Subject: Andrew’s Operation

Well finally the day came yesterday and Andrew was very excited about going into hospital . He kinda understood that he couldn't eat till after his operation but it didn't stop him complaining all morning that he was hungry and thirsty. He was telling eveyone that he saw that he was having his tonsillis and adenoids out and grommets back in his ears.

Got to the hospital at 11am and they took him into his room straight away, they were really nice and had put a fire engine blanket on his bed and he had a nice letter waiting for him for DH's cousin who works there.

I had explained to him that everytime he had something done he would get a sticker so he was pretty good about doing things for the nurses, he had lost 700 grams since September (go figure this boy puts away a heap of food - but he can't keep still so that may explain why). The nurse explained things to him and then the lady from the catering company came in and got our orders for the meals we would be there for. Now that was good food.

Finally the time came and we were about to go to thearte. i got into my kit and got Andrew into his night shirt. This is when he got nervous and didn't want me out of his sight. I went into thearte with him and had a joke with the dr that took him down to thearte as the thearte we went into was one I went into 2 years ago. Once we were there Andrew didn't want to get onto the bed so change of plan and I sat on a chair and held onto Andrew while they gassed him to sleep. Finally done and I went back to our room to find that they had left me a bottle of Lemonade and some sandwiches.

Half an hour later the dr came and got me and as I walked down the hall to the recovery room I could hear him screaming. He was in a right state. The recovery nurses got me onto the bed to try and settle him down but he was so worked up and was calling the nurse mummy  that he was very hard to reason with. He mananged to pull his IV out of his hand and covered me, the bed, the 2 nurses and the floor in blood . At that stage I was able to lay on the bed on my back and get Andrew on top of me and hold him down with my arms and his legs down with my legs. While this was happening the surgeon came in - I think he wanted to talk to me but I was far to busy so he went on and did the next patient. While I was holding him the dr put another IV in his other hand. I had the 2 nurses and someone else hold him down as well - he was one strong boy.

Finally he went back to sleep for about 20 minutes and then when he woke up he got an iceblock and we were moved back to our room. I was able to get off the bed and Andrew went back to sleep. DH and Josh came into see Andrew, who kept telling us he was sore, and then fell back asleep.

Dinner came and all Andrew wanted to eat was Jelly, so the nurses called the kitchen to get move for him, while I ate his dinner. Andrew's Opa (FIL) turned up and he read Andrew a few stories and then Andrew said he feels sick. I took him to the toilet and he said no I feel better, got back up on to his bed and he threw up everywhere . Got the nurses in and they cleaned up his bed while I got Andrew into the shower and DH turned up so I could go to band.

Got Andrew sorted and then I left. While I was away Andrew just slept and the surgeon came in and spoke to DH. When I got back Andrew needed to have pain killers so I got him up for the toilet. he didn't want to have his panadol, didn't want to have anything to drink, didn't want go toilet, just didn't want to do anything. Finally got him to do everything bribery with coke worked wonders.

Just as I was about to go to sleep Andrew's night nurse came in. She woke Andrew up during the night but didn't bother me. This morning the surgeon came in to see Andrew and put the hard word on him to drink lots to make it feel better. He had Jelly for breakfast and once he had eaten that he had his IV taken out and had a shower and we came home.

Southern Cross Hospital were great, didn't charge me to stay as they expect a parent to stay overnight with a young child. I got a bed to sleep in and every meal was my choice. Even when I came back last night at 10.30 I asked if there was a chance of getting something to eat and I got sandwiches, biscuits, jelly for Andrew to eat, some hot water and milo, coffee and a tea bag and milk.

So now the hard work is keeping Andrew still and not too active over he next 10 days so he doesn't bleed from the sites. He is telling me he can hear better now.

What a lot to go through for both of you, Andrew sounds like he was so brave - and you too! I probably would have thrown up at the blood going everywhere. Great that it's over and done with now though!

It was also really nice to turn the computer on this morning and get an email from my musical director thanking me for making the effort to get to the dress rehersal we had on Wednesday night.

He is sore today, so he had Jelly and an iceblock for breakfast , but so long as I can get food into him he can have his pain relief.
