I really need to get this off my chest, so you have been warned! This is a major vent!
Josiah is driving me crazy! He's not breastfeeding as much anymore, so my supply has decreased over the last couple of weeks to match his demand. He does have a cold at the moment, but this has been going on too long!
Josiah has never been a big eater. The longest I could get him to feed was 6 minutes a side, compared to Kiya who would feed for 15 minutes a side. Now, I'm lucky if he feeds for 3 minutes a side. I have to fight to get that! Yes, he is having solids, but he's having less of them too (due to loss of appetite with his cold) so he's not substituting one for the other. Josiah has gone from 4-5 breast feeds and 3 solids feeds in a day to 4-5 reduced breast feeds and 2 solids feeds (one of them reduced).
He's not settling properly at night either. Josiah was having one dream feed, then going 6 hours. Now he has 2 dream feeds most nights, or he won't resettle. Nathaniel and I think part of the problem is that he's waking up hungry, yet he simply will not eat more. I've been trying!
Its so frustrating! Vicki, our plunket nurse, comes round this afternoon so I'm going to talk to her then. I know Josiah won't starve himself, but I'm really worried he's not getting enough. I didn't look after myself with Kiya, and could only breastfeed until she was 6 months old. I've been better this time, so if I do have to switch to formula, at least it wasn't me and I've breastfed for a month longer.
Thanks for letting me vent, girls.

dont be so hard on yourself...not all babies feed for as long as 15 mins... both my boys were long feeders but i have met mums who only fed 5 mins a side and had happy kids.
if hes not well that will have an impact even after he appears to be better too.

Good luck. Speaking from experience it makes things worse if you force them to eat we went down that track and then had a major aversion to the bottle and the breast that we had to try and overcome. Hopefully when he gets over his cold he will come back to the boobie and his food. I wonder if he could be teething too? The only thing i would be concerned about if hes not getting enough we nappys. Your plunket nurse might have some good ideas. Good luck

Thanks, ladies.
The problem is, he started cutting back on how much he would drink before he got this cold, while wanting as much solids (but not more, strangly enough) as before. Then he got a cold and wanted less solids.
As far as the fight to feed goes, Josiah will take the breast, suck for a little bit then let go and complain. If I get his head back to the nipple, he will feed happily for a while longer. This happens two or three times a side. He doesn't have wind, he just doesn't seem to want to feed continuously. It happens whether there are others round or if its just the two of us.
I misread the appointment card, and I don't see the plunket nurse until next week. She's only in town on Fridays, so I can't just call her and talk to her, I have to leave a message and wait for her to get back to me up to a couple of days later.

Maybe give Plunketline a call? They are supposed to be easier to get thru to now that they are merged with Healthline, but I've never tried so I don't know.
Otherwise, I would agree with what Maria has said - lots of wet nappies means he is doing ok. Also if he is steadily gaining weight he is doing ok food wise too, so I guess your Plunket nurse will check that next week.

I just had a thought - maybe as he's having more dream feeds at night then he doesn't want to eat as much during the day?

UPDATE: Josiah is finally eating solids 3 times a day again! He wasn't having any in the mornings at all for a while, but now is eating about a tablespoon of something (baby cereal, or some crusts of toast usually). He's eating a full tin of baby custard or fruit for lunch, and he'll eat about 1/2 a tin of baby food for dinner or the equivilent of whatever we're having! Some nights he'll eat more than others, and those nights he'll sleep better.
He's still playing silly buggers when it comes to breastfeeds, but he's getting a bit better - he only pulls off once now, and he's started to feed for another minute a side!

yay thats great news. Must make you feel heaps better. Its so stressful when your babes arent eating aye. I have that with Keegs and hes such a skinny boy yet his brother will munch on anything and hes my little chubster. Even though everyone tells you kids wont starve thenselves it still does your head in when they go on an eating strike .
Just have to add this quick note: My boys have just got themselves out of the bath and I have just discovered that they have emptied their shampoo in the empty bath and been sliding round in it great fun for them but have told them they not allowed to get dirty until i can get some more baby shampoo the little toads!!!lol
