I've just been browsing the net trying to find an ear thermometer but have come across a few sites that say that they shouldn't be used on small babies. Does anyone know why this is? I had never heard this and can't see what the harm is. I'm guessing that they're just trying to push the new forehead thermometers perhaps???

Not sure, my gp checked Coopers temperature with an ear one. I've got one and use it on all of the kids.

I'm not sure why they would say that, both my babies had their temp checked by professionals using the ear thermometers too.
Make sure you buy a well known brand of thermometer Amber, some of the cheaper ones (often found on TradeMe) are very inaccurate and are a total waste of money.

I find ours really hard to use and get an accurate reading on and it wasn't a cheap one.
They would say not for very young babies due to ear canal size, whcih would make it harder to get a reading if you weren't exactly sure what you are doing I am guessing.

Thanks, I will still get one anyway I think. I've spotted one at a pharmacy for $95 which my SIL has used and was happy with so I might get one of those.
