I'm going to apologise in advance if this post gets disjointed and rambly, I've done virtually nothing all day bar some shopping and cook dinner, and I'm exhausted.

Anyway, I got a maternity bra today - my boobs are HUGE ! And yeah, I know they'll just get "huge-er" LOL

It's quite a nice one, by Bendon, in black because I didn't want a nana colored one :P It should see me right through.

So my question is, when did you ladies buy your first maternity bra? I know some people don't buy one until 6-8 weeks out from when they're due, but my normal ones were getting uncomfortable, and I figured it would be easy to invest in at least one now, and maybe another one later.

And since I can never hold back when I go shopping (well, almost never !), and because I finally found the perfect way to tell my mum, I picked up a couple of other things as well.

At Baby Factory I found these plain terry towelling newborn bibs for $2 each, and then took them to be embroidered - one with "I "heart" Grandma" ("heart" being the actual shape of a heart) for my mom, and another with "I "heart" Grandpa" for my father in law to be. It's his birthday on Thursday, so the timing could not be better !! I am of course a little nervous as to how he will react, but not as nervous as how mum might go :P I am telling her on Friday, the day after my FIL's bday.

I also picked up another book, 'Up the Duff' by Kaz Cooke. I really like her quirky sense of humor and had actually read it before. Anybody else have it? If so, what did you think?

And to top it all off, I couldn't resist these adorable little newborn booties when I was looking at bibs - they have the cutest yellow duckies on them and yellow piping with white fabric.

That's all I bought, I swear !!

I just had a nice warm bath (not too hot, I promise)... didn't stay in long as I was worried about falling asleep ! Lots of bubbles though which was nice.

Take care ladies and look forward to your responses !

Jax

I bought my first maternity bra when I was on my way past the Bendon Factory shop at 23 weeks. Purely because it was $10 for a really nice bra! (truly hideous hot-pink colour tho - I'm just not a pink kinda girl. But given that no one special was going to see it, I didn't mind!)

Anyway... was advised to buy 2 cup sizes from my normal size and it was perfect. Had already moved up a cup size being pregnant.

So yeah, that's it. I ended up with 3 useable maternity bras (and one for when I was washing). The Bendon was the nicest by far so almost worth paying extra (or making a stop at the factory shop)

While you might only need one bra now, you will need more later as leaking boobs mean that your bra will end up smelling like old milk. Not so pleasant!

Mmmmm rambly ramble.

Good luck with telling the news. I think the way your doing it sounds really special.

I brought my maternity bras about 3 weeks before i gave birth.

I loved reading up the duff. And read the chapters weekly to keep up with what she was writing. I read it with my second pregnancy. With my first i read what to expect when your expecting. I like Kaz Cookes much better.

Hi. I just loved shoppnig for bubba stuff. It's annoying not to go shopping this time, but figured we have so much stuff from jake, we should wait and see if B2 is a boy or girl, then i can shop.

I buoght my first materinity bra just before I had Jake I think. And they are hideous. I'm going to wait until the big sales after boxing day and perhaps get some more. I breastfed for four months, three months exclusive, but this time, may continue longer as I'll be home longer. I need some nice ones.

I bought my maternity bras about 10 weeks out, before that I wore comfy sports bras.

I had the book too and loved it!! I would always read the relevant chapter before getting up in a Saturday morning as that was my ticking over into the next week day...

"they" reckon your boobs wil have got as big a they are going to (untill your milk comes in...) by about 35 weeks, I think. I wore sports bras from when I found out, as mine were SORE, but I didn't actually grow at all, just got a little "fuller".
I got a nice hot pink jobbie from loveable, and a nice triumph one that was only $26 - cheap for a maternity bra! October/november little treasure mag had a good article about bras, and all the dos and don'ts etc, and showed some ones that head been test driven (including my beloved loveable one).

I love the bibs, what an awesome idea!1 Cute booties, as well. One book I read, and loved was Belly Laughs, the naked truth about pregnancy by Jenny McCarthy (you know, the funny playboy scary movie 3 chick..)it was very very funny!!!

I've read Belly Laughs before too, and now that you've mentioned it I might get it out from the library and have another go.

So far my boobs have gone up a whole cup size, which is quite scary considering I'm only 2 months !

And Jezsika, they stipulated my due date as July 8th - what was yours ?

Lol i bought my maternity bra's from the outlet shop clearance sale at Bendon in Westgate about a month ago... If you bought 2, you got 1 free, and they were $30 each. Was worth paying that... they're REALLY nice bra's, and soooo comfortable. Lol they almost didnt have my size cuz i was 18DD before i got preggers (and im only 17!!!!)

