Bay started scratching his head yesterday so i checked his hair and couldnt find anything....today he was scratching again so i checked again and OMG!!! his hair was riddled with them!!!! it took 3 hours of sifting through his hair, shaving his head, vinegar and egg then 3 baths and it looks like they are gone *touch wood* yuck yuck yuck yuck yuck!!! i know its semi normal to pick them up from daycare but still yuck!! i went through and treated DHs hair too because he also has front to back mowhawk/mullet (bussiness in the front, party in the back) but he has no sign on any at all and i did my hair (i only have an itchy head when i think about the nits!)
Bays never had nits before because hes always had a crew cut (spikes on top short everywhere else) but lately he has had a 'dadda ' mowhawk...well not anymore because we just shaved it off!!...even after all of that they just kept on popping up in his hair!!! SO ANYWAY!! iv never had to deal with nits before so im a little lost as to what to do from here - iv striped and washed his sheets and ours and sprayed the floors, couches etc with flea and lice spray......What else do i do???????? where else do they live apart from hair??? Is there any other home remedies i can use???? (our tiny supermarket doesnt have any lice shampoo in stock at the mo and the chemist is closed today!!  ...

I saw a thing on the TV where they were using hair straighteners to burn the little buggers out. Kills the adults and the eggs and you can get right to the scalp. I would give that a try. They can't live long anywhere else so I would just treat yourselves and keep an eye for a week and then you should be right. -------------

i had to laugh at the extremeness of your measures. they cant live for long off the head as they need to suck the blood to survive! if you are worried about reinfestation then you could always just spray their heads with ti tri oil and water and run a nit comb thru daily ... ------------- http://www.myfitnesspal.com/weight-loss-ticker">

you can also get a defense spray (wildchild brand i think)that you spary in everyday, especaiil play centre days etc. it will stop them from getting reinfested.
also a good easy way to get rid of them is just condition their hair and leave it in while you comb them out with a metal comb, makes them come out lots easier. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

yeah i second all that..some parents at my centre used spot on(dont do that ffaaarrrr too many chemicals and dangerous) they can live up to 24 hours on pillows and stuff so I'd just change them daily for a few days..and yeah if you can get that preventer stuff do it..I cant remember the stuff I used..(though i did use a metal comb and conditioner in the shower and that worked well) (preg brain) glad i got them before I got pregnant as you can t use much when you are pregnant..even tea tree oil apparently.. thats supposed to be good to stop them but never tried it.. (sorry i wasnt much help)
it is really really really normal to get them from preschool..at our preschool you had to notify the teachers and we had to put a sign up and make sure the child was treated and stayed away for 24 hours.. seemed to stop the spread but the problem is when parents don't tell or dont know and then they spread:( good on you for treating them asap and asking for help! ------------- Mum to two amazing boys! |

oh man they just gave me the heebyjeebys!!! (have a phobia of little creepycrawlys! lol).....
So anyway i have been checking his hair like every half hour! lol and the first few checks yealded some more little jumpers!!! so i loaded on the tea tree oil (good ol MCNs meant i had some in the cupboard! lol) and even though he hated the smell of it it seemed to do the trick!....for now!!.....im hoping that cutting all his hair off will keep them at bay now too!! |

Not entirely true.. don't ask how I know but they can survive for about 24 hours off the head, and not only that, ab out 1 hour in a chlorinated water (off the head!) ------------- ">

Its probably the start of fairly regular infestations (sp?). My DD is 11 and is only now not getting them. Unfortunately you can't do much about other kids hair and when your kid has clean hair, the nits love it. I suggest you get one of those robicombs (sp?). They are quite expensive to start of with, but its easy to comb through their hair once or twice a day and kill them as they hatch. If you keep it up regularly, if he gets them again, you should be able to kill them before they can lay eggs.
Oils of some sort, even olive oil work well as they are more gentle for the kid and easier to put a metal comb through the hair. The oil suffocates the nits but doesn't nessisarily kill the eggs. Just remember that you have to redo any treatment after about 7 days as the eggs you haven't got out will hatch and the cycle will start again. I would avoid chemist products as the nits can become resistant to the product. Good luck. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

I've heard too that tea tree oil works really well in preventing re-infestation - maybe try diluting with water and sprying that on the hair? Im sorry but this is only the beginning of what is to come...... NITS ARE THE DEVIL but every term at school without fail my girls get nits, I have tried everything anf I mean EVERYTHING on the market to kill these little bas...ards and NOTHING WORKS. Alot of the stuff these days just stunns then and after a minute or 2 the SO CALLED dead one start to come alive I kid you not. I use tea tree oil drops in the shampoo and cont and I use a natural defense spray when I do their hair and they still get them...... The best treatment I use is to full the kids hair with conditioner and use a nit comb to comb them out. IT WORKS and gets rid of the eggs too. Also it isnt as expensive as all the fancy treatment companies market and you can do as often as you like without wasting money on crap lotion, potions and spray that DO WORK..... BTW Im not embarassed to post about nits as it is just so common now days and I can proudky say that in the school holiday;s they are always clear but once at school it is just a free for all for those little creatures ------------- http://lilypie.com">

when my eldest got nits for the first time i freaked and cleaned every thing but now i relise it was a bit of an over kill, i have found that all that need to be done is to change their pillow cases and sheets and comb their hair through with a metal comb and ither baby oil or conditioner about every 3 days (their eggs take 3 days to hatch) for two weeks, and of course tell the day care of school so all parents can be told and hopefully thay will check and treat their kids. and it should be all good till next time. ------------- http://lilypie.com">

yeah i think i will drop Bay off to school in the morning (dh usually does it) and il have a chat with the teachers and tell them about his nits!
I was speaking to my sister (her boy goes to the same daycare) and she knows exactly where they are comming from and the parents have been told but they havnt treated them! (2 sisters )......but yes they will never be rid of im sure!!
