Gaviscon forms like a plug, stopping it from coming back up

Ranitidine stops stomach acid production (to a certain extent)

Yep, and Losec (omeprazole) is the other one that stops the production of stomach acid.

Do you give him ranitidine by itself or with milk? I use to just shove it in his bottle with like 50ml of milk, only way I could get it into him

Yeah, we had omeprazole in a suspension liquid for a while and it was a disaster for the same reason you said. Now we have it in capsules and we break the capsule open, pour the granules onto his tongue (this is on recommendation from my plunket nurse) and then feed him right away so he swallows them down. Works a treat and he's quite happy with it.

Iv just been giving it to him off a spoon then holding him right back until he swollows it otherwise hel hold it in his mouth until i sit him up then hel spit it out!! . we tried giving it to him in his bottle but he could taste it and would screw his face up and not take that bottle so it seems easier to do it the quick way

I asked the doc if we could have the losec in powder form to mix with apple at my plnuket nurses request but he said that he had never heard of that before so would only give me the suspension!

http://www.cryingoverspiltmilk.co.nz/MedicalTreatment/Medication-QuickOverview.htm - Crying Over Spilt Milk - Medication Quick Overview
Ranitidine (Generic Name)
Zantac (Trade Name)
Use: Histamine H2-receptor antagonist.
Ranitidine reduces the amount of stomach acid produced and thus prevents reflux causing inflammation in the oesophagus, and also allows existing inflammation to heal. It does not decrease the amount of spilling or vomiting.

Omeprazole (Generic Name)
Losec (Trade Name), Prilosec (Trade Name in other countries)
Use: Proton pump inhibitor
Omeprazole is an alternative for babies/children who do not respond to Ranitidine, and has been used in children in New Zealand since the early 1990’s. It turns off most of the pumps that are responsible for stomach acid production. This allows for inflammation in the oesophagus to heal. Omeprazole will not decrease the amount of spilling/vomiting.

I was actually given the tip to give Losec granules (from the caps) with Watties baby pears. The fruit is sweet, it has vitamin c in it for quicker absorption and pears has got the lowest amount of fruit acid in it. This has worked really well for us for the past year

Perhaps print off this:

And show it to him and give him the name of the sight. Sounds like he is being a little ignorant to your needs!

yep i agree with peace. Also it pays to avoid giving losec with milk as the milk counteracts the activity of it (needs something acid ie pear or apple to set it off) So if you give it with milk you may need more of the losec to get the same result as you would with a lesser dose activated with pear or apple.
