We went on a tour of the maternity unit at NSH last night. All looks good but when I got home I realised I should've asked the guide this question:
Does anyone know if you can actually give birth in one of the birthing pools or are they simply for "pain" relief during labour? Any experiences appreciated. Thanks  -------------

You can birth in them definitely but there are only two of them... or at least when I was there! And wouldn't ya know it they were both being used  ------------- Mum to Alex (11), Blaire (10) & Erika (8) and Damien (6) Successful HWB VBA2Cs! Soon to be surrogate |

I think there's 3 pools now (but I could well be wrong). I will definitely be discussing it with my MW when I see her next. I have no idea what her thoughts on it might be. And like you say Toni, you can't get your heart set on it as all the pools might be in use when you rock up  -------------

you can't always be sure that water is what you will want either, I got up to use the pool, but was more content gripping the sink in the room!   ------------- ">

Good point SB. I was thinking that very thing the other night when I was in the bath. It felt too hot & made me feel slightly faint after I got out. I'll just play it by ear on the day and of course you won't be able to use the pool if you need a drip or anything like that I presume? -------------

I was the same as SB....I acutally found the pool wasn't for me and was happy to get out! hehehe

I used the pool at NSH for pain relief, but only lasted about 30 minutes in it, as I felt abit faint and uncomfortable. Again pool use is on a first in basis. Your MW also needs to be happy to deliver in water (not all MW will), and there can't be any complications. ------------- http://alterna-tickers.com">

There is always time to talk him around especially if your m/w thinks you are a candidate...your last birth was straight forward wasn't it? So that would bode well. I'd secretly wish I could home birth but I'll settle for managing a VBAC!! ------------- http://lilypie.com">

The showers in the birthing rooms are really good during labour too. Really nice pressure on your back and rails to lean on during contractions.