I didn't get my maternity bras until I was 4 weeks off my due date.
My sister in law got hers at about 16 weeks pregnant & started wearing them straight away. Although they are comfortable, she ended up having to buy new ones straight after her daughter was born because they had stretched from her getting bigger & because they had worn out a little by the time she actually gave birth.
To be honest I wouldn't bother buying maternity bras yet, just buy a couple of really nice supportive bras that will hold them in place and leave the maternity ones for when you will actually be breastfeeding...

Has anyone else had the problem of not finding maternity bras very supportive? I kind of miss underwires abit. And I have a long way to go before I can throw all those maternity bras in the bin!

I bought maternity bras only after quinn was born. I foolishly thought I wouldn't bother!! That didn't last long!! For most of my pregnancy I wore sports bras, and after birth I often wore those sports bra crop top things...

I found that in the first few months of preg my breats ballooned to about three times the usual size and then they slowed down a bit but after he was borna and my milk came in they just got massive!!

Up the duff is great! I read it right through when I first found out I was preggers, then week by week.

I bought my bras a month or so before my due date.

On the topic of bras - how long do you need to use nursing pads for? I tried sleeping without a bra (and pads) the other night but ended up in a wet mess! Even if I do wear a bra the pads move in the night and sometimes still end up wet! Have tried some with adhesive on the back but they fill up too quickly.

Hi Aimee. I'm afraid you will need those nursing pads until your supply settles down, which can take awhile. I think Alex was about 5 months old before I got away with not using them any more. I used the washable ones at night and sometimes stuck a couple in just in case. But for me I spent the first 3 months after Alex's birth sleeping on a towel! Sorry! Not much help I know.

I've looked at bras and need to get some but the whole, being DD before being "up the duff" is a bit rough. I think I'm an F now so I'm stuck with my sports bras and they are getting uncomfortable.

I'm considering going straight to maternity bras and hopeing that if I get them a little too big, my breasts won't grow too much bigger...... I'm only 12 wks but I figure I can always hope.

I bought "Oh Baby" written by a kiwi the other day, just started it but quite good so far.

I used the woolen washable breast pads and found them fantabulous!! Aside from the initial milk-coming-in explosion I never had any leaks and they were so comfy!!
They are about $14, have a look at http://www.breastmates.co.nz/

I'm thinking of getting some of those woollen ones. At the mo have hubby sending me the big boxes of pigeon ones from Japan. Costs me about $15 for 144!!! Much cheaper even when factoring in postage. HATED johnson and johnson pads.

I used J&J, they were useless but fit into my budget and better than the Treasures ones. I finally bought some Tommee Tippee washables and they were awesome, but by that stage I just about didn't need them.

i think pretty much every breast pad leaks in the first few months. there is nothing that can stop the spray of milk!
i slept in a towel until hannah was atleast 4 months old and stopped using breastpads when han was about 6 months, though i had to make sure i held one nipple while she was feeding from other as it would leak as well. when han was about 9 months i stopped leaking altogether.

Am now a bit grossed out with the J&J ones. You know how disposable nappies can leave little crystals when hey get really wet, well so do the nursing pads Just noticed this morning. Must have got real full overnight.

hhhm i always have found themgreat - but yeah, i think every breast pad leaks when it gets too full, and most separate - but i found the treasures ones too flimsy and they did nothing! swear by j&j, apart from the fact they can be seen through most clothing. tried a sample of the pigeon ones the other day - which i thought were good, but wasn't too sure about the tape on them to stick to the bras, i mean it's a good idea, but your boobs don't always stay in the same place

I got told to buy a maternity bra from 37weeks onwards, So I did, but when my milk came in it was too small!! I went from being a B/C cup to a DD!!!!! I just brought one from Farmers, I think it was about $27.00 and Its Great! better then the $10.00 ones I brought :P

Also just a warning... They Stretch!!

I swear by the Johnsons ones too(Tryed the Treasures ones and had to wear 3 at one time to stop 'leaking' LOL), but maybe I should look into getting some washable ones... might save a bit of money!

I really liked those washable ones. Mainly coz they saved me some money! ANd I found them really easy to wash. I just took them in the shower with me every morning then put them on the window sill to dry. I'm pretty sure they are machine washable to but I just found it easier doing it my way.
I don't think they would have held up the first month when my supply was crazy but I don't think ANYTHING could have stopped those leaks then. I swear I could have stuck a maternity pad onto each boob & I still would have leaked through

I ended up buying two packs because I was going through 3 pairs in one day with my leaking. Everytime I fed from one side the other side would start squirting. I ended up feeding Alex one side & expressing from the other side and I didn't even have to pump it it just flowed into the bottle!
