I'm hoping someone can help me...

I'm starting a new job in Feb 08 and planning on doing the whole year (teaching). It's only a one year contract so if I get preggy during the year will I get the 14 week maternity pay as long as I've been there 6 or 12 months??? (I've been told that without a job to return to then you don't get anything!)

Thanks

however, we had a wee situation similar with a girl at work, so we made her "redundant" after her PPL was up - stretched out her fixed term... She knew there was no job etc after PPl up, but that way she still got it.

There is a section in the forms about fixed term contracts and PPL. They other option for you is the $150 for about 8 weeks.

I think that you do get something - if only I could find my old copy of the contract!

You'd still be working full time hours for the 12 months wouldn't you?

If the 14 weeks falls within the contract then you get paid, if it doesn't you don't. If part of the 14 weeks fall within that time then you get however many weeks until the contract ends. There is a lump sum that you can get instead of the 14 weeks paid you might be entitled to that instead.
There is an online calculator http://www.ers.dol.govt.nz/parentalleave/calculate/ - link

Might be worth asking a question on the Department of Labour site.
It does have an area saying what cuppatea said but if you are on a contract for 12 months then you might be entitled to the paid leave (because you wouldn't get extended leave since you wouldn't be in position).
I'm having my own hassles returning from maternity leave and wish I'd found this site prior to talking to the union and my boss!
