Hi, I'm wondering if someone might be able to help me. My 21 month old son wakes up in the mornings (after an 11-12 hour sleep) in a very happy mood. However, he has 1 sleep during the day, usually from about 12 until 2.30 or so, and when he wakes up from this he is a MONSTER! He's very very grumpy, angry, tearful - you name it - everything except happy! I can't change his happy, and he won't eat or take a drink, he wants to cuddle but when you do he wants to be left along - a real tantrum.

Today it lasted for an hour and it upsets our whole afternoon.

What could be causing this? He has lunch before he goes down, so I know he'e not hungry ...

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers

No suggestions sorry but Elle is the same. Wakes happy but as soon as she gets up cries for anything from 10mins to an hour...happens first thing and after each nap. No idea why.

i have a grumpy waker here too...

I do know that for toby there is a cut off time in the afternoon where if he wakes after that time he is a nightmare... maybe your son needs to have an earlier and longer nap...
or maybe if lunch is too close to his nap he is getting a tummy ache?

That's a really interesing observation GandT. I think we might have that afternoon sleep issue here too. Hmmmm...something to consider.

I think some kids just like to be cuddled for a while until they fully wake. I guess just like adults some wake feeling good and some wake feeling yuck (I know I always feel like the living dead when I wake up)

James wakes up grumpy to at sometimes either because he hasn't slept enough and will sleep when I put him back down.

Other times I'm not sure but seems to calm down after a while I just normally cuddle him till he starts chatting away then we go and play.

Briona is the same. I don't bend over backwards but I do offer a cuddle, drink and something to eat as soon as she is up. Usually that makes her come right but otherwise I put her back to bed. I find she gets up basically as soon as she wakes but if she can lie in for 10 minutes before getting up it actually improves things a lot.
