Subject: Which brand of nappies?
Date Posted: 28 November 2005 at 1:42pm
Hello
Forgive me if this is an old topic - I did do a seach and couldn't see anything ..
I am 7 months pregnant, and as suggested (by everyone!) I am buying disposable nappies when they are on special. However, there are so many brands to choose from - no only at the supermarkets, but online too! Could I get some feedback from mums as to which ones they liked best and why? I'm having a boy. Also, how many should I get of the newborn? 100? 200? 500? 1000?
Many thanks

Hi! Welcome to ohBaby!
My baby is 5 weeks and she has already outgrown newborn size - she was 8lb 5 born. So itsprobably best not to buy too many, espcially if they think bubs is going to be big.
Hannah wears cloth nappies most of the time, but I have foung Huggies are more leakproof, esp at night and better at containing her explosive runny poos! Oh, the things you have to look forward too!!
Also theres been a few of us discussing cloth nappies in another thread if you are interested called 'My foray into cloth nappies'.

I wouldn't get too many of the newborn size. I got about 100 and my son had outgrown them by the time I managed to squeeze the last one over his bottom (he was a big boy though 9lb 2 born).
I stuck with Treasures & Huggies to start with, once he was in a routine I was able to use "day nappies" & "night nappies", which were good old Budget for the day time & Huggies or Treasures at night (whichever was on special!)

I usually go to www.babyonline.co.nz and buy Air nappies... I have found them to be everything I need in a nappy!!
I can't even remember how many newborns nappies I bought, but I do remember Quinn outgrew them pretty fast, if I had my time again I would prob buy mostly the next size up, it makes more sense to go out and buy more newborns if you need them rather than have oodles left over?!

I have just tried babylove nappies, and HATED them. they have this gel in it that takes the wetness away from bubs bum, but letf Jake covered in jelly stuff....ick.
Basic ones were okay, but the sizes said 8-15kg. Jake is 12 and it was a little tight to put on.
Mum bought Huggies, which were okay. Am now using treasures giggles - no problems.
Don't necessarily go for the cheapest because you may find yourself having to use more - thus actually making them more expensive!
I'd say get some ultra-absorbant for night times, but maybe later when bubbs is sleeping through the night. Jake soaks his and wakes up a sodden cold messs. Ick

We had about 8 packs of newborn naps, and I still have 3. I also bought small nappies treasures giggles and ultra have a 4 - 7 kg size, which lasted longer than the beginners. I found jake peed thru the giggles, so used huggies at night, although treasures ultra are quite good as well, I like the "fittedness" of the huggies, esp round the legs. I heard that Air is great as well. Go to www.babyonline.co.nz, they have great specials.

we use huggies at night and giggles during the day. but in saying that when the huggies are gone i'm getting the air ones from the online shop. i've used them before and are better than huggies. sometimes jacks bum is covered in crystal-like stuff from huggies naps. i used giggles until he was sleeping through the night as he was being changed/fed so often.
i'm not sure how many newborn packs i had but as jack was only 5pd 12oz he was in newborn size for along time! if you end up with too many you can always take the unopened packs to the supermarket and swap them for bigger ones.
well that's my novel finished

At the moment I use Pams (not the ultra) and they are great. They always cost around $6.30 which is the cheapest and best quality I've tried.
I don't like Budget as they gave Ella nappy rash and I didn't like the gel that Baby Love left either.
I think that Treasures Giggles and Pams are the best for quality/price.

The Budget nappies have changed now. my friend who works in the supermarket industry said the Budget range (in all goods be it nappies or tinned tomatoes) get put up for tender(?) every 2-3 years and they have just changed them in the last couple of months. They are more like a treasures giggles nappy now (so am wondering if treasures are doing them) and are only $5.50 a packet. also have gone from using a large to a med. Anyway i use huggies for night time at my boys are major pee machines and these are the only nappies that keep them dry and they fit really great as well.
I guess really its down to trial and error. I found that as i had friends who swear by naps i hated and vice versa. Good luck

I have always gone between
Huggies (Mainly night time cause of price - to expensive to use during day!)
Cosies (from www.babiesonline.co.nz) about $60 for 144 (work out to be about 32c each) and
Treasure Giggles (have been using these at night - but only in the last few months @ 15 months)

I was a nappy snob, I only used Treasures Ultra on Maya for the first 2 years. Could afford it tho because I only used them at night and used cloth during the day.
I'm not a big Huggies fan, I find I always need to buy up a size (Maya is 14.75kg and wearing the 15-18kg sz) because they are cut quite short and she is quite long. I have recently started using the Air nappies and they are great too.
Treasures Giggles used to be good too, but now that she is bigger she wets right thru them at night.
As for newborn naps, I only bought 2 packets, and just as well as they never fit her that well. She was also a 9lber and went pretty much straight into the Treasures Ultra small size. Giggles now come in small too which is cool, they weren't around when Maya was tiny.

I love huggies they are so fantasic for boys except for that gell stuff, but I don't think that is much of a problem. Treasure ultra are really good with new born, deffently don't buy too many as you won't need them all, but if you do over stock most supermarkets will be willing to exchange them for the next size as long as the packets are undamaged.

