that i can take places with me..but would just be easier if i got my license done as well:) even though its got 5 years to run!
