We received a letter reminding us janaya is due for her 4 year old shots... she still hates me from the last time i took her now, do i tell her the truth well before i take her, and drag her kicking and screaming to the doctors.. or do i lie, and spring it on her at the last minute and have her never trust me again... the last time i took her she was a bit young to understand.. but now she is very much aware and knows how much they hurt.. does anyone have any ideas? this prob wont help...but when i had to go for my b12 shots, df used to bribe me. i knew upfront though lol.

| I would be upfront with her, tell her why she gets them (to keep her healthy etc and make sure she grows big and strong), keep telling her she's such a brave girl and that you're very proud of her, and tell her that for being such a brave girl after the shots she can have a special treat. Maybe sit down and talk to her about it well in advance. If she gets scared of the doctor and vaccinations from an early age, she may well carry that on into later life. |

my mum was upfront with me about my shots and stuff....and i am still terrified of the doc and getting shots, and im 21!!! although i am getting better now.....although blood tests are what really get to me as my blood doesnt really come out(at least 15 mins to get one really small vial...normally about 20-30 mins)....

I explained to Kiya what was going to happen, and why... we talked about the importance of them and how it was going to hurt... and I told her that if she was a brave girl I would buy her a treat afterwards. Oh, and I let her take her teddy, "to cuddle just in case, Mummy". After we left the doctors we went to the dairy just down the road and I let her choose a small reward (she wanted a lollypop) and that was it! Just what I'd do... but I'd give her a dose of pamol before going (as you would a baby) and let her know that this will take most of the pain away but not all of it... that might allow her to be a bit braver about the whole thing if she has some 'help'... and then bribe her with lollies. haha
And if you are anti-medicating and anti-lollies then I'm out of ideas!!

I hate needles too, you wouldn't think so after 3 kids and a c/s lol.
My plan for Hannah will be to explain to her that it's a little prick to help her not get "lots sick" and that when we've finished (not dependent on not crying or being brave or anything) we'll all go get icecreams, and I'll get her a choc dip or something for special. -------------  |