Used giggles and treasures ultra a few times when han was little and she used to leak like hell.
Found huggies were the only ones that didn't leak.
Would only buy them on special tho. Couldn't afford to be paying $15 a packet.
Mmmhmmmmm... that's it. (i'm tired. losing my brain)

We use to use giggles all the time, however they say they are for daytime use only and as I have found out a few times it is because they pee more at night so they leak! Bailey was 7lbs at birth and we must have gone though at least 10-15 packets of newborns!!!!!
We now use Giggles during the day and Huggies at night

If Arna has 2 bottles before bed (her milk and then one of water) then she totally wets through the giggles! But if she has a bottle at say 4pm (by bottle I mean her straw cup!! Old habit I guess) and then one with her dinner she is fine...
I am the same as you Emma, Huggies I buy the next size up - otherwise the tabs don't go around properly and she wets in about 10 mins (out the side).
Also used Budget for about 2 weeks but then Arna got a BAD nappy rash - still have some sitting in the closet collecting dust... And tried babylove a couple of times - thought they were great as she didnt wet through them - until I changed her and had to give her about 2 - 3 baths a day to get the jelly stuff off (I hate that stuff!!)
End of novel...

Isn't it funny how everyones experiences are so different!!? I LOVE Huggies, it is all I use. Joey just wees through anything else. He was 7lb 13oz at birth and only used 3 packs of newborn nappies before he had to go up a size so I wouldn't go overboard buying newborns but might pay to stock up on the next size up???

Interesting everyones comments on Babylove. I tried them once when we were in Australia (you can't get Treasures there) when Maya was 8 weeks old and hated the plasticky smell so I never bought them again. Then I just recently saw them advertising a new design and new grip tabs etc. and was thinking about trying them.
But after what everyone else has said, I won't bother.

i use nannys nappies (avalible from nappies for less) during the day, and huggies at night, i'd like to use huggies all the time, but can't afford to!! nannys are pretty good and cheap!! i found treasures total rubbish, the giggles gave her the worst rash & the ultra leaked every time.

I have found that buying a box of huggies works out cheaper then the packets we will buy one box ever 2 weeks and they lasts longer I just hate getting close to running outhowever whe have been running very low so I grabbed a packet of treasure ultra from my MIL ( we stashed them there ages ago) and I have used then for 3-4 days and Alan has got nappy rash for the first time in age's I think I would rather the jelly stuff in his bum from the huggies so I am deffently going to stick to huggies!

Although my hubby ( ) worked out if you buy a box of huggies at normal price then it is cheaper to get 4 packs (what we need for 2 weeks) at normal countdown price (around $11) and you get 6 nappies extra - that's only for our size though, just thought I'd share.... man it's embarrasing being married to scrooge... especially when he is standing in front of the shelves at the supermarket with his calculator working it out.... (I do love him, really...)

my grandfather argues about the prices with the checkout girls
"these mushrooms are 2 cents cheaper at Pak N save. what are you going to do about it?"
I have vowed NEVER to go shopping wtih him.
That said, I am the same as your hubby. work it out with the calculator, but you have to take quality into account.

actually, just had a question, jake is soaking through his so-called "night-time nappies" that i bought him. Another pee-machine. What does everyone use at night? I was trying to be cheap, but cheap has so far equaled more washing, so not that much cheaper I think!

i tried to be cheap with the boys but in the end had to go with huggies for night time and they are always on special if not at one supermarket than at another. i just keep and eye on the flyers that come out (at the mo new world has them $10.99 until xmas although i know pak n save have great specials on them too) i tried the treasures ultra but they just peed straight thru them and they feel thinner than the huggies. just reading thru the other posts on here it seems lots of ppl like the huggies for night time

Huggies @ Warehouse are two packets for $19 at the moment, but Pak'n'Save usually has them on special for around $7-$8. They suit Arna for nighttime - just have to watch their sizes (Arna is short and round!)

i just bought pams ultra-dry last night to try them out as an alternative to huggies. i don't like the crystals that you get with them. i figured the pams cherish ones are good (daytime) so their night ones might be too. haven't used them yet but will let you know.
they were on special for $7.50 or thereabouts at pak n save. huggies aren't on special there this week, i'm so annoyed they don't do pamphlets anymore. hehe junk mail is my life

At the risk of sounding extravagant, have you thought about putting a larger size one on top of the regular size one t nigh time? I noticed ages ago ont he little treasures site they were recomending this for pee amchines like our boys! Jake hasn't gone through huggies yet, though!!

Also, on the subject of scrooges, when I was at uni, my grandad died, and I went up to CHCH for the funeral and left my toothbrush behind. I made the mistake of asking mum to buy me a new one (poor student) in front of dad, who not only flipped his lid, but gave me a clean thin facecloth to use instead so I didn't have to et a new one!!!!
Dad is a notorious scrooge!!
Mum bought me a new toothbrush on the sly, btw!!

OR - get a cloth night nappy. i am into rosies AIO at the mo. bubs bum was dry, it didnt smell of pee and wasnt soggy like some others or his disposable. and it dried quickly on the line. and hubby had no probs putting it on.

Just been reading all your nappy tips. I use a nappy called "Sealer" which is an asian nappy I buy through nappyhouse.co.nz. If you buy in bulk they work out at around 27c each. We have tried heaps however I can't compare these to any others, we have no leaks they fit my big boy really well(8mths 11kg and we use large) we have no rash, gel etc. If you email the company they will send samples of their nappies. I used each one at night to really test them out. I sound like an advertisemnet for them :)
