Me and Hannah had a trip to kindy today. Its one of those jobs on my to do before baby is born list! We have 2 kindy's here - one is slightly closer for us and their sessions are M,T,T,F 8.30-2.30 and Wed 8.30-12.30. Once they start (between 2.5 and 3 yrs depending on the waiting list) they like them to come every day, I think its mainly so they have a full session and its hard to fit everyone in if we pick and choose days.

The other kindy is slightly further away and their sessions are only 2 hours (3 yr olds in the arvo, 4 yrs in the morning), and I dont think they have to go every day.

I really like the idea of the longer sessions but I'm a bit nervous about my little girl going off for 6 hours most days.   I think when she does get a place I will keep her home on Thursdays so we can go to preschool music which she loves, then she would have Wed afternoon and all day Thursday at home.

So just wondering what hours your kindy has?

how strange. i thought all kindys did afternoon sessions for the younger kids then when they turn four they do morning kindy ...

my kindy the afternoon session is T,W,T 12.45-3.15pm and the morning is 4 or 5 days (i dont know which - guess i better find out) and it is from 9-11.45 or 12 some days...

the afternoons are more free play based and the mornings are a bit more geared towards preparing for school...

Wow those are pretty full on hours for so young! Charlotte started at nursery when she was 2 1/2- 2 morning sessions a week (9-12) for the first term, we moved her up to 3 morning sessions for the next 2 terms. She is now 3 1/2 and we have to send her 5 mornings a week but again its only the 3 hours 9-12. We have the option of having her stay for lunch (until 1) or a full day (9-3) for any day we want, but we won't be doing that. I figure once they start proper school they'll be doing the the full days there for the next 13 odd years so its nice to take it easy while we can.

is it a montessori with the long hours?

i dont see a problem...esp if she will have wed arvo and thurs off...Ella does 7 30am til 5 20pm each day at daycare....

do they do a sleep in middle of it or training them to have no nap?

No Montessori here! And no sleeps at kindy, not that Hannah has day naps anyway.

I have decided to go with the shorter hours as I dont like the idea of her being away for such a long time - she might as well just go to daycare.

Most kids start kindy at 3-4 years but there are lots of daycares and preschools and play centres available for pretty much any age. Best idea is to contact your local Plunket and get a list from them as to what is available in your area - then go visit and see what you like

sarahs kindy does 4yr olds in the mornings and littilies in the arvo hers is 8.30-11.15 mon,tue and thurs and 8.30 -2.30 on wed and friday.

my mums a kindy teacher shes a full time reliever and said that if the kindy roll is big they will usually keep 2 sesions but when the roll drops and they have trouble filling sesions they change and do the 6 or 8hr sesion each day but the cons of that are that they cant put out all the cool stuff for the biger kids to use as the little ones are to little for it and vice versa.
