One of Spencers eyes is a bit gunky, isn't red or anything and he isn't rubbing it or bothered at all, it is just getting a little build up of green mucousy stuff. He had it when he was newborn as well and midwife got me too put breastmilk in his eyes which cleared it up brilliantly but can't do that now so...
Would cold tea help?
and do you think it could be something serious or can they just get gunky eyes?

Cheers

if its conjunctivitis then i dont think cold tea will help...a trip to the docs might be in order.

Wipe it away with a tissue (and throw it away straight away). If it comes back really quickly then take a trip to the dr to get something for it.

I cleared his eye about 3 hours ago and it has only just built up again. Why do these things always happen on a Friday?
I don't think it is conjunctivitis, think will leave it and can always take him to doc tomorrow. Is only $10 to get seen at the on call surgery.

Hi there,
Sounds like your little one has got a blocked tear duct. My son had it from birth until 11 months - has only just cleared up in the last month or so. You can use saline drops (from pharmacy) and squirt into the eye with a couple of drops and wipe away with a bit of cotton wool. The other thing that I used to do quite often is get a cloth and put some sterlised water onto it and wipe the eye with that. Hope it clears up for him soon.

Daniels eye does that fairly regularly .. I just go to the docs and get some eye drops and it clears up within a couple of days. Saline drops never work for us.

Ollie had it too when he was newborn. My midwife advised using breastmilk which worked a treat, but also suggested cooled boiled salted water - which would avoid having to pay for saline.

Hope it clears up

Yup, had it here too. One cup of cooled boiled water and one teaspoon of salt - dip a corner of a flannel into solution and wipe the eye...massaging the corner of the eye (the skin between the nose bridge and eye) can unblock it eventually. If that doesn't work get some drops from the doc

I'd use cooled boiled water in a dropper for the weekend, and if it's not clear by Monday make an apmt then for medicated drops.

I have some saline eye wash in first aid box so have used a little bit of that on it. I don't think his duct is blocked as there are still tears coming out, unless its partially blocked?

Oh, my baby has had the same thing for the last couple of weeks. I went to the doc (twice) and he just said its not conjunctivitus so dont worry about it. I was talking to a plunket nurse today and she said that it was probably a blocked tear duct (like yours) and to massage it with your little finger, and keep cleaning with a tissue and clean water to try and unblock it. I think that if they dont clear they can get infected ... She said saline and eye drops wouldnt do anything special, and that if its still a problem by the time they are 18months or so that you can get it cleared medically.

Thanks Bazlib, seems to be better today there has been no gunk, so i'm hoping the saline cleared whatever it was. He has his 5 month check up this week so will speak to doc about it then as well
