OK, so I didn't quite know where to put this, but anyways:
My DF and I are kinda battling it out at the moment as I'm wanting to get a drier for when baby gets here as it'll no doubt make life a whole heap easier... Or so I've been told by those who I've already consulted. Now, he's a sparky so is a tad apprehensive about getting one because he obviously knows how much these kinds of things cost to run... The thing is, we have a night metre for out nightstore, so if we were to get one, it could be hooked up to the night metre in order to save us a few pingas. Not only that, but I wouldn't WANT to be using it all day every day, you know what I mean? I just want one so that, should the need arise (which I'm sure it will) I have the comfort and advantage in knowing that I can just whack it in the drier ONLY when completely necessary... Not for fluffing my towels or whatever, lol. But that's besides the point. What I really want to know is how all you lovely ladies out there feel about them? As Mum's, have you found your drier to be a life saver at times? Do they REALLY make life easier when you've got kids who need changing X amount of times a day? Iv got one and i barely use it.. i havent needed it for anything of kylahs, my DF is lazy and will wash a top he wants to wear just before we go out and then chuck it in the drier.. mind you we have had awesum weather! ------------- ~ Mummy to a beautiful girl ~ |

I didn't have one when Charlotte was first born and that was in winter but I certainly could have used it. I got one this winter and wouldn't have been without it. Yes, they do cost quite a bit to run but having so many extra clothes to dry, it would have been impossible without it (either that or having loads of washing strung up throughout the house).
I haven't used it for a while tho, with summer coming and warmer weather its not really needed I guess. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I have no idea if this is less power hungry but we have a dehumidifier and if we can't dry clothes outside we pop them on a drying rack over it and they dry really quickly.

I've got one and it's definiely good to have ...just in case. We try not to use it too much especially as the weather is so good, but its handy if I'm not organised and really need somehting that is wet.

use ours a lot....and all thru winter of course... I am not hanging out all her clothing just to let it get wet for days on end!!! and i do her towels and bedding sep, andher clothing separate again....smaller loads take less time etc...

In the winter I use a clothing rack. Takes a few days to dry, but I finish them off for about 20 mins in the dryer. I used it quite a bit in the first year with all the changes of clothes (she was born in winter). ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I always use a clothing rack for clothes, just hang them out and they're dry real quick. They stay inside but if I'm hope I'll put them out in the sun so they dry quicker. I just don't like the thought of using the drier for clothes cos it doesn't seem as fresh and I don't think it's good for them (shrinking etc) and it takes a long time.
But I do use the drier for things like undies, socks and pjs... just cos I'm lazy and it takes ages to hang them out. And I'm not so fussy about them compared to clothes. I do think it's good to have a dryer just in case - especially with a baby. You don't wanna be running out of clean dry clothes or nappies or sheets, which could quite easily happen. We don't have one, I normally just put on clothes horse in front of heat pump and their dry by the morning. I have found myself on the odd occasion wishing we did have one but we seem to manage without one.

we have one and will be using it when he arrives..and it doesn't actually cost us that much.. the bills are hardly that different when we don't use it.. I say get one:) ------------- Mum to two amazing boys! |

Having lived in both wellington and CHCH, you need a drier in wellington!!! it rains 10x as much as christchurch! and often the days its not ranining aren't quite enough to get the clothes that 100% dry so you need to put them in the drier to finish them off.

Depends on where you live. I live in sunny Blenheim, so I say NOT an essential item. What I can't get dry goes on a clothes rack either on the verandah or in front of log burner overnight (have to wait till after bedtime, though) and its dry in the morning. I do have one, though, and have used it a bit over the last winter, but that has been more out of sheer laziness than anything. Dehumidifiers and heatpumps are great as well, and cheaper if you are already using them.
and, yes, I am guilty of using it to fluff my towells... ------------- The Honest Un PC Parent of 2, usually stuck in the naughty corner! :P |

Hi Serenity, I haven't read the other posts far too lazy. Me and DH are both sparkies and we have a drier but we actively try never to use it, even though we have night rate. I think they are handy especially if bubs is going to be born in winter but if you get one try not to use it...lol
Also spend the extra money to buy one that has good energy efficiency, otherwise man will you pay for it. In winter I would hang his clothes/nappies on the airer in front of the AC and would only stick in the drier when absolutely neccessary, as in he would be wearing DH underpants if I didn't use it. Remind your DF, that it won't just be a few baby clothes that you will be washing it will be your clothes, bedding etc...believe me they puke, poo and pee their way through everything. -------------

Cuppatea - is there any particular brand you would recommend then?
Obviously I'm not going to just head out and purchase the first one that tickles my fancy, and I know that a majority of whiteware appliances now come with the energy efficiency stickers on them - But a lot of the time the sales people aren't all that willing to help you out, they just want the sale. I'd like to be able to get some ideas before heading out so that I can be really specific about what I want. ------------- My wee girl is the love and light of my life!

Ours is an Ariston and it is a condenser one as we had no where to put a tube to the outside. The only brand I would steer clear of is GE (cos all their appliances are a pile of sh*te).
I would go to Harvey Norman I have always found them to be really helpful, plus they aren't tied into fisher and paykel like a lot of the electrical stores seem to be. Look for the stickers and if you like one that doesn't have a sticker look it up on the net. Might be worth having a look at the consumer mag/website to see if they have reviewed them recently. I will have a check through our old mags and see if we have one with a review in there for you. -------------

See if the sales reps in town can do the leg work for ya. They ought to have heaps of details about their products!!
We didn't get a dryer until after Briona was born. I'd say, don't get one yet. Your bub is due in summer so you'll have no problem til probably April or later. See how it goes and then buy if you want to from there. And then you'll have 'evidence' for your DH 
Are you going to use MCN? If so it's great to have the dryer for backup for the inserts if you don't have many. If you have a carport they are awesome for hanging lines under for washing on rainy days. We have that under the eve at the back of our house. The washing still gets wind through it (so always dry in a day!) but not rain yay! ------------- |
